Bernie's argument here was mostly a moral one -- we can all live in a better society if we work to make things better instead of focusing on making money. He's 100% right about that, but there's also an economic argument: most wealthy people make their money through investments, not through a high salary, so anything that makes the market go up is good for people who already have money. Markets yield more profits from a larger GDP with people who are feeling positive about the future. Eliminating childhood poverty and providing excellent education means more skilled people in the workforce, meaning more money floating around, meaning a better market.

@@13bustah "affording to send their kids to Harvard" No, this is misconception. The rich can afford to bribe school officials to accept their kids into Ivy League level schools, this was displayed in a widely known scandal. And studies show that the rich kids who attend Ivy League Schools succeed afterwards because of their elite family connections not the school itself. Perhaps you should read a little more.
Most of them most certainly. Maybe you or me would too if we had tons of money and were raised with that feeling that we can have everything if we want it. Having to struggle in life has a lot to do with who you become. Money simply changes people, at least most of them.
Some do, some don't. We shouldn't stereotype on the basis of family background just like we shouldn't stereotype about ethnicity or sexuality or religion
The question is what kind of country do you want to live in? I am not say wealthy by any means but relatively well off. A country where even those earning minimum wage can live without worry about rent, can take a vacation or two every year, can send their kids to any school they want is the kind of country I want to live in. Not everyone has to be absolutely equal but having to live in neighborhoods hidden behind stone walls for fear of you neighbors one block over sounds like a nightmare.
My child could not go to Harvard. He had the grades. It's a school where people make social connections of the elites. But, the tuition is prohibitive. Rich does not equal best and brightest
I know the question is well meaning and genuine, but, Senator Sanders is right. Are we, the people, going to do what is necessary to make life better for everyone in the country, or are we, the individuals, particularly those with the advantages that wealthy Harvard students have, going to do what is best for only ourselves and our rich Harvard friends?
To all those that come from money at Harvard and elsewhere and don't get it, instead of taking a gap year in europe go spend a year working in shelters and charity kitchen. Why would we humor you when you want to go after the 1% and that’s where we hope to be.” What Bernie should have said: “Because every person who keeps you in business is that 99% from your workers, to your customers, and if it wasn’t for them you wouldn’t have the high horse you’re riding on. We’ve catered to those doing better than most enough as is and it’s done nothing to solve our issues otherwise I wouldn’t be here talking to you today. We tried leaving change up to those whom are doing well and it hasn’t bettered us as a whole and as good as you think you have it nobody is a one man show. What’s in it for you guys you ask? Are all of your goods and services coming from others who are lucky like yourself? Doubtful. Without those less fortunate than yourself you’d be finding yourself lost and having to do the dirty work your privileged hands would refuse to ever do. Society isn’t made up of just you Harvard Grand Students it only works when everyone works together. Just like your brain can’t work if your heart and lungs don’t work you need your organs working together to keep you alive and you need people of different roles and backgrounds to keep civilization going. It’s a “what’s in it for me” attitude that has us on a sinking ship and its people like yourself that feel they are better than others simply because they had better opportunities that are holding us back and got us into the mess we are in today.
I love Bernie but I have to be honest, he did not answer the guys question. To answer the question, I will say that improving the lives of the poor will help everyone. Making the government more efficient helps everyone. There’s a quote I half remember that I think is relevant. ‘I care not for the intricacies of Einsteins brain and more for the near certainty that thousands like him wasted their talents toiling away in fields and factories.’ A rising tide lifts all boats.
...as a starting point, yes. I'm fine with people earning more when they provide more "valuable" work/services/whatever, though there need to be some limits. Nobody provides a thousand times more value to society than the average person, so nobody should earn a thousand times as much (where exactly a reasonable factor might be should be up for discussion, that's where the Veil of Ignorance would be very useful for example). But yeah, the _starting point_ for everyone should be as equal (in terms of money/resources) as we can possibly make it. There'll always be some inequality, but we can minimize it. Far too many people are effectively working on maximizing it, even ones that are suffering from it in the first place (out of ignorance and misinformation, tribalism, ...)
"We need people willing to serve the people." Bernie Sanders The political elites as well as grassroots must be made cognizant that putting self before people is fundamental to daily living, and that includes governance.
Sadly our society doesn't reward those nearly as much who make life commitments like Bernie describes as those who go into business/financial careers. Making money for yourself and stepping on anyone and everyone to get to the top is the not only most rewarded life but celebrated as well. It would seem our capitalist society of competition has enculturated nearly all of us into a value system based on materialism. IMHO this is at the core of our problems and none of our leaders are willing to even bring the topic up.
Bernie is my favorite. I wanted him in both 2016 and 2020. But to be honest what he is saying is a mirage. It will never happen. The way that this World is in ( with BRICS+ coming on), let alone our Nation of the United States 🇺🇸 ( with its overwhelming National Debt and polarized political system) Bernie’s futuristic goals are not going to happen. There has to be a median ground where our governmental leaders can meet in order for a reasonable expectation can be agreed upon.
Like I had said before Bernie Sanders is the best of the senator in America who deserve to be president . He's intellectual , not warmonger , has a good idea for the future , honest , digne , sense of humanity , etc .....may God bless you Bernie your truthful speech relax my soul .
In fact, there is a selfish argument for supporting Bernie's vision if you are already wealthy, which is that people who are trapped in desperate financial situations cannot innovate very well. If we built a society where people didn't have to worry about going into debt just for going to school, getting healthcare, changing careers, raising a family, etc., that's a much better environment to foster new technologies and more meaningful cultural touchstones - things that benefit everyone.
Division within the party would only help Trump at this point. Sadly, I think Bernie would definitely be too old in 2028 for even one term. Getting Hillary as the candidate instead of Bernie was possibly the single biggest mistake that the USA are suffering from, and to _some_ degree a good part of the rest of the world, at least in the last few decades...
I'd of asked that kid how it makes him feel when he walks down the street and passes a homeless person, does it make him uncomfortable? When he understands why, he will understand why its important the use their privelege to return balance to our system.

