McCalla elevated that album. And the material was already great. Ant’s keyboards add a lot.

I was stunned when I first heard this album back in march 1980. I bought this with Duke and Gentle Giant's last album Civilian (A hat-trick purchase indeed!) and was and still blown away by Small Creeps. The musicianship is A+, the writing is A+ and Noel's vocals are A+++. Small Creeps is even better than Voyage of the Acolyte which is also an A effort. I'm unclear why Mike changed his writing character following SCD but al least he penned this masterpiece.

It was today that it suddenly occurred to me I had no idea what Noel McCalla looked like.
I bought this album a little while after its release, I had discovered Genesis through an introduction to Peter Gabriel. And when I found a band I really liked alot, I bought everything I could by them. Including solo albums, if the cover looked interesting, or the titles. I just wanted to hear everything they did, as individuals, as a band.
(except for Tony Banks. I never picked up a single thing he did. I think there's a reason for that. I think)
The problem I had with Genesis, although I love them, is that everything they did pre Trick of the Tail I know by heart. And everything they did after Abacab I know by heart. (But I stopped after Invisible Touch. I had heard too many OHHH HOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHS coming from Genesis. They were becoming so formulaic, but unto THEMSELVES, that I didn't believe music even mattered anymore.)
But Wind & Wuthering / And Then There Were Three / Duke. I'm telling you, I've listened to the albums, and I simply cannot remember how the songs go, barring "Blood on the Rooftops", and the subsequent singles from the other albums. Literally cannot remember a note. Even after I've just heard it. This happens to me with Radiohead and Dream Theater as well. Not a note. I think they're all brilliant musicians, but not a thing sticks in my brain.
Mike Rutherford's Smallcreep's Day HAS STUCK IN MY BRAIN SINCE I BOUGHT IT. I love this album. I think it's one of the best Genesis albums!!!! I like it more than those 3 albums mentioned!
I was listening to it today, just to remind myself how great it is, and I was listening to Noel McCalla sing "Moonshine" (just such an awesome song) and I thought, hey, he sounds black sometimes. I never noticed that once in all these years, and with his name I just assumed he was as white as the driven snow. :D But he's not. I believe he's mixed, yes? I'm mixed, so I can say these things! I applaud myself for detecting his roots in just a couple of notes sang, but my ignorance in not finding out more about the man, who has such a great voice and delivery, is just shameful.
Thanks for this upload, and Steve Hackett's applause for this album, because it is one of the best things a member of Genesis released. I wish Mr. Rutherford had more affection for it, because I think the album is a complete success. The musicians, the vocals, the arrangements, the engineering and production. It just has no weak moments. Its second side actually improves on its first side! How many albums do that??

One of my favorite albums ever. I bought it at "Record Theater" in Buffalo in the late 80s. I had no idea what it was. I love Genesis, so I gave it a try. Glad I did. It's phenomenal.

I love Noel’s voice. We are lucky enough over here to have him ‘on tap’ so to speak. A priceless experience was when I took a then girlfriend who liked her Motown to see Noel for the first time with his own band and to watch her face when he opened his mouth. Priceless ❤

Smallcreeps Day is truly a great album. This album came out right about the time I was starting to get into Genesis. I bought this album and Genesis live album Seconds Out (which I consider one of the best live albums ever made certainly one of the cleanest sounding especially for that time). I really wish Mike Rutherford would have released some of those songs as singles or even did a video like he did in his Mike and the Mechanics days. Maybe he did not want to step on Genesis toes. I think a song like, At the End of the Day could have been a big hit as a single release. One of these days a famous modern band will discover this album and do a few covers of the songs which will spark a rejuvenation of interest for the original album. I wonder if they live version of At the End of the Day exists? I haven’t been able to find anything on TH-cam live. It’s frustrating whenever members of Genesis are interviewed Rutherford is never asked about this album.

Small Creep's Day has got a cult status nowadays, but is still an underated gem,. Nor Tony Banks, Phil Collins or even Steve Hackett, the most faithfull to the old Genesis sound, were able to emulate Genesis music that well. It's not only a fantastic album, but one of the best Genesis albums in my opinion. Sad and shame thing is that Mike despises it, as he does with all the old stuff : "not that good, didn't sell well, blah blah blah... " what a pity !

This is one of those albums that I cannot hear in cuts. It must play from start to finish. I have played holes in Smallcreeps Day. It is one of the best things from genesis that isn't genesis. (It is also interesting that Tony's first album "Curious Feeling" was his best and it came out around the same time).

Yep John, I’ve always felt like you do about this one of a kind album. Totally underrated. Noel’s unique powerful soulful voice, Simon’s God of Thunder drumming. Ant and Mike together again like old times. (I wish those two would have collaborated more then, there might have been more vigor in Ant’s somewhat ponderous works maybe). Everyone was at the right place at the right time for this one. Words mean nothing though. The listening never gets old and is indeed life changing!

