    Re: the sharpening choil, Sal G. has explained their stance:
    1. It can snag in certain situations
    2. It's easy enough for the user to add themself using a file or dremel tool if they really want it
    3. Most importantly, it serves no actual function. If you want to sharpen to the very beginning of the blade against the finger choil, you can do so. If that's too tedious for you, you can leave that beginning portion unsharpened and it will be functionally the same as a sharpening choil (small section of blade by the finger choil that doesn't cut).

      @coralinealgae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I went with option 2. It was easy to do. Was very careful and took it slow. Took less than 30 minutes with tiny diamond files.

    • @KaiMastaK
      @KaiMastaK 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In my view, there is only one reason for a sharpening choil, aesthetics. With a choil, it's hard to tell have much steel has been removed via sharpening. On a Spyderco's it's very obvious how much steel has been sharpened away.

    • @norwd
      @norwd หลายเดือนก่อน

      Saying that a sharpening choil has no function is the biggest tell that you’ve never free-hand sharpened. Nothing against using a clamping system or sending your knives off to get professionally sharpened, but blanket statements like that are just untrue.

    The "spyderco sage" badge on the handle is where the pocket clip touches the handle. It's probably there to reduce the friction when you want to pull it out from your pocket.

    That Sage badge on the scales is where the pocket clip lands. I would bet that is to keep the clip from tearing up your pocket and it’s on both sides for the reversible clip. Not the most visually appealing, but at least they addressed it. Just something I noticed while I was watching. Love your reviews! I have watched my collection grow with quality knives thanks to you!

    Agreed, Sage 5 LW and my benchmade m4 bailout are my top two EDC knives. I believe the LW has the new pivot bushing, but the stupid laminate sage 5 does not. I wish they sold one with at least s35vn steel and g10 scales. Also as was pointed out, the spyder logo is the contact point for the wire clip so it isn't too rough for the pocket.

    I just got the peel ply carbon fiber sage 5 and will be acid etching/ stone washing the blade, adding blue titanium hardware and a blue titanium lynch clip to it. Fit, finish, and action/centering were all flawless out of the box.

    I bought my first Spyderco today at a local store and it is the Sage 5 carbon fiber and mannnn… it is perfect! It is so comfortable and I am loving the compression lock. I’ve got a bunch of other popular brands like benchmade, Mkm, hogue, kershaw, Kizer, etc but for some reason in my knife collecting addiction I’ve waited years to buy a Spyderco! This is going to get expensive

    I used to cut a lot of fabric where I work and the sharpening choil caught all the time which was super annoying and the liner lock knife I was using closed on my hand when my thumb caught on the lock bar; that's when I bought my Sage 5. It was a great upgrade and the price was low enough to use it at work without reserve. (The knife I was using was the Leatherman Crater and I was cutting upward through a giant sheet of breather cloth and a sheet of peel ply, both with cured resin on them so I could run a strap through to remove it all)

    I know this might be considered a boring, middle of the road spyderco in certain circles but good god, man. It’s a reeeeaaallly good middle of the road spyderco. Mine is utterly flawless. The action is perfect, it feels substantial but lightweight, the locking mechanism is smooth and the ergonomics are dead on. It easily outclasses my para 3 lw in just about every category.

      I just purchased a Sage 5, the one with the compression lock. I’m not wild about the FRN, so, as is my habit, I installed better scales. Parsons fluted titanium scales! They are beautiful, and much better than FRN. I’m a big Para 3 fan, so I thought I might like the Sage. I haven’t received them yet, but I’m pretty sure I’ll like it!

    My Sage 5 LW is everything I wanted in a Spyderco and the only one I own. I didn't want to dip my toes into Spyderco and try a Tenacious or one of the other budget options. I wanted to get the best Spyderco I could afford and the Sage 5 LW was that knife hands down. This is all coming from a left-handed user. I find the compression lock easier to manipulate than any other lock style short of an Axis lock. I just let the knife rest on my fingertips and use my thumb to work the lock.

    • @ellusionistninja
      @ellusionistninja 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yo, as a left handed user I’ve found that the absolute best way to close the compression lock is as follows:
      While it’s open, in your left hand, and in a normal grip, you’re gunna switch your grip up and move your index finger to the same side as the compression lock and still pinch the lock with your thumb to close it.
      The grip should be pinky, ring finger, and middle finger on the side that doesn’t have the lock, and your index and thumb on the side that does have the lock.
      When you pinch the compression lock, this grip is way more stable for us left handed people and we don’t have to worry about accidentally dropping the knife.
      Hopefully that makes sense

    Good Video!
    Albeit extremely subjective, & to each their own.. Imo, YES! yes indeed better than the Para3.
    Remember that ®Spyderco was developed, and built upon the "classic" leaf-shaped blade! For this reason I'm a bigtime Native, Manix, & Chaparral lover as well!
    The Native & the Sage are literally "staples" in the ®Spyderco lineup/brand.
    I also truely believe that there is no better "all around" edc/performance blade shape. The "Caly3" | "Caly3.5" were the same type of way, in that they were VERY similar, and viewed as the "higher end" variant of the Sage.
    Indeed, the Sage's design is the epitome of perfect. In any case.. this was a great video, and really nailed everything I would/could have said!
    Stay safe & Take care✌

    I think the sage 5 is the best edc knife ever made! Lost mine, went to buy another, and Spyderco was out! So he showed me the FRN ( which I'm not a fan of) , but the action was so good! Taiwan apparently polishes the washers on this knife. So yeah, I'm gonna buy the regular sage 5 again, but i bought this LW version for hiking and camping in case I lose it again! Lol ! It is better than the para 3

    I love my Sage 5 lw and I like the wire clip that is on it and my Manix 2 lw, however when I am wearing my waist length coat I have found that coat tends to pull the knife out of my pocket. This has happened twice with the Manix and just this morning with the Sage. I am going to start putting these two knives in my pocket instead of clipped when I go out with a waist length coat.