I'd agree, but your whole argument rests on the assumption of empathy and compassion. That gets trained out of *_so_* many people (not entirely, but it's all too easy to abuse our tribalistic brains and "other" people so that we actually don't feel empathy for them anymore), and there simply are psychopaths born without it, it's sadly an assumption you can't make.

They will never understand this, except for a very few members of this class.
@@polydex108 And this is yet another tragedy. I think it's worth saying anyway. One can hope.
@@triangleunderstanderit is definitely worth saying and repeating. With your permission, I may take a screenshot and save it for later.
@@polydex108 By all means, friend.
@@triangleunderstander thanks. That is some copypasta gold if I ever saw it, but I will include your name for credit.
Speaking to the young at top universities, they are right. They are the product of the current system and there is not much incentive for them to shift tracks for altruistic reasons.
I think the point they need to understand is, besides the gratitude and honor of working for people even economics gets better even for themselves when you can help bring struggling people into higher consumption patterns.
Everyone’s gain is EVERYONE’s gain.
Please listen young people. The future of our country depends on your empathy and compassion. We must all embrace love for one another. It isn't sacrifice if it's done from a place of love. If we each give more than we receive, imagine what a beautiful place the Earth would be.
absolute facts
Fun fact: In the US he may be a leftist. In Scandinavia, many of his causes (such as health care for all ) would be supported by conservatives.
We are on the titanic and the boat is made of money, the passengers are made of greed, and the ocean is the only thing that’s gonna last
The attempt was made. The people at the top won't change a system that they directly benefit from. Tolstoy.
Foreign student from rich family coming to a country that accepted him questioning why he should have to change the politics in the US if he doesn’t get something out of it.

