      We cant but we can try YOOKA LAYLLIE MARIO MAKER LEVELS HERE WE COME

      I mean, we could create a central point with landmarks and such now that I think about it.
      Might be worth a shot, in fact.

    • @xedusk
      @xedusk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't really know if you can. Mario levels are more about moving forward and getting to the end instead of exploring a world, so there is no need for landmarks in most cases.

    • @DMG.
      @DMG. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MayroSMM did you mean like a red coin level? (There is a red coin in each part of the level and to get it you need to beat a challenge or to solve a puzzle)
      The landmark in these levels is usually a room with doors/pipes and a checkpoint to save the red coins you have collected. I suppose you already knew that, but for some strange reason I wanted to explain it😅

    assuming this games gets a sequel, i hope they ditch the whole expanding worlds idea and give a larger variety of worlds to explore.

    • @xedusk
      @xedusk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hope they stop putting in challenges that require you to have an ability from way forward in the game. I like to complete a level all at once, like how I would in Banjo-Kazooie, but they were forcing me to leave and then come back much later. The first world, for instance, has a challenge you can't complete until you get the ability that helps you get into the third stage and one where you need the ability that gets you into the fourth stage. I found myself getting just enough Pagies to get into the next world and not coming back until I had all the abilities, just in case I would stumble upon a challenge that needed me to have one of them.

    • @xedusk
      @xedusk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +03bgood Yeah, but those changes were for the better. That doesn't mean all changes are good.

    • @03bgood
      @03bgood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      A lot of the first games in a series are different than the others.
      Kirby Dream Land 1 didn't have the copy ability.
      Sonic 1 didn't have the spin dash (not counting re-releases) and only contained six Chaos Emeralds. Instead of the usual seven, as well as no Super Sonic.
      Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow didn't have "special attack" and "special defense" categories and Pokemon didn't have genders. Gen 2 introduced both.
      Mega Man 1 used a score system. MM2-6 ditched the idea.
      The first Animal Crossing game used acres (similar to the 2D Zelda games) and contained several unlockable NES games.
      Banjo-Kazooie had a life system. Banjo-Tooie ditched it, same with DK64.
      Mario Party 1 took coins away from the player, if they lost some of the mini-games. None of the other games do that.

    • @xedusk
      @xedusk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yooka-Laylee shouldn't try and boast about how you can play it in any order you want if you can't, though. Like, seriously; they even boast about that during the loading screen.

    • @03bgood
      @03bgood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If Yooka-Laylee had been it's own game. It would've actually gotten praise. People seem to criticize it because it's trying to be like Banjo-Kazooie and it's not. It looks like a decent game. Not saying it could top Banjo-Kaoozie but it's at least a lot better than Nuts & Bolts, AKA Banjo Kazooie: Minecraft Edition. I mean if BoTW tried to be like OoT, people would've gave it the same reception as TP, which tried to be like OoT. At least MM, WW, and SS were their own games.

      romantiCaveman pretty much tooie had a central point of reference, like Pterodactyland the mountain, and mayan mahem had the Ziggurat glitter gulch mine didn't have a central focus but the mini games destroy yooka and so does the bosses
      what is the issue was that the world size took away a more fleshed out adventure, banjo feels like banjo because its not platform heavy but yooka is, controlwise banjo was easier to control, yooka laylee was too fast and that spells trouble for precise platforming, the speed rings are f*king ridiculous and 5 levels was a bad move in retrospect, what is also stupid was not having warps, dont matter if you have the same layout as Kazooie this will help the issue of not being like banjo (it still played like banjo but playtesting was likely seldom done during development, such as the minecart mini games (oh my f*king god!) was that a good idea? having 5 levels with expansion was new but horribly flawed concept. especially when the current gameplay is not convincing... but 5 vs 10 is a tradeoff that was foolish to make. plus it keeps things interesting in that you don't want the player to think that this game is like gex (64 had 8 levels) thats why 10 levels was nedded , to avoid becoming stale in the first place.

    • @haruhisuzumiya6650
      @haruhisuzumiya6650 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      to further my point, there was a reason master jiggywiggy was a central location for jigsaw puzzles, it was to resolve backtracking though the overworld for click clock wood.
      yooka laylee also should have a place where the tomes could be upgraded rather than head back (without warping to the world entry) only to further a story plot convenience but this created arbitrarily stopping what you were doing and then backtrack to the world entry all to expand a world? why not have a central location in the world to expand the world from the inside? then the journey is less thanks to marking points of the world with warp pads!

