Currently going through a divorce(it's amicable)...and planning on living life differently..doing the things I always planned on doing and didn't because I got married and settled down. I need to heal my soul and feed my wanderlust. So I am starting to plan for my first Camino, This video and other videos like it are going to be a huge help. Wish me luck.
I first came upon the subject from the Martin Sheen film, the Way. I am in a very spiritual place with late stage cancer. I’m feeling okay and feel this trek is a part of my future. I am in a test study program utilizing targeted immunotherapy. Thank you for posting this and may God Bless You.
Frank! Thanks a lot for sharing, and being here with us! We would love to meet on the Way with you and share stories, laughs and some wine too 😉 so heads up and keep us informed how is the therapy going, we send you lots of good vibes, energy and hugs
I enjoyed the movie, The Way. But you must be aware that much of it does not give a real picture of the Camino. Primarily, the backpacks they care are not what you need for a Camino. Unless you are planning on camping your pack should only carry a change of clothes and few pairs of underwear and maybe four pairs of wool socks. You should have warm but light weight coat and a pair of long underwear. If you hike in the Spring you will get rained on, so a good poncho and a wide brimmed hat for rain and sun is a must. Forget carrying books, you can get the info you need with your smart phone. If you are not properly prepared and caught in the rain and soaked hypothermia is a possibility. Many auberges have no heat, so if you are cold and wet, you need dry and warm clothes. Thus the need for long underwear. I speak from personal experience. When walking you should take off your shoes or boots and thoroughly check your for emerging blisters. Change into a new pair of dry socks. If you are worried about steep trails you can just hike the meseta which is mostly flat. I would not walk the trail from mid June until mid September. Why? Too damn hot and too many people. I really like early May through mid June. The fields are green and edges of the trail are lined with wildflowers and particularly the bright red poppies. My experience is that the older folks make it to Santiago and young people over tax their bodies and drop out. Slow and steady like a tortuga is the vest plan. I'm 76 and plan to do another camino. I'll slow down and do more investigating towns I walked through hurriedly on past Caminos. For your info, The Way will be re-released with parts added that were edited out. Also a sequel in is the making. Good luck. If you stick it out through the difficult times as your long used muscles begin to cry out, then after 2 weeks you'll begin the process of getting stronger and stronger everyday. When you get to Santiago your pants should be falling. Good luck and buen Camino...Ultreia!
I always took my shoes and socks off when I had a 15 min break. My feet cooled down, less swelling and it was such a relief. I did not have a single blister. Bon Caminho everyone, whichever path you take.
I'm lucky to be a blister free walker too. I blame my luck on litres and litres of water. Another of my top tips is don't carry water into town carry it out and drink it on the Camino 😂 you can never drink too much water and it makes the wine taste even better with you menu.
I did the Camino from St Jean, things to do, 1. train, get fit, I walked 10 km a day for a year before I walked 2. Buy good footwear and break it in 3. Take a warm jacket 4. Plus my ability to travel is negated by several factors,at the moment. If I ever could,I'd love to do just a short stretch maybe six miles over one day. That'd be enough for me. Hi Seo Family! Thanks a lot! Great to have you here :) Camino with family has to be a wonderful and bonding experience! Hope we could meet next year on the way ;) hugs and bien camino
I lived and backpacked Europe for seven months in '98! I always set up my bed and organized upon arriving and had everything ready to go if I had an early start in the morning! Most other travelers weren't as considerate! I even came in one night and someone was in my bunk, assuming that it had been made for him!
@@caminotellers , oops! Read Jack's book and attended a couple lectures! Now TH-cam! Timme and money to take 6-7 weeks from work! Travel time to Europe and back, visit family in London? 4-5 weeks pounding the dirt? : )
I backpacked through Europe and Israel most of 1971. I brought too much stuff and wound up ditching it along the way. My husband and I are thinking of doing the Camino next fall. We had planned to do it when Covid broke out.
Hola, in 2 weeks I’m leaving for my third Camino. I doesn’t thinking about stretching before. I will try this. Thanks 🙏🏽. Ultreia et Suseia y Buen Camino Peregrinos ♥️
I love your advices and the way you gived it to us, how much the camino teached to all of us, one of the greatest things i found in my life... god save the pilgims!!!! ❤❤❤
Yes, this august i will do my 7th try starting in sjpdp the 29 july, i hope finally this time i will arrive to Santiago in 1 hit... i have great expectations about what the camino has to teach for me this time 😋
The blister question!!! For me, pop the blister, drain the fluid and then apply a compeed or plaster. I found if you don't pop it, it is still really painful. I've never used iodine or similar, just wash the area with water, although I'm sure medically trained folks will tell me I'm wrong. Switching from boots on the first camino to trail runners on every subsequent one meant I've only had one or two blisters over 4 or 5 caminos since the original blisterthon.
The key is to pop with skin intact. I come in with a sterile (flame or alcohol does the trick) pin from outside the blister's perimiter, under the skin and into the fluid sac at a very shallow angle, and drain that way. This results in a very small break in the skin, away from the actual damaged area, and keeps that cover in place. You do not want to expose that tender dermis under the fluid.
@@chakaka801 depanding on the Camino you will do... check the video about the shoes and decide what is necessary, for me, trail runners are an interesting chocie 👌🙏
1. Don't distrub others when waking up. So prepare night before. 2. Stretch before. 3. Stretch after and get in your hostel before 10 pm or when they close. 4. Don't rip off blisters. 5. Do your own routes sometimes.
I walked the French way September 2019. Changed my life in massive ways. Anyway, I ended up having to bus a leg of the way because I had such a terribly strained calf and Achilles. I hadn’t been stretching. After physical therapist visit in Leon, stretching every day all day and i made it to Santiago no prob! Excellent advice wished I’d heeded. Also how do you get a day job on the Camino!!?? 👀
Probably the most important tip. Train train and train. Walk, be used to walk in the mountains. Carry some weight and do a test walk with the fully loaded backpack you wanna take. 99% of first Camino pilgrims over pack.
Hi, enjoyed your vid! Finally someone mentions stretching! - very nice. Does nobody know about "stag-fat" (this is a literal translation from the German word "Hirschtalg")? It's the very best thing to prevent blisters. Sounds a little weird, but its like a stick, the solidity as a lipstick. In Germany you get those in the pharmacy, it doesn't cost much. If you treat your feet beforehand with this stick, it makes the skin smooth an more elastic - most of the time you then get NO blisters! :-))
Some good tips. When hiking I often forget to stretch! And those early birds can be a pain if you're not one yourself! Good tips for sure! I'm thinking about hiking the Camino in 2023. 😁 All the best!
@@caminotellers I plan on doing the Camino Frances. But I wanted to hike it from my home in Belgium. But due to not enough time, I'll probably bike to my sister who lives in the Dordogne area in France and hike from there. This all in 3 parts, I think... Is the Frances route doable with a start at st.Jean-Pied-Port around the 7th of October? I guess later is a real problem because of snow and short days... All the best, Kaat

