    Your calculations do appear to be correct sir. I also started young. My mother got really ticked off and sat me in the corner when I was 5 years old, she turned her back and I used a screwdriver to take apart the toaster. My grandfather used to have a Rambler Dealership and I grew up being the gopher for the mechanics in his shop. Used to line up and receive my pay slip with them too. lol
    Keep going on these videos, I am trying to do this as a retirement hobby to fix up these "not so Totaled' vehicles for my kids and grand-kids to drive and you are teaching me allot. Thank you so much.

    Here’s my opinion after working at an auto wreckers for many years. Newer vehicles seem to be designed to have “breakaway” parts on vital components to protect those high dollar parts in the event of a collision. In this case, the rear cover, bellhousing, engine mounts, etc. Can’t really do much about the transfer case though. I could almost guarantee your engine is still good. I also would have gambled $200 on that! Keep up the great work.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well no one asked for your opinion... JUST KIDDING. I like hearing other's thoughts on these builds. I agree with you on everything except for the save the expensive parts, part. Manufacturers couldn't care less about how much it costs, they want that number as high as possible to make you buy a new truck. It is designed to break away but they are actually trying to save the passengers. Dead people don't buy new cars. lol Thanks for watching!

    Recently started watching when you started this rebuild. You've mentioned keeping it as your daily after you finish it. I would recommend doing a CP3 swap and getting rid of the EGR and DPF nonsense. The LML is such a solid power plant and those three things are always the cause of issues. Also WCFab has all your piping that you would need and the conversion kits to do it yourself. It is so much easier when you already have the truck apart. Good luck with the rebuild and look forward to the future videos.

      I am in full agreement. I do have two state test to go through and I don't want any reasons to fail. They really have no say but if they are having a bad day, they can make mine worse just because. I am going to do everything you listed if I keep it but I now have 3 buyers that want it so I may have to let it go. Everything is for sale for the right price. lol

    Aside from any obvious visible damage to the block, the only concern would be the possibility that the crank has a little bend in it. You could run an indicator on the end of the crank, where the flywheel mounts, turn it over slowly by hand, and if there is no run-out its pretty much guaranteed the motor is good. I do have to say I am amazed how cheap that back cover is. I have 19 years of foundry machine shop experience, machined foundry castings is my expertise, I am shocked its only $100. I am betting die cast, cnc machined, made in china. Excellent video. That looks like a fun project, I look forward to the next installment.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did actually check the crank, it was still true. As for the bearings, we will see. I would rather gamble than disassemble everything to measure it all. The Allison ripped from the back of the engine reminds me of a much different Allison , an MH (marine heavy duty) transmission that was ripped off of the back of a Detroit 8V91TI in a 55' Maiora Italian yacht . It hit a submerged shipping container in the Keys after Hurricane Andrew at cruise speed . The adapter plate from the FW housing to the gear was aluminum . Took the gear clean off and the engine was held up by the exhaust system . Ouch .

    All of the drivetrain components that were cracked we're engineered to do so in the event of a crash so the engine falls down instead of going through the cab of the truck. The engine and transmission are a much harder alloy than the other components. I don't foresee any issue with the engine block or even transmission for that matter.

    I noticed when you were pulling the drive shaft that the truck had one of those plastic skid plates on the bottom of the fuel tank; thought about installing one on my 2018 Crew cab sierra. At the front end of the tank - does it end off like a cut piece of plywood or does it make a 90* bend and curve up a bit? If it just abruptly ends at the end of the tank, I just see it digging into the dirt and breaking off.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those thinks are useless. I have two trucks, both are broke. lol They do curve up all the way around but they are paper thin and very rigid. The tank itself is stronger. 0 out of 10 would not recommend!