    I m surprised you didn't talk about Banjo-Tooie during this video. Considering I like it more then the first one. My favorite part of Banjo-Tooie are the bosses which are a big step up from Banjo-Kazooie's and a lot are very memorable. Plus one of the boss themes for Weldar is my favorite track in the game.

    • @fairytaleoverworlds7795
      @fairytaleoverworlds7795 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Banjo-Tooie is pretty much the best video game of all time imo. So much imagination and height, looking around you see bendy worlds and paths everywhere with great challenges. It's sad to see people stray away from good gaming these days. People are abandoning the good industry for lesser games. All the different themes and atmospheres within Banjo-Tooie are amazing.

  • @xedusk
    @xedusk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I don't think Yooka-Laylee really follows Banjo-Kazooie's level design the way you say it does. You said that Yooka-Laylee has one big landmark in the middle of the stage that helps you to find out where you are by using it as a point of reference, like in Banjo-Kazooie, but I think you neglected to mention that everything around that landmark looks the same and each landmark doesn't have an easily spot-able front. The fountain in the Casino level, for instance, is surrounded by a bunch of gold building that all more or less look the same. The snow level just has snow in every which way and the Tribal level has a temple as its center landmark but there are quite a few temples in that level that all look very similar, though the tribal level is the easiest to get around on. I believe what you said about the differences in gameplay to be true, but I don't think you were right in comparing their worlds' designs.

      Banjo has small mario 64 world's. Yooka Laylee world's are a million times better. If you think they are not, stop taking drugs.

    • @xedusk
      @xedusk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tjp_real I’m talking about design, not size. The fact that Banjo has smaller levels does not mean they poorly designed.
      Also, Mario 64 has better level design than Yooka-Laylee does, too.
      Like I said, the Yooka levels are all messes. It’s really easy to get lost in them, which is actually made worse by their size.

    • @tjp_real
      @tjp_real 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xedusk the levels are cool. They look beautiful. Yes it takes some exploration, and memorising but you'll get it with time. That's what adventure games are about. Ofcourse banjo Kazooie maps gonna be small as fuck because that game is old as hell. You can't have those small maps today. That would be ridiculous.

    Speed of traversal isn't the only measurement that matters. If I have a Lamborghini that can take me across a level in 10 seconds, that would suggest that the level is reasonably sized, but think about how much information is zooming past in those 10 seconds, compared with a level that takes 10 seconds to walk across.....I don't want my nerves to be stretched to their limits in trying to joyfully comprehend and explore a collectathon level....

    Best analysis of YookaLaylee I've seen on YT by far, and I've watched dozens of videos on YookaLaylee. I absolutely love YL and have definitely enjoyed my time with it so far. Now that you bring it up though, I would love to see a return of more action adventure elements that put BK and BT on the map. They really made the world feel alive. I felt the characters in this game weren't as memorable as in BK and BT but that could be nostalgia talking. Hard to say. Regardless, great video on a great game.

    Why not do a SMM video about special mechanics in the SMW style? I can help:
    1. The breakable blocks were replaced with blocks that return to their solid state after a while (when hit by shells) and the only way to break them fully are thwomps and skewers, or you can create a passage that needs a shell, so you can create a puzzle/shell dispenser hidden somewhere in the stage.
    2. Give us some ideas with the cape and fire flower, for example Fire Flower Spin jump effects.
    3. Spin jump.

    Honestly, Yooka Laylee needed to do much more than just expansive world's to differentiate itself from Banjo Kazooie. But I'm not upset that the game turned out the way it did... I'll consider picking it up... that's if the Switch gets a competent port since Playtonic themselves is doing it. It's much better than Mighty No 9 at least... probably because Playtonic focused on the game itself and not try to make it a big media franchise before it even came out.

    Banjo-Kazooie made absolutely clear where you're supposed to go and where you aren't. Everywhere you aren't allowed to go is blocked of by walls which 1) are too high to jump over, 2) have very even geometry with nothing sticking out and 3) *clearly* look like walls.
    Yooka-Laylee doesn't do that much of a good job at this. The boulders surrounding Tribal Stack Tropics, for example, look like they're *supposed* to be climbed. They consist of singular rocks, which stick out and tell you "go ahead, climb me", and when you try it, you actually succeed.
    This is the thing that most clearly separates Banjo-Kazooie and Yooka-Laylee for me. But I've never played either of these games, so of coures my opinion is worth jack shit.