    I couldn’t agree more about the sage 5, I absolutely love it. I prefer the frn over g10, and I definitely prefer the compression lock over the liner lock. Once I bought this knife, my para 3 hasn’t seen the light of day. The para 3 has so many after market options, I wish it was the same for the sage 5.

  • @wagstaff6135

    I love this blade shape, too. For carry purposes -- and sometimes I'll carry in a pocket "caddy" / (organizer), it's better than the hump on the para3. I also prefer its look very slightly, though I've seen more than one reviewer talk about it as overly "plain" (or vanilla or some such).

    • @BuffaloNickel9
      @BuffaloNickel9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Come on now, I guess you can say that for every knife and pick how much over priced they are...
      Spyderco are roughly $35+ and Benchmades are roughly $50-75 plus...
      But most still pay the prices. that's the way it's going to stay. I would love to name my price for everything I buy. Like 30 minutes ago when I filled up my Truck tank and realized our gas has gone up. It was about $0.35 over priced per gallon
      but unfortunately its the Knife manufacturers that get to chose the MSRP.
      As long as people pay it they will keep charging it. It's not going away anytime soon gentleman. it's just going to climb even higher in the future. If you want the knife new, pristine, unused & abused you gotta pay the cost.
      Almost Everything in life is overpriced, no?

    • @rpeg6487
      @rpeg6487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BuffaloNickel9 sure, I get it. I actually do think the sage 5 is worth what you're paying for the lightweight version. It's just a spectacular knife and could easily be my "one-and-done" knife. However, it does get harder to justify buying and recommending some of these Spydercos when a few years ago, the Delica was around $65, and the PM2 launched for around $120 if I remember correctly. I love Spyderco, but some of these Chinese brands are hot on their tails as the race to the bottom of who can make the best "budget" knife gets more crowded. Even Hogue, an American knife maker, is making some pretty interesting stuff for a very tempting price.
      But on the other hand, I do love Spyderco and I will keep buying their stuff as long as they keep pushing the envelope when it comes to design and materials.

    • @BuffaloNickel9
      @BuffaloNickel9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rpeg6487 exactly.. most everything is overpriced or taxes you for the brand name.. some worse than others.

      I can get the action how I like it. I know they will be centered, or I have the warranty and can return if it is defective or not centered. the edge hasn't been chopping anything crazy or had someone testing their lack of sharpening skills, the scales aren't scratched, and Ole Bubba hasn't been EDC'ing it near his crotch 😂😂...C'mon now Bubba, nobody wants that!

    I got a Sage 5 LW a couple weeks ago. Other than struggling to get rid of the blade play without overtightening the pivot, it's turning out to be a wonderful EDC knife. Love it. Even the FRN scales feel nice in the hand (to me). I added a little sharpening choil with some tiny diamond files and knocked down a few hard edges on the blade. Wonderful knife for people who don't mind doing some simple finishing touches. Tempted to put a mirror finish on the blade.

    I would love to see Spyderco bringing Sage 5 in other steels than just S30V. Something like Rex45 or Cruwear or even Maxamet. I know that S30V is a good steel, but I would just love to have more choices (at least one more with a little more toughness). And yes, stone wash just looks so much better. I will most likely get Para3 instead and if necessary do a little convexing to the grind to thin out the edge (should I deem it necessary). Basically all my knives are liner or frame locks (the same thing basically), and I would love to get a knife with a compression lock and the Sage looks really sweet.
    The funny thing though is - the 'lightweight" weights just 8 grams (10%) less the carbon/G10 version. So it really is more of a price decision rather than weight one and even there the price difference makes it hard to get the FRN version IMO.

    The crest is for the pocket clip! Its so it doesn’t tear your pockets... it has it in both sides because you can move the clip.

    im sure you also purchased the camera you're using the film this video and the monitor you used to edit it or upload it on right? do those have branding on them? I agree in that knives aren't typically usually over branded but in this case I think there's 2 reasons for it, one is that it's a design they can use to center their bidirectional grip pattern on the scales and 2 it's free brand awareness.

    Thanks for your videos! Q: Is the Sage 5 LW upgradable with 3rd party handle/scales?

  • @Marc-Vickers

    I wish it were actually more popular than the Para 3 so I could find aftermarket scales for it.

    While I do prefer the Sage 5 blade over the Para 3, the Para 3, at least for me, has one strong advantage over the Sage...I already own the Para 3 and the two are pretty darn close that my budget can't stretch for a near (if better) double.

    Does centring of the blade even matter? For me even if the blade is slightly off it never really effected the opening or closing of the blade and it was still tight. I guess it’s mostly about aesthetics?

    Sage 5 with cts-xhp ? I don't own one but have the opportunity to get one now. What do u think about that combo Complex? I don't own that blade steel either. So I guess win win. Just like your opinion on the sage 5 with cts-xhp or sage 1 maxamet. Which I can't get in without overpaying. Can get the other for retail.. Thanks 🙏

    Wish it had chamferring on the handle section near the compression lock. A little tough to get to the lock. Definitely creates a sore spot on my index when i use it consecutively.
    For me, so far, its not better than the para 3. The silhouette closed or open isnt as attractive for me. The action of my particular sage 5 isnt as smooth as my para 3. We'll see when she breaks in more.

    Well, it looks like the 3 best ways to improve on the native5 for all-around daily carry have been applied. +2 blade shape (ramp, cutting edge), +3 lock (compression, duh), +2 clip (wire, deeper). Except looks like they accidentally applied the ++ to the price too
