Durston X-Mid Tent Setup | A Few Simple Hacks For The Perfect Pitch
I will show you a few simple tips on how to set up your Dan Durston X-Mid tent to get the perfect pitch every time. A few simple adjustments on the inside and outside of the tent will make the Durston tent more comfortable and you can adjust it to your liking. We talk about how to create more headroom, how to get the outer tent tight, how to get rid of the gap etc.
As one of the BEST and AFFORDABLE lightweight hiking tents, the Durston X-Mid can be quite challenging to set up perfectly at first. But after using it for over 1500 trail kilometres, I have learned a lot about how to pitch this tent perfectly for a good night's sleep, even in windy and extreme weather conditions.
Whether you are wild camping or are setting up your Durston X-Mid tent on a campsite, these tips will help you feel comfortable inside your tent even in the wildest weather conditions.
*UPDATE:* Since publishing this video I have been in some wild weather over the last year. With winds of over 100 km an hour, horrible mountain conditions and some very wet weather, I am honestly still very impressed with this tent. #durston #hikinggear #backpackinggear

It looks amazing !
Sure is an amazing hike! Are you planning on doing it?
@@DorisHikingAdventures hopefully one day . I need to be more fit lol
It being a trekking pole tent doesn't make it a con. You know beforehand that it needs trekking poles. That's like me buying a regular tent and saying that a con is that it won't work with trekking poles.
Love following your journey ❤
Thank you ❤
Love following you
Thank you - more adventures coming soon
Thanks for that video my brother built 2 of the huts ,,the perry and the j mckay
That's awesome
Can you just pour boiled water into the bag of continental pasta to cook it … like the back country meal?
You probably could but I like to boil it a bit longer in the pot so it cooks faster 😊
Ah ok. Cool. Thanks for your reply. I’m looking for no pot clean/low gas usage options .. I got really excited when I saw this 😊
Great review am taking mine on SWCP very soon and hope it stands up 👍
Great Video, thank you. Busy planning my cape to cape walk for my 60th birthday and getting a bit of a reality check from all of these videos!! 🙄
Enjoy your birthday hiking adventure 😊
Thanks for these 4 videos- they've been very interesting and a great help for tuning me into this walk.
So glad it was helpful! Enjoy your walk 😊
Why r u shooting this in your apartment. Totally ridiculous.
Also lots of add ons for noodles or mashed potatoes try freeze dried peas, dried mushrooms, plant based dried ‘meats’, jerky, dried seaweed, a few to simply add to the noodles and bulk it up simply, all available at Coles supermarket. Great video thank you, planning for overland track.
Thanks for the extra tips 😊
I'd low to know how you stand behind yourself :) - Great video thanks for your efforts!

