My roommates are both Mexican.and don't speak English so I speak.Spanish more than English. (I am American). If you speak english I recommend learning german or french first as they are are from the same language family and thus much easer to learn than most asian languages.
I speak French and English. I want to learn Korean and Japanese! I'm scared I wouldn't be able to keep up with all. Also, it's tough and hard to stay motivated.
My son grew up as a bilingual (Chinese/German). Nevertheless as an infant it was difficult for him to switch quickly between these two languages and it was impossible for him to translate. That changed when he was around 6 years old. A funny experience was a visit to the U.S. when he was five. He tried to speak German to his US/Chinese cousin and she tried to speak English to him. It took me quite a while to convince both children that they need to speak Chinese to each other. Finally they switched to Chinese and I was no longer part of this conversation.

It's not your incredible ability to switch between languages that makes these videos so compelling (as utterly impressive as it is), but your natural and sincere ability to connect with and converse with people on a relatable level. In a world where isolation, introversion and misanthropy (mainly here in he West) are increasing in normality, it's refreshing to see someone go out of their way to connect.

I believe it very much depends on people and it´s an individual skill, it´s not just about sheer will. I am an extrovert, it´s inherited and always found it easy to connect with people, also find it very easy to gain trust which is at times a bit unsettling, believe it or not. My best friend tries hard and although we share many of the same traits people just don´t respond that well to him, he often gets the "cold shoulder".
To add to the mystery I am never polite, I often just speak my mind and will not lie under any circumstances just to please. Not rude either, I just have found this sweet balance of just being me without a mask. Anyway, happy New Year.

I love how just because you were able to speak 3 languages that guy kept calling out to you every time and day he saw you. Like he was absolutely enthralled. It was pretty neat to see.
Im japanese speaker (learned) and most people claim to speak languages, but know basics and have terrible accent, yours actually sounds almost natural (some VERY small sounds, but as a english native its VERY good with almost no accent) and you can actually talk with people and from what i heard you know pretty advanced wording and do not limit yourself to very basic conversations so awesome job!

This was so wholesome and cute, especially when people open up more and are willing to talk because you're clearly interested and they probably haven't spoken to real life Americans or Europeans before. I hope to do this one day but there are barely any Japanese or Korean people in the UK I can practice with.
You’re right. I’ve had lots of people say they’ve never spoke to a foreigner before.
I live in the Uk and I can’t even speak to my family In Korean because my brothers are a bit racist if that’s the right word and at my old school it’d bring my gears when we watched a video on China and people were pulling the eyes and just speaking nonsense no even understanding that it’s the same sort of foreign sounds that they will hear to listen to someone speak English or Spanish or even Korean so I always would just sweat from second hand embarrassment for the people that don’t know that this sort of thing happens in school still and the teachers did nothing even though everyone was silent but the people joking about it, I just wish western secondary schools would invest in teaching us Asian languages because you can’t combat racism with people being ignorant to the importance of language and all my school taught us was Spanish because it was “easiest” and so I would often write some simple Korean sentences in my book such as “안녕 만나서 반가워.” Meaning “Hello it’s nice to meet you” and my teacher would ask how and why I’m learning 2 languages as Korean isn’t on the GCSE list so I just replied with “I want to understand different languages and be able to help people in need that can only speak a certain language and my plan is to learn Korean, Japanese, and, Chinese and move to Korea.” I also asked why the school never did education on this topic as without knowledgeof this then you’ll never know that what you and other people are doing wrong and as a quiet “weird” person because I was learning an Asian language so I spent my time speaking to people in the yard just expressing what I liked and my views on the topics and because I moved to a UTC school this year I asked them to continue what I wanted and to say and tell people why it’s important to learn about Asian language and culture as I’m 13 and this happened when I was twelve, I can currently speak half fluent Korean though I can’t pronounce some characters right because I have some lisp type thing so i can’t speak properly. I just hope one day when my grandchildren are in school I can see a circle of different ethnicities all together and there be no racism in sight, even though currently with how the world pans out right now it could be a fantasy but my hopes are there and they will forever be there. Sorry it was so long I just am passionate about this and had to get it off my chest.

