    Listen to Dixie! I never considered myself to be blister-prone until I started hiking for more than a week. That's when I started having issues with blistering. It got to be so bad and my toes looked so gnarly that at times I wondered if it might lead to amputation. Then I tried Injinji sock liners and I haven't had a single blister since! I don't even bother to take off my shoes when I have to ford a river anymore. I never would have believed these little guys would make such a difference. Now it's the #1 advice I give to people that want to get into backpacking.

    Useful info as always. Thank you. During my camp I always remove insoles from my shoes and dry them outside or in my sleeping bag while asleep, depending on weather. Since most of the feet sweat is coming from the bottom it helps to keep my shoes drier, particularly during my winter hiking.

    Hikers might learn one thing from runners. There’s a way to tie your shoes using the top lace hole that keeps your shoe from moving as much forward, thus preventing blisters and black toenails. Check it out, been doing it for years and it absolutely works.

    I've never gotten a blister with wrightsocks. One pair lasted forever, then both feet formed a hole on the same day in the same spot so I was super impressed with the quality. Got one of their thinner coolmesh versions next, those things didn’t last at all. Now I'm on my third pair that are back to being mid cushion, no complaints.
    Once my Achilles stretched out with the zero drop on my Altras, my mileage also jumped up and I don't get the full leg cramps like I used to with boots. Change into fresh socks at night and I'm ready to go in the morning.

    Thank you Dixie. very helpful reminders. Even if it's hard to remember when it's raining or the sun is blazing down on you: Your estimated camp spot is never too close to not take a break and take care of your feet, socks, and shoes (forgot than one myself several times, and it always ended badly) and you're never too tired for some after-walk care and maybe a little massage on the camp side. Once neclected just for one day, your feed (and you!) will suffer the next day. My tip: Always keep one of these tiny bottles with Japanese mint oil, Australian tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia), or similar in your pocket, and use it for a quick massage. Saved my last hike almost daily, as it cooled down any hot spot on the Achilles, soles, toes, and even my knees overnight.

    Great tips! I have plantar fasciitis, and it limits what I can do. I stop at around 3 or 4 miles because of my feet...if it weren't a problem I could go further! Thanks, Dixie. Gnarly sock montage, LOL!

    Double layered Wright Socks have always done it for me! That and drying my feet and socks every occasion possible.
    Gaiters work great for me in keeping twigs and pebbles out, but I use ones that go up almost to the calf. Short ones tend to bend and flex right at the entry point.

    Socks that many hikers don't mention are Balega socks. They are used widely by marathon runners and have a nice arch support. I've hiked in them in the Sierras for years with no issues. ❤

    For people, like me, whose feet get cold at night, you might consider getting some "Freeze Out" foot covers from your local motorcycle store. I have these in my moto-riding kit and took them just recently up into high alt in Wyoming. So much better for me than wearing socks at night because they are roomy around my foot. I find that wearing socks all the time really irritates the skin & hair on my feet and that makes it difficult for me to sleep with them on. The foot covers cinch up around the ankle and are like a small, warm bag for your feet.

    I like to bring 2 pairs of socks to hike in and unless it's raining, the off pair will be hung, turned inside out, from the back of my pack to air out and get some UV disinfection. I've found this significantly reduces odor. I'm also a big fan of the Injinji Nuwool liners. And I take off shoes and socks at least once in the middle of the day and usually wash my feet then too unless I'm really trying to conserve water between sources.

    This is a super important topic IMO. The feet are impossible to really rest or keep clean on trail and taking care of a problem immediately can save you so much pain (literary) in the long run. The solution is somewhat different from person to person (to me waterproof shoes was a benefit most of the time) so it's important to find what works best for you. Taking care of hot spots before they develop to blisters is IMO the one most important thing to do regardless exactly how you fix it. To me 2 inch wide Leukoplast/Leukotape was the solution to any blister problems.

    Love the thumbnail! HA HA HA! Sock liners are great to have for preventing blisters. I had a hike recently when I was feeling a hot spot, then stopped. I took off my boots, let my feet air out a bit to dry them out a little, readjusted the socks because of a crease, and everything went well from there. I used baby wipes for clean, which worked great.

    Hey Dixie! My experience is that Polysporin is better then Neosporin, basically because Neo tries to make the wound heal on the outside sealing in the gunk, while Poly with protect from germs without sealing them in and letting the wound heal from the inside out, where as Neo will try to quickly seal the outside and traps germs in.

    We winter in Arizona, where we day - hike most days. I bought two pairs of hiking boots, (boots and low-cut hiking shoes), and alternate them daily. So whatever points of friction created by one pair is relieved the next day by wearing the other type of shoe.

