- My friend Becca who speaks great Mandarin, some Cantonese, Shanghainese, and GREAT Spanish went bargain hunting and haggling at the Chinese clothing markets in NYC's Flushing Chinatown. We got some crazy discounts!!! A veritable market spree! We walked up to various Chinese vendors, started speaking with them in English, and then switched over mid-conversation to Mandarin and Cantonese (and Fuzhounese, Shanghainese, and Spanish). Their reactions were hilarious! Hope you enjoy this day in our lives! And hopefully this is helpful to you guys in your language learning journeys!

@@sayusaymee7722 Laoshu can have basic conversations with 80-90% of the world which is extremely impressive(he "knows" more languages than most polyglots) , but Xiaomanyc and Becca are much more fluent in Chinese(Laoshu's main second language), and Spanish(for Becca) than he is so they can have deep conversations in those languages because they've lived there or visited while he has not.
They're all skilled and extremely intelligent people just in different ways. I wish I had the capacity to know even 20% of what they know about languages.

Come to central Europe were countries only have 1 digit million people. These things happen daily around here. Not Chinese and spanish but with Hungarian, Serbian, German, Slovenian, Croatian and Bosnian and sometimes English

Oh, I love the way she said "Queremos dos cafecitos", because it's the way we speak in Canary Islands. Very good spanish, I almost couldn't hear an accent, even the "R" were very well pronounced. If you want to order a coffee without milk, you can say "café solo". Well impressed.

What’s funny is how “crazy” he thought it was that she spoke Spanish, which is a much, much easier language for a native English speaker to learn than Chinese.

Chinese grammar is similar to english while Spanish is different so I don't think this is true. This is what I've learned from watching Laoshu505000 (he has said the same thing multiple times) and trying to learn Spanish as a native English speaker. Spanish is much easier to write than Chinese but not easier to learn to speak for a native English speaker.

I thinks isn’t not the same lol because first of all he doesn’t even know Spanish, (or at least he’s not a native Spanish speaker) and secondly it’s way more common to see a white person speaking Spanish (at least in America) lol like just look at the Dominican lady’s reaction, she wasn’t surprised at all, she was probably thinking “oh great another gringa trying to speak Spanish to me” no big deal

I find solace in the fact that I probably COULD learn multiple languages if I tried, I mean I'm almost at a very basic conversational level in Spanish after 2 years of Spanish I and working at a Texmex restaurant for a year

I gave up after 1.3 (I would say .5 because I can’t read or write but I’m not that good so I’ll give myself .3) languages.

The only time I ever shocked someone was when my collegue and I were talking Dutch, got intterupted by a Spanish friend in English passing me her order in German to the German bartender while in the middle of that getting interrupted by two french girls, in french asking me if I was Flemish or Waloon seeing the country ID on my badge said Belgium which I replied to in French before adding to my order in German. I'd love to learn a language like Mandarin but it seems intimidating.

The funny thing is she used "Que tal?" which is used more in Central American Spanish than Caribbean Spanish. Just like Chinese, Spanish has its own dialects, though obviously not as nuanced as Chinese. That language is far harder to grasp!
