    As always valuable information has been provided here . As a Cakewalk user for well over 20 years I am happy to see it's alive and thriving as a premier DAW and I am thankful for Mike and his knowledge and expertise in Cakewalk. I recently had someone put down Cakewalk as a substandard DAW but it has been ahead of the game for years. Some of the popular DAW's of today like Logic and Reaper have been based on the foundation of Cakewalk's Sonar Platinum. These other popular DAW's are good but Cakewalk gets the results I need. Bandlab continually updates the program and the community is very strong. I suppose Cakewalk started as a guitar player's platform with Guitar Tracks it has always been overlooked by many. Thanks Mike for you invaluable help.

    For reference: 960 ticks = 1/4, 480 ticks = 1/8, etc. So, a dotted 1/16 would be 360 ticks, a triplet 1/8 = 320 ticks, etc. Just simple math. In the offset example, the 54 ticks are close to 60, which would be 1/64.

    Love this video. Great refresher for me. The audition button in the quantize window will let you sort of preview your changes before you commit. perfect for offset and window settings.

    Great tips, Mike - thanks. For the specific case of playing strings early, I tend to use the Quantize functions normally (without offset), and then use the tracks overall "Time" function to provide the offset (with the track selected, click the MIDI button at the bottom of the Inspector pane - the Time setting is at the bottom right of the Inspector, so you'd set it to, say, -60).

    Quantizing is like spellchecking in a wordprocessor program, one of the greater features in recording, for both audio and MIDI!
    It is also a great practice aid to improve my playing accuracy!

    “Strength”, “offset” and “window”, there it is, the really useful detail I love about these videos. Offset will be excellent on the string section on my current project. The slow attack playing styles on BBC SO really need it in some scenarios.
    Thanks Mike, excellent work, as ever.

    I like to use the midi quantize effect if the whole track needs it, I can easily make fine adjustments. Also I like the midi velocity effect. Both allow me to change my mind later.

    Thanks Mike, this explains why every time I quantize a track, I end up making things worse; window sounds like it's the answer I've been looking for.
    How about a sequel on groove quantizing - another dark art - the understanding of which has eluded me since forever?

    Thanks Mike for a very useful explanation of visualizing quantize through snap values. I struggle a lot with quantizing anything but simple rhythms and often find I have to (for example) select all the Hi Hat notes and quantize them on a different setting to (for example) the kick drum. And then the snare separately again. It's so time consuming. Sometimes I even find I have to manipulate each and every note freehand. Perhaps you could make a tutorial about the Swing function in the Quantize window and how to use it correctly? And what is Groove Quantize all about? Thanks for the great channel Mike.

    I have a question off the topic. When you are gain staging, do you also gain stage the stereo buses. Because the tracks being routed to the stereo buss are all gain stage, is it necessary to also gain stage those buses.

    Can you quantize in the another way, so you can make a perfect crid midi drum to sound more human?

    Good timing as always. I finally picked up a copy of addictive drums this weekend. On a seperate note, are there any kits or beat packs that you would recommend? I've got 3 of each to choose from and just started with Farifax vol 1 and alternative rock.

      Cool! Fairfax and Indie cover a lot of your acoustic needs. If you want something more electronic, Reel Machines is awesome. I personally also like the funk kit, and its handy to have the Jazz Brushes around :)

      Thanks Mike, I was definitley going to get an electronic one as my third choice so I'll check reel machines. I watched your addictive drums setup video the other day which was a massive help. The link to the drum map file no longer works btw, but I managed to find another.

    Does quantizing only work with midi files, or can it work with basic audio files?

    • @sevenfifteen
      @sevenfifteen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can quantize the start times of audio clips. But quantizing the clip contents is done with the audio snap palette.

    • @wojciechstecyszyn6040
      @wojciechstecyszyn6040 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sevenfifteen Yes, you can quantize audio clips. Just be sure you are in "Audio Transient" view of the clip and then you can proceed like in the video above. Audio snap palette is useful but not necessary here.

    • @sevenfifteen
      @sevenfifteen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wojciechstecyszyn6040 Yes, but that requires you to have setup the transient markers correctly before. Which you do with the snap palette. Or am I missing something?

    • @wojciechstecyszyn6040
      @wojciechstecyszyn6040 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sevenfifteen Well, it all depends on the nature of the clip. Sometimes yes, you have to "organise" them transients before Q and sometimes the audio clip is ready for quantizing without any pre-setup.

    • @sevenfifteen

      @@wojciechstecyszyn6040 Thanks for the clarification! I think we are on the same page now. :)

    Should we even use quantize between instruments to a clock? Even a fantastic drummer is off, and I'm always reluctant to use it unless something is really off somewhere, and even then is sounds best if you sync it to a drum take and not a clock. It just destroys the human feel in the end. Tons of great music is reliant on the interaction and feel of good musicians pushing, swaying and playing with the tempo - those tiny 'imperfections' are what make it special. Don't remove them, just play better next time.
