I bought a Manix 2 in S110V this summer and just received a Sage 1 in Maxamet today. Both are incredible knives. Thank you for all of your great videos.
I love the manix 2 lightweight. Every configuration is amazing. So light for a full sized knife. I go running with my manix 2 lightweight in S110V all the time.
The Maxamet PM2 was my first Spyderco which I bought late last year, since then the collection has grown a bit. They have some excellent designs & high end steel offerings that nobody else is really doing. Interesting choices for a top 5 list, the Tai Chung Spyderco models do have a great reputation. Thanks for all your informative & entertaining videos Slicey. ✌
1. Spydiechef - my most recent spydie and the one I delayed buying as I wasn’t in love with the looks. In hand it’s tight, smooth, great ergos and at half the price of a sebbie - it’s a steal. It’s the one knife above all others I’d recommend to a non knife bro who wanted one decent knife. 2. Gayle Bradley 2 - I love this knife it’s a slicing beast and it’s a big boy. The weaker detent does not bother me as well as the lack of access to the liner lock. 3. Smock - what more to say; cool, unusual with versatile opening options and the button lock. 4. Paramilitary 3 LW - light, easy to carry and makes more sense than the G10 version (for me). 5. Native 5 - pure simple back lock. No frills and epitomises a pocket knife. To buy - Canis, Kapara, Manix 2
I use Flitz ceramic sealant (never tried EDCI). You should give it a try. I think it's a bit more expensive than EDCI but it also totally rustproofs knives by coating the blade with a ceramic shell. The shell is slick, improving slicyness and it resists grease and grime making the blade easier to clean.
Interesting video. I have the Kapara, Sage 5 lw and the Manix 2 lw in bd1n translucent blue. I would put them in the same order you did. The only other Spyderco I have is a gen 1 Delica that I bought way back in 1990.
I think most of us agree that Spyderco knives just don't fit the look we grew up with as a "pocket knife". They are weird looking! But once you have one in hand, and use the full flat grind blades, you realize what great tools they really are. Love me my Manix 2 and Sage 5 LW....and trying to figure out what smaller version Spyderco I want, Lil' Native or Chaparral?
@@greekveteran2715 kapara cuts better than the manix but both are great. All spydies cut well for the most part and it depends on your needs but my favs are sage, chaparral, native. You really can't go wrong with any spyderco. I'd say get what looks the best to your eye
Spydiechef is my next buy. Or a Smock. Which ever I run up on first. My list currently top down: Shaman PM2 Kapara Autonomy 2 Pacific Salt...great fishing knife Honorable mention: Spydiechef (when I get it it will move up the list) Bob Lum tango fixed blade
I thinky top 5 would be 1. Sage 2 the ti frame lock version 2. mantra 1 the one like the delica 3. Spydiechef 4. Manix/ domino it's kinda like a flipper manix 5. Meerkat because it's so different
My fav on your list is the Kapara. I bought both versions but have to say , like you there is only a slight difference in the two. Thanks for the review. Really like them all. Also, I find it so curious that they canceled the Bouie (spelling).
There are too many great Spydercos for me to pick just 5. I just wish they would put out more Paysans and Bowies so I could add those to my collection.
Totally agree on the Manix 2 being better than PM2, I also wish it wasn't pinned though. The GB2 is so good, to me it's like a budget CRK with better steel and liner lock. The Chaparral is awesome, but they definitely need a thicker lock bar
In no order Shaman ( REX45 ) Gayle Badley 2 ( M4 ) Spydiechef ( LC200N ) Sage-1 ( Maxamet ) Slyz Bowie ( XHP ) 3 top honorable mentions Kapara ( S30V ) Manix 2 ( Cru-Wear ) Smock ( 20CV ) The Kapara would knock off the Shaman if they would do a run with a high end steel, maybe in the ultra interesting almost mysterious Bohler M398 or Vanax 37.
Good list. It's not easy ranking Spydercos. It would be nice if the Sage was U.S. made, just 'cause. Wouldn't be surprised if we see the Bowie come back in to production at some point.
Slysz Bowie is worth $500 EZ, eBay is pushing prices around 1k. It is the one knife in my collection I'd never sell but would buy again in an instant. And my collection is loaded with grail worthy knives.
All big knives for bigger hands. I have small to medium hands and I really like FRN handles. My 5; delica 4, native 5, chaparral, lil native, and dragonfly
Tough list to argue. Too many good Spyderco’s that the list could have gone a lot of ways. Notably the Smock and Native 5 could have easily made the list/honorable mentions, but which folders would they have knocked out? Not an easy call. Again, hard list to argue.
Edci was shown in testing to do pretty poorly in corrosion prevention. Ive tried out quite a few products and now stick with mineral oil for food safe knives and eezox for my non stainless blades. Give it a try!
For someone who previously never owned a Spyderco, mostly due to the looks, which one would you purchase first? The look is growing on me, or at least I don't hate it anymore. Assume a $150 or less budget.
Im in the same boat... thinking either manix 2, sage 5 lw, or one of the g10 paras. If the g10 para3 was like $125 i wouldve bought it but imo its current price isn't worth how much knife you get when you can get a pm2 for an extra 7 bucks
Why isn't the community asking for a Native with a compression lock? Everyone likes the Lil Native but most of us think it's just too small? Wouldn't be the Native 5 with a compression lock a best seller? For me, it would be my favourite SPYDERCO. And... It would complete a full family with the Shaman and the Lil Native
@@HighCRI And isn't the Lil Native Lock-back too similar to the Chaparral as well? If they think the Native 5 is too similar to the Sage 5, they have a huge problem, cause if that's the case, all Spydercos resemble too much, I am afraid. Lol... No, seriously: I would buy a Native 5 with a compression lock hands down, but I will never own a Sage 5. I won't buy a N5 Lock-back either. Make other variants as well perhaps, but these should be all over their product range.
I don't know about other people's preferences but I'd prefer CPM S30V over CPM S35VN! Not that I don't like s35vn. It's just getting old especially since about every company is using it (A LOT)!
Great list, but admittedly I don’t understand the Spidey chef. How is that blade shape good for anything except chopping carrots? I want to understand the appeal, I really do.
I have the sage 5 light weight I don’t like it I’m going to give it away it’s too big for my hands I do like spyderco compression lock I wish they did that in every knife. I always thought sv30 was a good steel. Anyway learned something new so thanks
Maybe you never sliced your finger open on your spydichef. My apple cutting edc goes in my back pocket so the spydichef ended up there one day. I went to scratch my back and my finger slipped past it and zipped me open. I haven’t carried it since. No problem if you right pocket carry it.
I wish someone would give me a sliesh bowie or however it's spelt. That's insane. Only thing I don't like about them is most lock up nearly 100 percent
I'm new to the knife world and was wondering if anyone else thinks the Spiderco logo looks more like a tick. I do apologize if this observation of mine upsets any Spiderco fans.
@@SliceyDicey I can understand not liking the smock. It is odd looking in spyderco's typical way maybe even more so than usual. For me it's so darn fidgety and fun and the slimness of the blade helps a lot with some everyday tasks. I like Kevin smocks design, it's nice to see something different. The shaman has gotten really too expensive, especially after January. I was supposed to be given one for Christmas it was ordered and I still don't have it, knifecenter hasn't gotten a new batch.