Ponderous, indeed a good word for it,
Yet I like, on the whole, his ponderous output.
His various, sometimes little streams or 'silent pools' to ponder in.

While not rating it quite as highly as John, it would probably be in my top 20 or 30 favorite albums list.
Quite possibly my favorite Genesis-solo album, NOT by a former Genesis lead guitarist. IE, Steve Hackett or Anthony Phillips.

Wow! You’re the only other person I ever “met” who loves Smallcreep’s as much as I do! I think it came out in ‘79 actually, around the same time as Tony Banks’ freshman solo record, “A Curious Feeling”, with that haunting cover with the painting titled, “Wuluwait, Boatman of the Dead”. That album was sung for Tony by Kim Beacon, another amazing vocalist, who was as good for Tony as Noel was for Mike. I’ve purchased multiple copies of both, in LPs, Cassettes, and CDs during these 40 years..Both of them are on my “Desert Island” list. First time caller here, love your stuff! Buying a T-shirt right now.

@@RockHistoryMusic Hi, off the top o’ my head, the remaining 8 would be, in no particular order: Rush/Hemispheres, UK/UK, Yes/Going For The One, Peter Gabriel/Plays Live, Kate Bush/Hounds Of Love, Robin Trower/Bridge Of Sighs, Max Webster/A Million Vacations, Paul Simon/The Rhythm of the Saints, and Genesis/Seconds Out. Boy, I’ll need to get more luggage to carry another 10, no way I could spend the rest of my days on said proverbial Island with only 10 albums! If I were to have any ad-on luggage, I’d most certainly throw into the pile, Kansas/Two For The Show, Steve Hackett/Live at Nearfest, Elton John/11/17/70, Queen/Sheer Heart Attack,, 10,000 Maniacs/In My Tribe, Gary Moore/Still Got The Blues, Rufus Wainwright/Want One, The Tubes/Love Bomb, Todd Rundgren/Ra!
So there, how do you like me now?
Cherry on top? Bruford/One of a Kind
A cheater would smuggle some Zep, Beatles, and what, no Pink Floyd/Dave Gilmour? Oh the pain, so many others. Oh well, sucks being stranded and marooned.

Well, knock me over with a feather. I've owned SmallCreep's Day since I bought the album in 1980 (stll have the LP). I never bothered to follow up and get more info on Noel McCalla. I had no idea he was black. I just assumed he was a typical pale white English chap, 😆.
This was a surprisingly great album by Rutherford and is arguably the best solo album release of all the Genesis guys from start to finish. Just bought the re-released cd even though I still have my Passport original. I was hoping they would have put Compression on it as a bonus track.
Just befuddling to me how MR (with great help from Ant Phillips) could go from this great Progressive rock album to Acting Very Strange, which is well...the opposite. Very strange indeed.
Its also bizarre that Rutherford doesn't seem to care as much about this album as Genesis fans do. I don't think MR has ever performed any of it live, even with the Mechanics. A shame, this album deserves more exposure. Thanks to Noel for playing some of it live. He should get together a band and do the full album live at small venues. I guarantee if properly marketed through the right prog rock channels, he could do well in the NY/Jersey/Philly/Balt eastern seaboard plus cities like Cleveland, Chicago/Mil.

thanx for talking about this wonderful one ... thought it was completly forgotten i still listen to it in my car...
an old friend gave me at that time melt from p. gabriel and that one ...so creative and inspiring ...
by the way Mc calla did voices on acting very strange which is underrated too (copeland on drums) ..
Rutherford later wanted with the mecanics tracks more "mainstream " and did it with success but honestly was not the same level to smallscreep ....only my opinion ...amen

Just think if Mike had saved the SmallCreep's Day suite for Genesis on the Duke album. Toss Alone Tonight, Man of our Times, Please Don't Ask out. Give Misunderstanding back to Phil to put on Face Value. You'd have both the Duke Suite and SmallCreep's Day Suite, plus the best remaining tunes. What an awesome album that would have been.

I too simply adore his voice..."At the and of the day"....woooow! I really like the whole album, although I think Simon Philips was a bit over the top...a bit too much...a but too busy. But yeah....its a "cult" album. And I like Compression too. It was hard to get in 1999 :)

    • @kbrewski1
      @kbrewski1 ปีที่แล้ว

Have you listened to SmallCreep's Day? It's at least as good or better than ATTWT and Duke. It was better than PGs first 2 albums. It is better than almost all of Hackett's solo albums with the possible exception of the first 3. Its better than Phil's solo albums.
Tony's A Curious Feeling is right up there with it, but the SCD suite nudges it up over that too.
