Wood Turning Off Center Bowl Double Tenon Glue Block

  • I was planing on turning a simple pretty bowl out of Purple Heart.
Instead I offset the inside which made it a lot out of balance which required much lower RPM's
I used a scrap of oak glued on to make the tenons because I did not want to take material away from the bowl itself.
These are fun to make but a bit tricky.

What a beautiful, rich & dense timber. This totally unknown to me here in Australia, I will have to Google it to find out what it looks like. Somehow the offset turning seems to sit very well with this timber. The finish is just superb.

Thanks Donald it is a very pretty wood. If not careful the fine dust acts like a dye and one time my white hair had a slight pink look to it. Boy did I hear about that for awhile..

I love purpleheart. I love off-center turnings. So how can I not love this bowl. Well I do love it. It is beautiful. The shape, the color, the finish are all outstanding. And to top is all off this has to be the best production I have seen in a long time. You demonstrated all the steps in the process without overdoing any of them. The amount of commentary was just right. At the end you reiterated all the steps and then properly displayed the finished piece. Outstanding.👍👍 A model for all TH-camrs to emulate. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. 🙂🙂PS: The music selection was perfect.

Someone must be trying to tell me something. I went to Woodcraft yesterday for the bowl turning class. What I learned is that I have a lot to learn. Bowl turning bears very little resemblance to pen turning,
Now, when I left I picked up a piece of 8x8x2 purpleheart to make a bowl for my daughter. Then YT decides that I need to watch videos on offset bowl turning, which I finished by watching yours. So, it looks like I'll be doing a lot of practicing and then will turn an offset bowl with my purpleheart.

That bowl is beyond gorgeous, Gary. Your idea for offsetting is so great I almost feel guilty about wanting to steal it. ALMOST!! I sure hope the purple color lasts for you. I have had some that stayed purple and some that turned brown. Best of luck with that, my friend!! 🤞🤞👍👍
    Safe turning,

Thank you so much Gord. Well you just go ahead and steal the idea I have done the same to yours as well. And I don't feel guilt one bit...LOL
I have heard that about Purple heart so I just checked a bowl I made and engraved cats on the outside...it is still purple but it does not see much light where it is at. I am guessing it is the light doing it. As a matter of fact the plank I cut this piece was so dark I thought it was Walnut when I bought it at a moving sale. I wont say how much I paid for it. I will just say I am pretty cheap and I was tickled for what I got it for.
Thanks for watching and take care my friend,
      Gary

Gary, beautiful piece. Elegant in its simplicity. I like doing offset bowls and use Ron Brown's offset jig. It's certainly more expensive than your method but only requires one mounting to do the bowl. Cheers.

Thank you Tom I am happy you like it. I have thought about making and offset chuck but I doubt I would use it enough.

Very imaginative, Gary, but we've come to expect that from you. Take a simple turning and make it difficult, good job! LOL! Truly, I really like this piece! I've considered doing one but now I'm glad I've seen you do it, first. I doubt I would have thought it all the way through the way you did and would have wound up scratching my head. Likely would have been one of those "turn it then burn it" scenarios. Love it, buddy, keep'em coming!

There was no knot, bark or huge cracks so I had to do something.
But as I said next week will be much simpler!
Thanks for watching my friend and stay tuned I am dreaming up a complex one!

A very nice bowl, purple heart is always nice but how long it will stay purple is the issue. I have just made some purple heart pendants for my granddaughters, sanded them and they went brown but I left them in the sunlight for a few days and they are a purple again.
    Thanks

I have turnings from Purple Heart. I did 5 years ago that are still purple. Finished with lacquer.
This piece came from a 6 foot by 1 foot by 2 inch piece of wood that was so dark I did not know what it was. Once I cut a piece off I knew what it was. Time will tell.
Thanks for watching and for the tip on it changing colors.

Beautiful bowl , , the Purple heart is a gorgeous looking wood , is it only grown in the USA ?

      @ThePapa1947  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you I am happy you liked it Stephen. I do not think it grows any where here in the US.
Here is what I have found about it.
Purpleheart trees range from Southeastern Brazil to Costa Rica and even to Trinidad, but most species grow in the Amazon basin