Absolutely right. Guess your guilty of it too.
Rich kids care about Louis Vuitton, Ferraris and Iphones not society.
and affording to send their kids to Harvard to get educated for a high paying job , oh the horror.
@@13bustah "affording to send their kids to Harvard"
No, this is misconception.
We shouldn't stereotype on the basis of family background just like we shouldn't stereotype about ethnicity or sexuality or religion
marx and engels came from money. money doesn't necessarily preclude class consciousness.
Nobody as dedicated or committed as the Bern.
That question is honestly so hilarious to me.
My child could not go to Harvard. He had the grades. It's a school where people make social connections of the elites. But, the tuition is prohibitive. Rich does not equal best and brightest
man gives me chills
Bernie is the definition of wisdom.
Bernie is a closet capitalist.
the grin on the young man's face as he espoused what he thought was a "gotcha" question made me sad.
🇺🇸 B E R N I E 🇺🇸
I know the question is well meaning and genuine, but, Senator Sanders is right. Are we, the people, going to do what is necessary to make life better for everyone in the country, or are we, the individuals, particularly those with the advantages that wealthy Harvard students have, going to do what is best for only ourselves and our rich Harvard friends?
Amen.
To all those that come from money at Harvard and elsewhere and don't get it, instead of taking a gap year in europe go spend a year working in shelters and charity kitchen. You can go home to your nice life each night but spend time talking to people, find out how they got in the position they're in and see what positive change you can bring about 💜
You have a vivid imagination not even me who is poor is going to take my day off to go to know damn kitchen sorry I’m tired.
@@killerjase1 But you are tired because you have to work. When you have the means to spend a year not earning much (or anything at all), you don't have that particular issue.
In a nutshell, only Americans can save the world from "this type of America"
The First Amendment prohibits the government from abridging “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.” It seems that depends on why they are protesting.
That smug kid won’t make the right choices
Smug Rich Kid: “What’s in it for us to help poor people? We were born lucky and with this college on our resume or a degree from here we will only continue to be rich. Why would we humor you when you want to go after the 1% and that’s where we hope to be.”
What Bernie should have said: “Because every person who keeps you in business is that 99% from your workers, to your customers, and if it wasn’t for them you wouldn’t have the high horse you’re riding on.
Great Quest(tion).
I already invented a machine that can reset time and have been using it for 20+ years. I can't do anything more.
They don’t deserve to be wealthy, everyone should have the same wealth
...as a starting point, yes.
"We need people willing to serve the people."
Bernie Sanders
The political elites as well as grassroots must be made cognizant that putting self before people is fundamental to daily living, and that includes governance.
Yep, very well said.
How great can the greatest institution on the titanic actually be? One could make an argument Harvard is the source of the iceberg.

Hey if their loans get forgiven maybe they'll be able to do these things he's suggesting.

TERM LIMITS BURNIEEEE
In fact, there is a selfish argument for supporting Bernie's vision if you are already wealthy, which is that people who are trapped in desperate financial situations cannot innovate very well. If we built a society where people didn't have to worry about going into debt just for going to school, getting healthcare, changing careers, raising a family, etc., that's a much better environment to foster new technologies and more meaningful cultural touchstones - things that benefit everyone.
Plus, the healthier our middle class is, the less susceptible we are to demagogues like Trump who seek to destabilize our democracy.
Put candidacy for president, TODAY
Division within the party would only help Trump at this point. Sadly, I think Bernie would definitely be too old in 2028 for even one term. Getting Hillary as the candidate instead of Bernie was possibly the single biggest mistake that the USA are suffering from, and to _some_ degree a good part of the rest of the world, at least in the last few decades...
so Singaporean accent 😂

Bernie just run again. We need someone new that actually cares about the citizens
I'd of asked that kid how it makes him feel when he walks down the street and passes a homeless person, does it make him uncomfortable? When he understands why, he will understand why its important the use their privelege to return balance to our system.
I’m not rich but typically just keep the head straight poor or rich do the same. Who the fuck looks at someone homeless and say and there are so many I wonder what happened?😂😂😂. Living in a fantasy. You neck would hurt man 😂😂😂.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👂✌️👍
damnnnnnn. Classic W
Although I am a Socialist therefore I don't agree with Bernie; Mr Sanders is the Best choice we got. We Must Unite Comrades
wasting your vote due to America will never be a socialist country.
You can't unite because you are weak and greedy.
youre not a democratic socialist? Bernie is..he just stays with the Dems so he will have a large platform and audience..but i believe if he ran as an independent he could actually win ..
@jurhju Why would a Socialist not be opposed to corruption? Bernie is fighting corruption, the corruption of the United States government by the wealthy. Their corruption is so extreme that they put a thieving, lying, immoral traitor into the most powerful job in the world. Fundamental American values as expressed in the Constitution come first, before party or economic philosophy.