Good tips. I wonder how one goes about identifying snakes. It seems quite a specialized area. I lived in Africa for two years and there were snakes of all sorts in many parts. My approach, being young back then, was to remember that I'm immortal and I just went places that smarter people would not have. Now I"m older, and it seems obvious that counting on luck is a poor approach. ;)
I think it's about researching the types of venomous snakes in the area before you go. Australia is full of snakes and to this day I am still no expert haha, but i know how to identify the deadly ones 😂 And i was terrified of snakes at first, but now i know they will leave you alone if you don't corner them 😊😊
I normally like tents with a separable inner and outer, but I bought my Durston a few weeks ago, and this time I went for the single wall Durston X-Mid Pro1. I did that for the stronger contrast to my normal Hilleberg tents and for the extra space that the one person Dyneema version offers versus the one person double wall version. Just like you, I find the pitch quite easy to do if one does not seek perfection, and has flat ground, but quite the challenges if one does want perfection or encounters high and low spots on the corner surfaces. But I've only had it up about four times, so hopefully it will get easier as time goes by. The details and the quality of the Durston gear is outstanding and while I don't really care about ultra-light, I'm not complaining about the one pound (454 gram) weight neither. I'm glad to have found your review. There is bth a "skinny pitch" option for the Durston, for when the space is tight. Lastly, for those who don't want to carry trekking poles, it should be mentioned that Durston sells their ingeniously designed Z-Flick adjustable carbon fibre supports for a reasonable price, and they weight in at 93 grams and pack down to 31 cm. I love m'.
I am curious, I have seen another video where people set up their tent inside the shelter/hut. Is that common practice?
Yes, but only the inner tent. They make good mosquito nets, and there are a lot of those. Any flying stinging thing for that matter.
Doris is an interesting person. Nice to see one of her posts. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
Thank you ao much - I am planning a comeback on the channel very soon
Carry not to heavy helps, the underground you walk on matters. Stop and dry your feed helps. Walk barefoot a bit or backwards on the beach. Clean the socks or the shoes. I pop a blister because its more painful to have a blister. This pain makes you walk different and create an other blister. I try to dry the blister and disinfecting the blister with iodine.
I have a lot of socks and change and dry them a lot. Some people use hikers wool.
Organized your backpack. Wash before go to bed. Have a good light with you. Try to avoid wet or dry it. Save resources. Friction cream and Iodine
Most Important is check the weather and plan the track with food, water and it meight be more tougher than expected to your fitness level
This track looks so good😊
It's one of my favourite sections on the Bibbulmun Track 😁
Wow looks amazing 😮
Yes I agree with that. I had the same on the AAWT. But nearly noone walking it. This looks like more people walk this track.
Just did a section this winter...its becoming more popular now
Oh the huts are more like a shelter could happen you share with snakes, insects or the nice Emu bird over their😅
The forest is beautiful their. And it's more real hiking their. Pine Valley is recommended!
Finally ive found a review of this tent of someone whos actuslly used it. Everyone else just buys it and sets it up in their yard lol
Thank you 🙏. Still my favourite tent after 1500 km 😄😄
🙃 Promo_SM
Dori - looks a great trip … but one big mistake … you should have done the side trip to Pine Valley … Walks in thru some stunning temperate rainforest (best section on the overhand track), beautiful camp sites amongst flowing creeks … the fabulous Cephissus falls , a great hut location … and the possibility of a day walk up the Acropolis for some of the best views on the track … next time you’re near lake StClair you need to catch the boat to Narcissus and walk into pine valley … so 2-3 days (if u do the Labyrinth as well)
True! Next time I would definitely take an extra 2 days to go there 😊
Dori! Thanks for the tip about GPX Viewer. I normally use Google Earth offline but it's stopped working. GPX is free, takes a GPX or KMZ file, and works offline. What is there not to like 👌Rights!
Also check out FarOut app. I use it all the time now. You have to pay, but it is honestly worth it. Very accurate with distances etc
Hoping to do this over Christmas, just waiting for July for the permits to become available 🤞🤞🤞
Yay! I hope you manage to book it 😁😁
Who wants to do this hike??
Best track in Tassie
Woop woop! 😁😁
Hey Dori, great vids! Im planning for this trip soon and would like to know if there are water tanks at each camp and how many litres did you take each day? Cheers😂
@@DorisHikingAdventures awesome, 2L was what i was allowing for too. Cheers heaps 🤙
@@DorisHikingAdventures one other question.... What are the advantages to walking N>S over S>N? and is it the more preferred direction for thru hikers? Cheers again 👍
Omg I am so sorry! I gave you the wrong info. For some reason I thought you commented on the overland track. 🙈 Here is correct info: There is a watertank at every campsite. I usually carried 3 liters on the C2C and made sure I had about 0.5 liter left at the end of the day just in case. If tanks are getting low, people usually report this in the FB groups so have a look before you go 😊 I also filled up all my bottles in the towns (usually you can find a tap near the toilets) It doesn't really matter which direction, but I prefer N-S. They say the wind is usually behind you then, but it will be tough either way 😊
@@DorisHikingAdventures no worries at all, thanks for the update 👍👍
Glad to see you enjoyed your trip! I was one of the people on track with a friend and last saw you leaving KiaOra on a big day. 👌
Haha nice! I remember you!! That was a looong day and I arrived at an overfull hut 🤯 Next time I will definitely stay at Kia Ora. Did you do any more hiking after finishing the OT?
Hi I was just wondering what time of the year you did it in. Cheers
Hi! I did the Old Ghost Road in March 😊
Thanks so much for the video. It brings back happy times I had with my daughter last year hiking from kalamunda to canning.
Hige hike great video 211 kms thats huge....awesome littoe huts sorta remind me of like ooen bbq area day huts not like the ones we have down here ....great video keep on hiking 👍🍻
Huts in Tassie are definitely next level 😄
Wait...did i see a swag at gringer creek 125kms plus in wtf was that doing there lol 🤣😂 damn heavy things they are lol
Haha yes, there was a guy who carried it all the way down the Bibb 😳😳
Not gonna lie I thought those wombats were brown bear cubs 😂😂😂
Hahaha not quite 😂😁

Welcome to Tasmania 👍
Woop woop! 😄 Such an epic place to visit!
Well she’s back with a bang! You don’t get much better than Taasie, unless your from WA like Perth right 😆
Hahaha true! Tassie was very very different - so many lessons learned 😳
Nice to hear from you again 👍 it's been a while.👌
Been a while indeed - so happy to be back 😊😊
Looking forward to the video planning doing the overland track next year
That's amazing! Did you manage to get a booking? 😊 Planning to do quite a few videos on this 😄
@@DorisHikingAdventures I'm going to do it with cradle mountain hikes they have private huts as it's going to be a nice hoilday
Wow that sounds really nice!
The perfect thing you brought up here is the two socks. Blisters are caused but the sock gripping the shoe and the foot moving in the sock, the sock causes it rubbing on the skin. There are blister prevention pads that you stick to the shoe and lets the sock "micro" slip in the shoe and the foot and sock moves as one. They are very slippery and when the blue color wears off its time to change them. Engo is one brand. The liner sock does the same. It clings to the foot and doesn't let the outer sock rub on the skin when it grips in the shoe, you have sock on sock rub instead of sock on skin rub.
Good video - we just found this trail last weekend, just come back from our second walk round it today. Have you found Horse Swamp yet?
Have not been there yet 😊
@@DorisHikingAdventures it's worth a look. Very scenic. Go in Winter when there's more water (and less snakes)
