This is simply one of my favorite recordings and I have thousands in my collection. Easily one of progs bright spots among many and it’s good to see there are others who feel as I do. Cheers!

AND it holds up today. My favorite Genesis member solo album. I owned the album and thought I was alone in my love for it. * was my favorite album for a couple years.

This album means the World to me. I bought it as soon as it came out in 1980. I can’t believe it hasn’t been remastered. I really hope it will be. It’s just an emotional masterpiece to me.

I only discovered the album a year or 2 back. Its really good stuff. 5.1 would be stunning.

I have loved this album since the first time I heard it back in the 80s and it fits in perfectly within the Genesis family. I still have all of my records and my collection has grown significantly over the last five years or so. My Genesis/solo albums collection alone is over 100 pieces. I have four pressings of Smallcreep's Day. It's one of the best for sure!

I love this album, my favorite Genesis solo album. It deserves a proper 5.1 mix, too!

So great that you love this album. It is one of my all time favourites too. Have just listened to it again. It shines out. Every track. Incredible to think that Compression, with its incredible fade out riff, was a B side. I had the single. Couldn't believe it. Of course, I have loved this album ever since it came out but have never met anyone else who has even heard of it.

Great record that blows away much of the post Gabriel Genesis stuff.

Hi John, I'm Michael from Melbourne, Australia. I've been enjoying your interviews on You Tube for about six months, but never previously subscribed. So what made me subscribe today? When I heard that Smallcreep's Day was one of your top three albums of all time. Everything you say about this album is spot on. "At the End of the Day" is absolutely one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Noel McCalla's voice adds so much warmth to Mike Rutherford's great compositions. This album is special, and I was delighted to see that I'm not the only one who gets it. Cheers, Michael.

Imagine, just in 1979 Genesis members recorded Smallcreep's Day, Spectral Mornings, PG3 and Curious Feelings. Put all of them together at that time and they would have ended up with at least a great double album on par with the best Genesis albums. That being said, Smallcreep's day is a great album, especially the long title track suite.

Two albums that have escaped the 'luxury box set' genre that deserve the treatment are Smallcreep's Day and Peter Gabriel 1 (the car album)

Great interview and I really hope that Brian can get a positive response from Mike in remixing the album. Even better if they could get together and do something live, that would be far better use of Mike's time than the current Mechanics lineup. So after the Genesis reunion tour later this year (can't wait) this should be Mike's follow up project. The album is probably the most underrated album of all time. It is without any shadow of doubt the best of all the Genesis members and ex members solo projects. The personnel on the album are a superb mix of artists and I absolutely love the vocals of Noel McCalla. Every song blends so perfectly into the next with 'At the End Of The Day' the outstanding slow track. The album is so good that I can't decide which is my favourite track. It was released when Genesis were in a 'purple' patch with the tremendous David Hentschel on production and engineering. I also agree with John in that it is as good as anything Genesis have done as a band. It was a great shame that Mike never toured with it but I guess 'Duke' would have got in the way, however I think Paul Young would have done a great job on vocals if they had included any tracks in Mike & The Mechanics early sets. Problem is I don't think Mike actually realised that it was as good as it is.

It’s interesting which albums were kept on that perilous day when we tossed most of them in favor of CDs. Good call, John. :)

    Hi John.
I am a massive Genesis fan and have seen this album in the album catalog in back of Genesis books but somehow never got to hear it. Maybe if the price is right and have some time... it may be a good time to finally discover it.
God bless and please be well

Listening to my favorite albums by Genesis members, in absolute random order and unranked: Smallcreeps Day, A Curious Feeling, The Geese and the Ghost, Spectral Mornings, PG3 and Face Value, I can't help but noticing how there seems to be common denominator, musically, for Tony, Mike, Ant and Steve while Peter and Phil, albeit diametrically opposite one from another don't necessarily belong there. It's a pity Steve and Tony never really gotten along, they have a lot in common musically and could have collaborated more, although imo Tony is vastly superior as a songwriter.

Mike has always been dismissive of these previous works, even about the Gabriel era music. But, as we all know, artists often need a producer, or at least someone else, to decide which are the best songs, or the ones suited to be hit singles. Musicians have other takes on the songs they wrote. Sad thing, this record is just umbelievable, the songs, the musicianship, the voice ! In my book it stands on par with Selling England. It deserves a lot more than the credit it gets.

I am totally with you on SCD. Since I first bought the album in 1980 it has remained in my top 5 of all time ever since. Theres not a weak song on the whole album and the playing and Noel's vocals are simply wonderful!

Great album but hate the original mixing and mastering. Simon Phillips drums are played brilliantly but don’t cut through in the mix and sound super compressed like something from early 70s.