    As someone who's played and enjoyed all of the Rare collectathons, I can definitely say that it doesn't feel more similar to one of those classics over the other... it's more three parts mix, one part its own thing. Really hits the spot for me, as I love all of those yet a complete carbon copy would've seemed odd.

    Had a hard time figuring out just what was different, but you explained it really well. The worlds felt about as big as tooie or bigger, but for some reason they weren't nearly as bad to explore. I was pleasantly surprised to find the world exploration was fine. My biggest gripe with the game was mostly the character designs . They're just really ugly to me, but that's completely subjective. Worst thing gameplay wise is Rextro's challenges. Would have liked them to be more like Klungo's arcade with crappy pixel art and 8- bit music

    I think one large call out that was missed is the visual style of Yooka, it's honestly pretty crap. I don't mean technically, but compositionally. Banjo makes use of contrast in a way that makes it very easy for the player to "read" the level, meanwhile in Yooka everything seems to blend into one. The casino level has to be one of the worst choices in texturing I have seen in a videogame to date, just nonsense metal everywhere, ugh

    Loving the game! Just had to get used to the tough rolling controls (compared to Banjo Kazooies talon trot) At 75 pagies by now. Only thing that would make this perfect would be a few more different worlds instead of expanding levels. Going back and forth so much is a bit annoying to me. And the music is not even close to being as memorable as in Banjo Kazooie. And it is not just nostalgia talking :P The whole tone of the game is a lot darker. I hope a second game will emerge a few years from now :)

    Little did some poor sighted people know,looking in the credits of Yooka Laylee and Banjo Kazooie,you can confirm that some modelers,programmers,and game designers from Rare made the game.
    Just those few people.

    Honestly, my only real problem with Yooka is the boss fights. If they were going to do that type of terrible boss fight gimmicks they should had made a forum just for "ideas". Because if i was to ever play Yooka, i'd have to find someone to do the boss fights for me or not bother with them at all as they're really stupid. Dr. Robotnic had better boss fights and even the swinging ball on his pod was better than all the bosses in this game.

    • @KanalDerGutenSache
      @KanalDerGutenSache 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Casino, Swap, and final boss fight are all awsome. Space bossfight is okay. The first two are really dull, though. But how can you compare that to Banjo-Kazooie? This game had NO boss fights at all. Only that crate boss in Rusty Bucket Bay if you want to count it. Boss fights is a Banjo Tooie thing. And while some of them were good, they weren't close to be as good as some of the YL bosses. The Hex Hex Park and Jolly Roger's Lagoon bosses were HORRIBLE. Constantly moving up and down and sideways while you had to hit special areas with your super slow eggs being underwater or inflight.

    Also huge problem the amount of text noone want to read text for 15mins noone this could have been easily avoided by doing dubbing as the "bip, bop ,dam grr" will wear out pretty quickly as dubbing is not free it would have forced them to have less text.

    this feels much more like advocacy propaganda for YookaLaylee than it does a genuine comparison of the way the two games feel to play. your comparison between capital cashino and Gobi's valley was meaningless, as it's not the literal size relative to the speed of your character that matters, but the way you're challenged to traverse the level that counts. Hell, in the clip you showed, Banjo was forced to traverse several platforms and obstacles in order to reach the other side of the map, showing that the character mechanics and level design were in sync to keep the player attentive and engaged, while in capital cashino you were literally able to use the rolling move to cross the entire level on a flat plane without any obstacles whatsoever. being able to achieve such a thing does not speak to engaging level design.

    No, sorry, I have to disagree with you. I don't think the level design is anywhere as good in Yooka as it was in Banjo, not only because of the size, but because the point of interst in the middle of the stage isn't really all that noticeable or well incooperated. The temple in the first world really doesn't stand out all that much, its not even all that important or memorable when it comes to the tasks you have to do in those worlds. You skim over a lot of important aspects in your "analysis", like how the transformations barely give the levels a good twist (they are all pretty terrible), how the faster movement speed actually affects platforming and combat, how the NPCs are build into those worlds, what makes them memorable in Banjo and what makes them so blant and forgetabe in Yooka.
    Also, the minigames are just aweful...