I am currently living in Taiwan and can speak Chinese. I have experiences like this all the time. It just amazes me that I even though I live in their country they still don’t expect people that don’t look like them to be able to understand them.
To speak in different languange is already amazing, but speaking with their own accent is much more amazing and you did that👏👏👏
Uhh, well she didn't speak with Chinese accent... Her Japanese sounds much better though... Overall not bad... The Chinese girl who was born in China and moved to Japan has a nice accent in both Chinese (southern accent) and Japanese... Given, she's considered native in those languages lol

As an American, I can relate to the regret of not growing up in a strongly multilingual environment. I really wish we had robust language education broadly offered starting in elementary school. I realized I want the ability to see the world through the lens of different languages, and be able to connect with people in different cultures and countries. I've been a long time student of Spanish, and in the past year, Japanese. I love seeing your videos and how you've created this life for yourself through years dedication, hard work, and consistency. Always cheering you on!
Same here, always wished. I messed up when I took German in High School though because after I was done with school, nobody I knew spoke it. I fell out of practice and now I only remember bits and pieces. That's not good because now my memory is starting to fail...
I'm a Canadian, and was lucky enough to have parents who wanted my brother and I to learn a second language (French) even though they come from a mainly English-speaking country (England). It's lots of fun to use, and I'm currently taking an ASL course. I hope to learn the Asian languages one day as well, and maybe move there. I'm really happy for you that you managed to learn a new language, I find language studies really interesting, especially with friends and family. Good luck! :)

I speak English and Spanish ( I’m American of Dominican descent) and sometimes when I speak With my family I use what we call Spanglish. I still find it so strange that when speaking a mix of English and Spanish we still understand eachother perfectly and the sentences somehow make sense grammaticaly. For example, “Puedes pasar me the thing over there?” I think it’s really cool to be able to switch between languages and I want to be able to add Japanese into the mix one day :3

I absolutely love how friendly and welcoming the people on your journeys are. They are so open to speak with you and seem like some of the most genuinely kind cultures of people. They’re always impressed with your skillsets and so so so sweet. I wish more Americans could engage like this with people from other parts of the world. In their native languages. We can learns so much from one another instead of fearing any differences we might have. I am honestly embarrassed of the reputation most American’s have. We need more people like you who are so respectful and loving towards different cultures and languages.
I'm making a conscious effort to interact with people as individuals, and not simply as generic Americans, Indians, Russians, et al. Most nationalities and ethnicities come with a built-in set of negative stereotypes, and sometimes you meet people who just have the stereotypes attached, and not built-in, if that makes any sense.
I mean, anyone who comes to the USA should be speaking English. Most of her vids she's stating "learn the language of the country you're in". So by saying "you wish more Americans engaged" that's crazy talk. OTHERS should be learning our language. Why be embarrassed?

Seesh, I did grow up with a Japanese (native) father who tried to teach me Japanese, and I was exposed to a lot of Japanese including travelling to Japan every two years. I can't even speak English properly, let alone a lick of Japanese, yet here you are with no exposure as a child rocking so many languages. Very impressive! Just found your channel, maybe I'll try to learn and, I mean, my dad lives in the same town as me now, so I could get plenty of practice / he and his side of the family are just a phone call away...
Imagine me going to Japan (by myself or with my wife, without my father) and the sad looks I get when they find out I don't know Japanese yet my last name is Japanese. Yet any foreigner that even learns こんにちは and every Japanese is just impressed and grateful that they're trying.
You’re so brave having left behind your native country and leaving abroad. I also truly wish to learn Japanese and I am working hard on it. I would add a fourth language to my list on top of knowing a bit of Spanish. I truly admire you for being so fluent and easily being able to switch languages.
As a person that grew up in a bilingual family, sometimes I switch languages mid sentence, because of not able to recall the word, it feels like broken English or broken Chinese. But it's really fun to switch between language. It gives you the feeling that you've come far in learning the language to be able to do that

I just found your channel. I am amazed by your skills! My mother was born and raised in Korea and always spoke Korean around me. Being the stubborn person I am, I refused to acknowledge let alone in speak it growing up. I remember telling her I didn't want to learn Korean because I was embarrassed by it. Now I wish I had taken the time to listen to my mother and learn it fluently. It would have helped so much during my trips to Korea when she would send me over to spend time with my family members.

For anyone who wants to learn a new language or for those who are shy to speak in a different language to those who are fluent… this is the most encouraging, endearing, honest & educational channel to watch.
In my beginning years in Germany I worked for a German moving company that did moving and transporting for the US military. I barely spoke German when I first started at the job. However having to communicate between German co-workers and American customers helped tremendously to improve my language capabilities and allow me to become fluid in speaking and understanding German. That along with reading and writting as much as possible in the language one wants to learn will increase ones vocabulary automatically. The brain is truely amazing with the speed at which it can function without mistakes when it has been trained properly. I must say Anming makes me a bit jealous with her Chinese & Japanese abilities though. I guess When she has mastered Korean she will move on to Thai or Vietnamese. 🤔
Ha ha, I think Korean will be the end of it. 😆 I can only maintain a high level in a few languages without forgetting things.

Being multilingual is a definite advantage in the job market. I speak French, German, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean. I have also learned bits of Arabic and Hebrew. So keep up with your studies and I'm sure you will go far.

