What are some of your favourite tips to prevent blisters?

    • @JohnVianneyPatron
      @JohnVianneyPatron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Research shows that shoe fit size is very rarely the cause of blisters. And that methods of lubrication (powders, petroleum etc. may actually exacerbate problems). Best solutions are normally double layers of socks and shoe insoles. (As a light backpacker I tend to avoid carrying more than one sock for a day though😏).

I use Vaseline, foam padding around toes, lambs wool, a sock liner and then a merino sock. Works well on the Camino each year.

Fantastic tips! I'm not a hiker, but I've just started getting back into long distance walks, and it's amazing how weak my feet have become. Can't wait to build up callouses again! 🤣

Good luck building up those callouses! Hopefully you can do some hikes down in Victoria ❤

sorry if you already know this one but one chap (very experienced hiker judging from all his videos) said to puncture the blister with a fine sterile needle, draw cotton thread through and snip off both ends. This allows the blister to drain without sealing and speeds up the mending process. Probably also a good idea to pop a patch over it whilst healing. Hope this is of use.

A tip that works for me is a double walled sock. The “Wright sock” is two layers. The two layers rub on each other instead of on you.
New leather boots: fill them with warm water for a few hours. Pour out the water, wearing (1) sock liners with (2) merino wool socks over them, and wear the boots until they’re dry. Changing socks a few times expedites the drying.

Micropore tape is only a few dollars a roll but is what i use to wrap every toe. if i were to take it off, i wouldn't take the top layer of skin with the tape ;) it is something i never hike without.

Carry not to heavy helps, the underground you walk on matters. Stop and dry your feed helps. Walk barefoot a bit or backwards on the beach. Clean the socks or the shoes. I pop a blister because its more painful to have a blister. This pain makes you walk different and create an other blister. I try to dry the blister and disinfecting the blister with iodine.

I have a lot of socks and change and dry them a lot. Some people use hikers wool.

      Late reply sorry 🙉
I use sock liners first (they are thin but give you that extra layer to avoid friction)

I'm a lucky girl. Hardly ever have blisters... Maybe because I have the right shoes and socks!

Nice advise, but no popping, use a pin to lance, drain and retain the skin on the blister point, re-lance as necessary to keep it down. The dry skin over it is the best of bandages.
Un-fun fact, most shoes are not made the shape of an average foot, the shape of the sole has been morphed so the least waste of material occurs when nesting them together
as closely as possible for cutting them out. If the shoe your considering doesn't come in width sizes (number of E's) as well as length, consider a different shoe.

I have never seen or heard of any shoe that comes in different width sizes. Only different length sizes. Is this width size normal for more than 1 brand of shoes? And do you work for/own that single company? LOL XD

Sounds like your toe was bumping against the inside of the shoe. That is why you should always buy a slightly longer shoe than what your normally buy. This is especially important when going downhill, because your foot tends to slide forward a bit, thus the need to buy a longer shoe so there will be space to slide into before bumping your toe.
