Chester plus Phil plus Simon in the same rehearsal space with 2 Octoplus kits to boot? That sounds pretty damned near heaven on earth!

It was tight.. the smaller room there wasn't large.. I was in that room with Les Pyne's band & Simon was in the big room with Chopyn a band that he was in with Ray Russell.. They'd both played on Les's album that we were rehearing to tour.. @@andywharam4846

I remember an interview with Jeff Beck back in 1982, and Beck was demoing his latest LP with a brand new Linn Drum, and he said something like, "I made the drum tracks so complicated that only Simon Phillips could play them, so I supposed I should hire him." Nice compliment from a true Rock God.

I can't believe this interview is happening. I discovered Smallcreep's Day at a used record shop in LA back around 1985, one of the best finds ever. But I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about it! Peter Gabriel told his story on TLLDOB, Mike Rutherford told his story on SD, a job well done.

Anyone that knows Simon’s work knows that he’s phenomenal. But in my opinion, he STILL doesn’t get enough praise. I’ve never been less than completely blown away by his work. Especially his work on Pete Townshend’s Deep End shows back in ‘85-‘86.

In the early 2000’s I did work for Toto and I always loved talking to Simon; I was a huge fan. I had to stop asking him about making this record. He remembered it well enough but not like me as I’ve always been a fanatic for it. Simon is one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet.

The reaction Simon Phillips has to his own somehow forgotten masterpiece is priceless!
John, you are a GREAT interviewer, allowing Simon time to reacquaint himself to his past greatness, you always give whomever you interview time to follow their thoughts, on or off topic- which often leads to surprising and revealing places!

There was a fair bit of cloak and dagger as the transition between Gabriel era/Collins era line ups were set.
For example: I have heard that the band had one guy in mind to take over vocals, Phil's words: 'our last great hope'
      Who was that person...?
Nobody ever says...who the hell was that??!
      I love these mini-docx videos.
Smallcreeps is one of my favorite albums from that time.
Agree with Simon, drums are all muddy in the final mix.
Would love to see this get remixed!!!

WOW! LOVE Simon Phillips, LOVE Smallcreep’s Day! This is THE BEST interview clip on this channel, THANK YOU!! Mike Rutherford needs to reconsider re-releasing that album, he’s nuts for blowing it off. That’s actually incredibly inconsiderate, not only to his fans, but also to the musicians who played on that album. I like Mike, but he’s a peculiar character.

James Roman - funny, I never thought about Simon. But you’re absolutely right; in fact, he’s actually a tighter drummer than Phil. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Phil’s drumming style. But it’s a slightly sloppy style, kind of patterned after Keith Moon, of whom Phil was a big fan. Simon would have fit the bill perfectly, I think!

Also while I remember, the vocals of the superb Noel McCalla opened me up to this voice. One of the most underrated voices to come out of the UK. His body of work with Manfred Mann's Earthband is a joy to listen to. Along with Chris Thompson, a defining voice of the Earthband. Last I saw he was doing a Stevie Wonder show in the UK. This guy did the perfect job with Rutherford's songs.

Out Into The Daylight for me is the best track on the album. Small Creeps Day is Mike Rutherford's best solo album. I bought this album when first released and I think thats when I first noticed Simon's brilliant drumming. I have a very rare copy on cd also. Never knew Simon got a call from Phil to tour after Bill left, before Chester joined. Great interview. Thank you!👍😊

I’ve listened to/read many interviews with wonderfully down-to-earth Mike Rutherford. Imo, he’s too hard on Genesis’ catalog of music, so the lack of enthusiasm for Smallcreep’s Day shouldn’t surprise me, but it’s undeserved. Smallcreep’s Day is a phenomenal prog concept work!

Great interview with an awesomely classy Mr. S.P. Also the way he speaks (pronounces his English) he is so easy to understand which isn't always true for Mike R. And think he played on Smallcreep's Day not long after he had recorded Sin After Sin with Judas Priest. And not long after: a debut solo album with Michael Schenker. All that despite admitting he liked being more jazzy....

Simon had a huge hand in the crafting of the Jeff Beck album "There & Back". If anyone reading this hasn't heard it, then CHECK IT OUT! You will be blown away by the songs and the drumming, oh, and the guitars too.

    • @davidkyle2073
      @davidkyle2073 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You forgot how integral Tony Hymas and even Jan Hammer were to the writing (major composers over Beck and Phillips) and aural soundscape. I was fortunate to see the There and Back tour having been a huge fan since Blow and Blow and subsequently a huge Simon fan as well.
On a related note, Collins basically fired Bruford mid tour cuz the band wanted the security of hearing a Collins replicator on stage each night. Chester seemed happy to simplify and fit that bill, but creative geniuses like Bruford and Philips would never be confined or appreciated in that limited space.

I was so impressed by his 6/8 drumming that I came out to buy it instantly. Smallcreep's Day is one of my favourite albums from ex-Genesis personnel, together with some S. Hacket albums. John,
Chuck here; i've seen e few of your videos but when I see Simon and then "Small Creep's Day" , I couldn't open it fast enough
This album is also one of my ALL TIME FAV's.
Just as you quoted that the instrumental Coming in to Daylite changed your life, so did the track "Time and Time Again" [I think that is the name] change mine,
I could not get enough of that album
I was in to Genesis at that time big time and bought the LP and I think I found the cassette NO CD however was found; what I did was downlload the album to Itune's thru a turntable they made to perform that function.
I wonder if you've heard any more about a re-release of the album [if any]. I know this comes almost 2 yrs after this you tube of yours was out but I hope you get back to me
Thank you so much for all you do with your channel

I can remember finding a cassette of Smallcreeps Day in a sale bin at the HMV store in London, back in the day. I slipped it into my Sony Walkman that day and I must have listened to that album every day for the next few years. What Simon adds to those songs is just superb. I found it on CD many years later, again in a sale bin and have found it in charity shops recently. One of the best albums ever and hardly anyone knows about it. Simon should re-mix the album with his drummer's ear and producer's hat - it would be sublime. He should do the same with Toyah's album 'Warrior Rock' another superb drumming marathon from Simon, but a lot got lost in the mix. All the best songs/albums have well defined drums, the engine of any band.A good producer knows this.