Thank you. I plan to walk the Camino with an acquaintance. She need to complete the last 100 Kilometers. I will go with her this year and go alone in 2024 or 2025. I have to save time off from work. I am so excited. I will walk de Camino in June 2023. I has been my life dream. I drive with the book next to me in the passenger seat 10 years now. I say one day I am going. and that day is coming. Not much money. but I will use my credit card at REI and Amazon.

Thank you for another great, fun video! I’m going to be doing the Frances route starting mid-September, and am so excited, thanks in part to your funny and helpful videos. :) But one question - what are alternative routes you mentioned on your last point? Are these still marked with the Camino signs so pilgrims don’t get lost if they take one? Thanks!
I think I’m now to old and unfit , but I wish I could find a way to feel more capable, but I’m getting out of main steam life the way we are told we are ment to live , I hope my traveling more nomad life may make me feel more like I’m living
Estelle, you have awakened an impulse, I’m going back into training, how long did it take you to walk the Camino, where did you start? Do you have a favourite stretch? One thing I forgot, warm gloves.
Yes, it may seem odd, but I crossed the mountains without gloves and my hands froze, I stopped at every village shop until I found a pair of gloves, they weigh nothing but make life so much easier. I also had clips on my pack to allow me to hang damp clothes to dry while I walked. I also had a billed cap with a “veil” (like a legionnaires Kepi) to keep sun off my neck, naturally I had good sunglasses and sun screen. I also wore a bandana (I’ve always worn one while hiking, they come in handy for so much. Expert tip, in the first part of the Camino, wear a combination of red and white, the locals really appreciate the support displayed.@@caminotellers
Hey, just a small pointer for the second stretch. When you do that stretch, please grab the ankle and not the foot. If you hold you leg on the foot it can injure you ankle in the long run, because you pull it apart. Tham for this awesome Video!!
Emma, your attention to the details is impressive, I bet you are a yoga teacher! You absolutely right. Hope that one day I can do a entire stretching course for Camino pilgrims with the help of professionals :) that would be soooo cool! Big hugs
This seems to be a very interesting place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!