    I use silk sock liners. Amazing. Gotta clean your feet daily when you get to camp and use camp shoes. Use gold bond powder also.

    Great video. I would also add one thing which is keeping your toenails trimmed. They can get bruised going downhill if your toe box is too small and your big toenail is too long. Toenails can also rub into next toes.

      Also don't trim them too short. I found that if a toenail is trimmed too short it digs into itself which is terribly painful.

    I am very prone to having blisters, even only with my daily dog-walks and the ocassional dayhike. I tried so many things! I plan to hike for several days/weeks in the future, and my biggest fear are the blisters :D so after watching this video and reading some comments (thank you very much), i bought a pair of the mentioned sockliners. Looking forward to try them out!

      I was first introduced to the Knees Over Toes guy on trail here in WA. I had a knee brace on and was taking a break, and three teen boys wouldn’t let me continue until I watched one of his videos with them and promised to try it😂 Still one of my favorite trail memories!

    Engo blister pads. They’re Teflon pads that go on the inside of the shoe. I put them on my Spenco insoles. They’re magic. I’ve also used Wrightsocks forever. I rarely get blisters anymore.

    Nice tips. I love my Dirty Girl Gaiters. I use them at the beach while fishing too. I wrap leukotape on one of my trekking poles for easy access.

    I swear by gaters! I’m one of those people that manage to collect all “garbage” in my shoes even in the city. Gaters really help me a lot

    Great tips as always.
    A couple of additions: Moleskin is good-leukotape and Tincture of Benzoin is much better than antibiotic ointment and a bandage.
    ToB is a sticky antiseptic that make leukotape adhere much better, keeps it from shifting, and provides an environment that kills bacteria. I carry a tiny plastic dropper bottle in my FAK. Weighs a few grams and it the BEST treatment for blisters and hotspots.🦶
    Footwear: I know you don’t like hiking boots 🥾Dixie, but all boots are not created equal.
    I have light duty hiking boots and my go-to for most alpine/Sierra back country trips: ➡️ an OLD pair of Vasque Gretchen II boots from the early 80’s (bought new) that I have had resoled once-they have about 5K miles on them and are a great as when I first broke them in. They weigh about five pounds soooo not for the faint of heart. I love them.❤️🌿

    When I started hiking in the 1970’s I wore two pair of socks. I had hiking boots purchased wearing two pair of socks. Like you I sleep with some boot socks on and those socks are for sleeping only and get put on after washing my feet after taking off my hiking boots. I am a Type 1 Diabetic since age 6(1963) so I am very cautious with my feet.

    Woah, I've never seen them sponsored but for the first time in a hiking video I saw my all time favorite shoe. Terraventure 2 Topo. They are partially discontinued but I have loved them so much that as soon as I can I am going to buy a lifetime supply of them. They just really are that dang amazing. Well at least for me. I have 4 old pairs lying around for when I'm in a bind shoe wise/ money wise and they always get me to my next step in life. Seriously no pun intended. Topo, FFS bring them back!!!

    Almost every video that mentions blisters the word friction is used, which is correct but not complete. A blister can also be formed or aggravated by pressure. NOLS instruction was to make a 'donut' out of anything you put on a hot-spot/blister to relieve the pressure in that spot. A thick molefoam with a hole in it works wonders. The pressure is spread out over a larger area and not on top of the wound (a blister is a wound). The one exception to that could be a gel covering like Spenco Second Skin.

    Hi Dixie. I had been waiting for you to revisit this issue: can you share what methods have you seen or heard of to help prevent toenail issues on trails with significant downhill sections? (like say, maybe laying some leukoplast around your big toe toenails, etc. I have already taken the step of getting a larger size shoe, and I _always_ carry with me pawpaw ointment, which honestly is some magic s...t)

    Stretching is so important, but it’s also important to ease into stretching. Doing those standing lunge-like stretches can actually cause muscle/tendon tears or even snapping an Achilles. 🍻

      this!! I had a bout of achilles tendinitis and when I was recovering, even 4 months out from the start of the tendinitis I had to be careful with those lunging stretches, I could do about 4 reps twice a day after about 3 months of PT. If you've really got weak ankles I'd honestly recommend seeing if you can find some guides to PT exercises for it like heel raises, toe scrunching, etc to start with and work up. I've been trying to get back to doing them myself

      That's not correct. A stretch does not cause a muscle or tendon to tear. All of the loading of the muscles, overloading and sometimes loading a fatigued muscle can result in a strain or tear. As can a dynamic movement, like taking off to sprint. If a strain is felt during a stretch, it's what came before the stretch rather than the stretch that is responsible for the injury. Like the straw that broke the camel's back 😊

    Yesss... And once again my TIP it's to wear polyester football tall, tough socks, over those wool expensive pair. Polyester socks prevents many things like friction between the shoe and the feet, filters the dirt, can be used as gaiters if you fold them down from the top over the shoe, warmth feet at night while sleeping, can me used as a sponge to take a bath, dryes faster than cotton or wool... etc...