I never really thought about how hard it must be to switch between them especially since the sentence structures can be so different. The way anyone can do that is remarkable but also goes to show how talented we all can be. I loved how you were able to connect with others and relate to their own stories as well and yet stay very humble. Many props!
I wasn’t too good at it at first. Nobody is. It takes practice and getting used to just like anything else.

The kind girl you talked to at the restaurant in Chinatown was so sweet. Glad to know that the nervousness of making a mistake when speaking a foreign language goes both ways. You're so right though, it only matters that you're understood. Eventually you'll get the correct expression/format, but it's the effort that really matters to people.
I start French classes later this month. I’m 34 and I’ve only ever studied Japanese on and off since I was 12 years old, so I’m a bit nervous about the transition from an East-Asian language to a Romance language, but this video gives me hope 😆
French is fairly easy for an English speaker, because of the shared vocab. Good luck!

Lol, I still remember this one sentence in a worksheet that was silly. The whole class latched onto it as a joke and unfortunately it’s one of few things I still can recite:

Inspiring! I moved to Spain two years ago and I keep putting off developing my language skills but after listening to a lot of your videos 2022 is the year to get my finger out!
I love switching languages to talk to my brother in front of others, it's always hilarious to see their reactions (even though Canada has French as its second language)! It's also quite convenient if we want to talk to each other without impeding on others or want to say something. I've been learning ASL as well (and teaching my brother as I go), so that's also useful, especially since I don't have to raise my voice :)

I have always wanted to learn another language. Living in Texas, learning Spanish would make sense. But I have always been drawn to Japanese. I love these videos and they have inspired me to start to look at learning. Im not getting any younger!
I too grew up envious of bilingual families. My grandmother is from Portugal and spoke Portuguese. My grandfather was Japaneese and Chamorro and I wasn't around him enough either. My father is military and I was never near them enough to learn (before cell phones and video chats) and then I married a military man and never lived near family (still don't). I feel I missed out on a lot. My mother was embarrassediof her foreign roots as a child (being from Guam with immigrant parents and also poor) so she refused to speak the languages and hid her background. So she was unable to pass any languages to me. I'm sad about it, but watching you and being able to pick up on certain phrases and words you say makes me happy 😊💜
Ahh my mom is Chamorro from Saipan though she doesn’t know any languages from her ancestry(Japanese, Korean, Filipino). She speaks Chamorro and English was more like her second language(she kind of knew it as a kid, she just never used it). It wasn’t til she moved to the states is when she actually had to use her broken English and now she’s lost her accent though she still sometimes forgets to add those S’s. It makes me a little bummed out she never taught me how to speak it. Not to mention my grandma on my dad’s side is half Mexican and knows the language too along with my dad knowing a good portion. The only things I really know are the few words my mom spoke in Chamorro and the bits I picked up watching telenovelas with my great grandma(whom I called nana). Watching telenovelas was funny though since I had no idea what they were saying most of the time yet I couldn’t look away bc of the drama. I was for sure immersed in the cultures and food but unfortunately not the languages though I’m taking Spanish now.
Edit: I forgot to mention even though my mom didn’t pass her language she sure passed on her broken english🥲It’s even more embarrassing being a native English speaker with broken English.

I also studied Chinese in my undergrad and went to China but I lost most of it, I did understood these basic interaction in Chinese though, I should re-polish my Chinese a bit as well :) Loved the video, as a polyglot myself this was very motivating! xx

I love the advice at the end. I really want to learn Japanese and Korean but I am trying to focus really hard on Korean first then try Japanese when I am more advanced. It is hard to stick to things long term seeing other people do so well. It is hard to believe one day I could fluently speak another language but as you said, one step at a time.

I appreciate the links :) along with you telling locals you should be speaking their language when they were surprised. I agree, if you are going to visit or live somewhere, it is respectful to learn the culture and easier to feel one with the environment.

SO good and so not mixed up!! Power lah! When I get excited (esp in bars, ha ha!) my friends tell me I speak Fraclish, because it is English, Singlish and a little Mandarin all very fast in the same sentence. 😅 I need to watch you more! Now subscribing. 🤩
My family lived in Hawaii in the 70's and as a kid I would watch the Japanese stations. I never was able to speak with other Japanese speaking people but now that I'm listening to your conversations it seems so familiar! Languages are so amazing and I think we take them for granted. You have inspired me so much. I was in Japanese Club in elementary school but when I moved to a very rural small town, the only foreign language to learn was Spanish. Fast forward a decade (ok more than that) All three kids love anime and my daughter is very interested in learning Japanese, so we are going to learn together. I’m sure she will pass me quickly (she’s almost 13) but I’m going to try my best to keep up with her! Recently my mom was cleaning out the rest of my old room and found a lot of my old Japanese club stuff (my name plate I had made, etc) one step at a time.