Thanks Zheer! I was there on 7th ;) the snow and rain were there as well !! Next time you see me, please come by and let’s have a chat or a coffee. How Wes your Camino?
I thought you were French and it seems I was not wrong. It was not only because of your accent but because of your great Spanish pronunciation. Also, I loved your attitude and sense of humor.
Hello my friend, thank you for all the work you are putting to these videos! May I ask you a question? Are trekking poles necessary for Camino? I would like to keep my luggage as minimal as possible… Thank you in advance 🍻
Hi Dominik! Thanks a lot :) 😃 al depands of few factors... which Camino you do, how steep is the stage and... how heavy is the bag. I personally don't use them, maybe because I always forget them on every stop !! Hahah In the downhill stages I take an extra time and it works for me... and if you need them, there are plenty wooden ones in the forest ;)
@@caminotellers Thank you very much. As for the Camino I am still choosing but I will be doing something shorter, max 400 km and most likely it will be on the north coast of Spain. As for the bag, I am packing according to your guide, so I do not expect it to be too heavy, plus I am 27 year old, quite sporty guy so that should be alright. I hope. And I don't wanna pack anything that is not completely necessary. Thank you very much
I used them on the Del Norte last year, while I did feel it was kind of a pain to carry them I did like to use them to help take the strain off my legs like going up some big hills or where I had to take a big step, up or down. I bought a cheap pain and left them in the albergue in Muxia.

I loved Sarria - Santiago as I only had few days. First you notice even with lugguage trandfer. You took to much stuff on the Camino😂. After 8 days rain of 10 you dont evrn put on the Poncho anymore because it sucks and the Umbrella is best solution when its not windy😂.

I agree with you... the expresion- pilgrims perfume is well known, and maybe that's why they used botafumeiro in the cathedral of santiago- to keep the flies away :) buen Camino
Yes!!! The most important when you arrive after the walk.. It's a good practice for your feet, to not stay with all of the bacteria and have a good care.
His looks Irish with his red barba, but sounds weirdly foreign. Just did some of the camino in Cantabria y Asturias, I didn’t crave a stretch or a cerveza just a really hot curry which I found 8n Xixón
I like your visor cap ... since it doesn't have one of those beanie buttons on the top of it. I have looked all over and I cannot find any place in the US, on Amazon, or anything that sells caps with the panels and no stupid beanie button on top. Where did you find that cap ... can I buy one from America? Very nice. Also ... fantastic photography, and very nice videos ... though, you did spell "stretch" wrong at least twice. I'd love to do the Camino someday but I am getting old. :-(
Thanks a lot! I love hats, I used one that was clipped to the top but I lost it.. but now I use the Buff hat, and I m soo pleased with it. It’s a Spanish brand but they quite popular all over the world ;) hope to see you here one day, hugs
I am absolutely convinced humans are programmed or wired for solitude! I always crave for it! or is it just me? My friends think I am weird for going places on my own which I love to do!
Hi! I just finished my first Camino and I loved it! I want to challenge myself and try some other trails, plus the camino is so busy. Any suggestions? Scotland, New Zealand, or?
Maybe check other Caminos, del Northe, Primitive or Via de Plata, these aren't as busy and they are marvelous! Or getting to the other side of the hemisphere, I will do the Char Dham pilgrimage in india in july, and there are so many long walks/pilgrimages- japan, turkey, slovenia, and even israel! All on my list. The one worth to check is "88temple of shikoku" ;)
I highly recommend a pilgrimage in Brazil 🇧🇷 I did last year 320km in 12 days it was absolutely AMAZING!!! Very challenging mountain landscape, stunning views and super friendly and welcoming people. It’s called “caminho da Fé “.
I walked the West Highland Way in Scotland after the Camino. Wonderful, but it felt much harder and there are no hostels and hardly any opportunities to buy food and water.
I'd like to take on via della plata? From Granada to Compostela de Santiago, I've been walking daily for 2 years now (65 km/week) and I'm almost 60 years old. Can i do that?
There is a path from Granada, called Camino mozarabe… it’s a long way but it is really rewarding! Btw, the age doesn’t matter ;) we all young in the spirit , hugs
Hi Lee! People from south of spain- Andalusia and Canary Islands they do not pronounce "s" in the end! It's easily understandable and accepted to everyone all over Spain.
Julian, how are you? This is on the Camino Frances, after villa franca de bierzo y O’cebreiro… you can take a way on along the road, or you can climb the secondary route and enjoy amazing views. On the end of this path you will get to Pradela! Hugs
I would like to do the main route, from the French Pyrenees to Santiago, but I wouldn't even consider doing it in the summer. I would do it in April-May.
@@martywilliard Yes, and chestnuts also, but in Jun-Jul cherries are ripen. In 99 asked for some to a french old lady, and she answered: "Pour les oiseaux".
People go around with just Google translate 😊 some Spanish is always useful, but if you don't have the chance to learn it before heading there, you will manage!
Walk your own path. Everybody is different. Focus more on what you are going to do and less what you should not do. It’s just a walk, take it as it comes

