I speak Spanish but not as formal or vast as you. I learned it at home from my parents that had very little formal education. Props to you. And I believe the reaction from her not believing how well your Spanish is, is due to your Spanish accent it sound like a norther accent.

Language does that, I enjoy speaking Spanish with my Latino friends just to hear the way that it sounds; the flow, the accent, vowels, consonant switching, etc.. I thought I was a wordsmith with English, but combining my rudimentary Spanish with my English and then directly translating it, I can come up with some really intensely worded sentences back in English, and I'm sure the same is true for any foreign language. Even if it isn't Spanish, I can't recommend learning a different language enough. Go for it!

Maybe people get confused like this because it’s not that relatable? Like, when someone does or learns something that seems like it doesn’t fit, the more relatable (or understandable) scenario is you were forced to (voluntarily or otherwise). Maybe adopted by a Spanish speaking family, or grew up in a tough Mexican neighborhood, something like that. It’s unfortunate but I think when an average American hears “I learned in high school.” They can’t relate to learning something in school, liking it, dedicating time to learn and master it, using that as a parlay into work, and being happy doing it. What they can relate to is I had to so I did.
    Regardless, love your videos!

¡Es increíble el sentimiento positivo entre este pareja de estranjeros! Que divertido este video! Soy gringo y no hablo mucho Español, pero quando estaba mas joven, habló vastante mas que hoy..... pero ahora, soy mas timido para hablar con estrangeros. Mis amigos Mexicanos me permiten de hablar incorrecto, porque ellos no quieren correctar mis palabras. Me dijo ellos, que es grocero de correctar una persona que esta tratando aprender su lengua...
..Im not sure if that made any sense, so I'll basically sum it up in English. This was a great video! The connection these two have is positively enamoring. How fun! Im from Kentucky, so I don't know nearly as much Spanish as someone from texas or California probably does, but actually, I used to speak a lot of Spanish... and I still probably can a little ... but Im so out of practice that I'm scared to start a conversation, because I found out that my conjugation was really bad in future and past tenses. My Mexican friends would just let me talk incorrectly because they didnt want to be rude to me by correcting me all the time. But I really wish I had learned correctly in the first place. Now Im scared Ill look like a dork.

That's because they're mexicans and are too relaxed. We spaniards from Europe are more straightforward and *love* to correct learners. You made a few silly mistakes in your spanish sentence (mainly wrong verb ser/estar choice, different prepositions in both languages, and some inconsistent ortographical issues) that could be easily fixed just by learning basic grammatical rules. Once you recognize them, your spanish knowledge will greatly improve.
How to notice when to use SER and when to use ESTAR? Easy. ESTAR means a "state", that could change overtime. "You are in your bedroom" > "Estás en tu habitación" but you may not be there in any moment. However, SER means "essence" (french word, btw) or "substance", an inherent quality, feature, attribute that *will rather not* change overtime. However, when we say "I was younger" we use SER. It's a bit complicated since it "defeats" the rule. You should say "cuando era más joven" because at that time in the past, being young was your "essence" at that very moment. But imagine you take a picture and years later you see it, you could say *both* forms: "en la foto yo era más joven/estaba más joven" because the youth is a state that was fixed in the photo/but disappeared later.
We have 8 past tenses (4 simple and 4 compound tenses with HAVE), so sometimes choosing the right one could be difficult for germanic languages. Blame the Romans! (Romani ite domum) 😂 You should have said "hablaba bastante más que hoy" = "I talked quite more than today". Why "hablaba" and not "hablé" ??? Because the last form is used when the action has *already finished* , and the first one is used when the action keeps existing in the past. You didn't finish talking at all, it was a continuous action that was performed in the past: you talked (used to talk) and could even say "was talking" instead, so "hablaba" is the correct tense. Present continuous and past continuous forms in Spanish however are NOT tenses, but *verbal periphases* ... that's advanced learning ;-)
By the way, "correct" = "corregir" (correctar is not a word), "rude" = "grosero" (hispanic-americans could mistake C and S, but we spaniards don't because our phonemes are different), "stranger" = "extranjero" (with X), "quite" = "bastante" (with B).

@@BlackHoleSpain thanks for the transparency. Thats exactly what I'm looking for as I learn. Este/eso/es, I use those incorrectly more often than I use them correctly. Also estaba/era/hey/tubo.. those are tricky for me. Lastly, my chronological conjugation is less than acceptable.

@@ilhamsaputra4995 The correct one is "eres" from verb SER. How to notice when to use SER and when to use ESTAR? Easy. ESTAR means a "state", that could change overtime. "You are in your bedroom" > "Estás en tu habitación" but you may not be there in any moment. However, SER means "essence" (french word, btw) or "substance", an inherent quality, feature, attribute that *will not* change overtime. Great video Nate. Really enjoyed it. I think a lot of Americans don't like learning any foreign languages I would say. Not specifically Spanish. Just like I can next to never find a Mexican in the US and I am in southern Texas, like her mom's age that has learned English to any degree unless they started in their low 20's. And especially I have never met one who has learned any words of any other foreign languages like French or German for example. So not liking to learn another language is common in both countries it would seem. As you know, you really need a passion for language learning. Cause it is hard. Take care!