    Awesome tips! I rub my feet in a little bit of coconut oil before putting on the sock liner and after the hike my feet are super soft afterwards. Haven't had a blister in years.

    Hi Dixie in the mountains if i find a nice cold moutain stream i tend to put my bare feet in it for about half an hour its incredible and takes away all pain best not to drink the water downstream from me ( yeach! ) i always tak 3 pairs of wool type socks and 3 pairs of cotton i wear cotton on the inside of the wool and wash and change every day one pair in my pack one out drying and one on my feet i only wear mandl boots a bit heavy but i swear by them...

    These are great tips, I learned a lot from reading Fixing Your Feet by John Vonhof. It is a hikers bible! I highly recommend for those who want to learn the why behind preventive measures.

    Thank you for the information! I have been getting hikers/Canyon toe on my 2nd toes when hiking long distance. Do you have any advice for that? I have purchased 2 different pairs of hiking shoes this year alone, so it could be me. Thank you for your help and keep on hiking!

    Good tips!
    One more: trim your toenails before a hike. If they're a little too long they can push against the toe of your shoes when going downhill, causing them to blacken and then fall off. Ouch!

    I found wool and some synthetic socks cause irritation almost like an allergic reaction. I wear cotton socks most of the time in day to day life. I found bamboo socks and they seem to be a good choice. They are soft and comfortable like cotton but do wick and dry pretty good. Not very easy to find but are out there. Very good video lots of great advice and techniques.

      I like bamboo as well, however, one tip I will share is that when bamboo socks go south, they go south FAST! A small snag or hole one day, 2 days later, gonzo, unsalvageable ( is that a word?) even with skillful patient needle work and rinsing. I like them a lot, but don't get attached, they are not here for a long time, but they are here for a good time!

      Try merino wool instead, more expensive but it will not cause irritation and it has better wicking abilities then regular wool.

    I suffer from Gout. I spent the last 4 years trying to perfect being able to do long expedition backpacking trips while suffering from gout.. I would actually like to talk to you about the discovery that I've made.. Has a lot to do with diet stretching and adhering to your doctor's advice.. People who suffer from extreme gout is Extremely difficult, and it actually took me the whole four years to figure out how to walk the trail again.

    I can't remember who gave me this one, but I carry a large zipper lock freezer bag with foot powder in it and every night I dunk my feet in the powder to treat them before I put my sleep socks on. Also, I have Duct Tape to cover any hot spots or blisters and to make sure Moleskin stays in place.

    As I understand it, there are two main muscles at the back of the calf. That’s why you notice a difference when you do a straight leg and a bent knee calf stretch against a tree as each stretch targets a different muscle.

    Worst trip I ever had I stone bruised my right foot on the second day. That caused me to limp, which caused another bruise on my left foot. I was planning two weeks. I spent the rest of the trip limping back to the trailhead. Now I always wear boots with shanks.

    Nicely done Dixie. Originally the liner socks we used were made of silk. Still using diaper pins to hang washed socks on my pack for drying, wearing one pair, drying the other, switching daily. Recently finished week long trip on Selway River (Idaho) in very hot weather. Had new pair of light GTX boots (hard to find without GTX). During hot part of day the heat from the trail gave me a hot foot. Though I was blistering and removed boot only to find that is was just my feet getting very hot. Happened every day if I hiked much past noon.

    Adding my 2 cents. Lower your pack weight. I am by no means U.L, but Im a lil lady with a big ole bag. End my LASH in HF because of a stress fracture in my foot. Can't say that my pack weight caused the fracture, but the last 200 miles would've been way more comfortable 😢

    Yes, get your feet professionally measured at a good outfitter. Buy shoes q full size larger, use merino wool socks. Your feet is your most important piece of gear for the trail.
    All you your advice is always informative.

    Go barefoot with barefoot shoes. Strengthen your feet with going barefoot in your backyard on varied terrain. Feet adapt. Also, barefoot shoes have wide toe box, let your toes splay, move with the environment which strengthens & stretches feet. I had plantar fasciitis. I switch to barefoot and it was a year of "therapy" as my feet stretched out and strengthened. Now I don't wear socks, even on 50 mile or more hikes. I wear textured Naboso insoles and I haven't had blisters since switching! I wear light weight trail runners, started with Xero which were great but now Be Lenka. A lot of the problems associated with the feet are the result of confining them in stiff, supportive shoes which increases sweat and limits movement. Take it slow and do some research. Consider it a long term rehab and that sensation in the feet is normal.