So its great to see it all on your films only I don't watch them in order and I must go back and watch some from before I joined. In a way we are all Pilgrims just in living.
Jane, thanks for sharing! I can only tell you one thing- dream big because sometimes the dreams are coming true… hugs

I lived and backpacked Europe for seven months in '98! I always set up my bed and organized upon arriving and had everything ready to go if I had an early start in the morning! Most other travelers weren't as considerate! I even came in one night and someone was in my bunk, assuming that it had been made for him!

Great feedback! Thanks

Thanks for sharing Becca! Stretching is a must, and it’s only appreciated when it’s too late ;) hugs 🤗
I would add: to train enough before going!
Nice shots ❤️

Probably the most important tip. Train train and train. Walk, be used to walk in the mountains. Carry some weight and do a test walk with the fully loaded backpack you wanna take. 99% of first Camino pilgrims over pack.
@@g.t.4961 100% of the pilgrims overpack ;) including myself

Hi, enjoyed your vid! Finally someone mentions stretching! - very nice.
Does nobody know about "stag-fat" (this is a literal translation from the German word "Hirschtalg")? It's the very best thing to prevent blisters. Sounds a little weird, but its like a stick, the solidity as a lipstick. In Germany you get those in the pharmacy, it doesn't cost much. If you treat your feet beforehand with this stick, it makes the skin smooth an more elastic - most of the time you then get NO blisters! :-))
Excellent advice! Thanks a mil!
Great video! Muchas gracias ! ❤
Some good tips. When hiking I often forget to stretch! And those early birds can be a pain if you're not one yourself! Good tips for sure! I'm thinking about hiking the Camino in 2023. 😁
All the best!
Thanks! I'm the early bird too.. mostly! hahah Which camino are you walking in 2023?
@@caminotellers I plan on doing the Camino Frances. But I wanted to hike it from my home in Belgium.
But due to not enough time, I'll probably bike to my sister who lives in the Dordogne area in France and hike from there.
This all in 3 parts, I think...
Is the Frances route doable with a start at st.Jean-Pied-Port around the 7th of October?
I guess later is a real problem because of snow and short days...

Estelle, you have awakened an impulse, I’m going back into training, how long did it take you to walk the Camino, where did you start? Do you have a favourite stretch? One thing I forgot, warm gloves.
Warm gloves?
Can Isuggest that yoyu bring a sleeping bag or sheet bag as some of the albergues do not provide them and the nights can be cold.

Big hugs

Hahah
In the downhill stages I take an extra time and it works for me... and if you need them, there are plenty wooden ones in the forest ;)
Thank you very much
@@MrGeorgiko fantastic!! Enjoy it ;)
I definitely used my poles a lot. But buy them when you get there. I paid around $20 and they worked great. Expensive ones aren't necessary.
I used them on the Del Norte last year, while I did feel it was kind of a pain to carry them I did like to use them to help take the strain off my legs like going up some big hills or where I had to take a big step, up or down. I bought a cheap pain and left them in the albergue in Muxia.
I wouldn’t be able to help myself and would say hello pillgram in a John Wayne voice every time I passed someone.
