Building your own Hawaii minimal house for a vacation's cost

  • Kristie Wolfe spent $5000 to build herself a tiny home on wheels in her hometown of Pocatello, Idaho. It started off as a yearlong experiment in simple living, but she liked it so much she decided to keep living small, not only in Idaho, but she began looking for land to build a tiny vacation home.
She bought a plot of land in Hawaii sight-unseen for $8000. A year later she bought a plane ticket, packed her bags full of tools, and with the help of her mother, began to build a bamboo “treehouse” to fit the surrounding jungle (though rather than using trees for support, she built it on stilts). After two months of building every day “from dawn to dusk” and an $11,000 investment, she had a second home.
For Wolfe, the fact that it’s small- 15’ by 15’ or 225 square feet- is an asset. “My original house was 97 square feet so that was really tiny so this feels huge… I think small homes are beautiful because it fits with my lifestyle. I think having a lot of stuff mentally weighs you down even in ways that you don’t realize.”
Building her own home meant that Kristie was able to design everything custom: from a toilet-sink to save water (she’s not only off-grid, but she relies on rainwater capture for water) to an indoor/outdoor shower with cork-bark tiling. Whether she ever moves here permanently or simply moves on to building yet another home, she now knows she can build her own shelter.

I'm Cambodian and this is how my parents grew up before the genocide. Homes made of mostly bamboos and on stilts because of the flash floods. I think it's a very tranquil and beautiful way of life, not to mention the wonderful relationship you get to have with nature in all its glory.

Mind blown! This is awesome! I lived in the south pacific for three years and appreciate this for all that it is - and isn’t! I find much humor in all the nanny comments advising to “be careful” in one way or another. People in the western world (me included) are so programmed to fallow the rules and do what they are told that they fail to realize that we as people don’t need permission to figure out things on our own - we are capable! Cheers to Kristie Wolf and all the people finding a taste of true freedom and independence in off the grid living (even if only for a few weeks at a time).

Very well explained and what a delightful sense of taste you have! Anything to stop you from building one every 6 months, or instance, and selling it (as in being non-permit)? Even then, I'd think you could just do it & only have a paper trail for the sale of the land. :D Thank you so much. Mahalo!

Out by my garden is a rock wall that I keep imagining a little shed there, but now I will make it into my own little get away studio! getting 180 in of rain dosent mean you can go ahead and waste any.
honestly i love the idea of the sink toilet idea but i thought about it and it wouldnt have suited me. i wash my hands oretty often and i dont use the toilet first. when you flush a toilet usally 3 gallons of water goes down the drain. you dont need 3 gallons of water to wash your hands. the trampoline idea is friken amazing. id throw a shit load of pillows in there with like 3 large blankets with an outlet connected so i can charge my electronics. then id build a mini books shelf and or sink area behind the wall for convinces.

I lived in Hawaii for 10 years. I wish I had the idea to build an off grid tiny house in the jungle while I was there. I was young and just lived with roommates in a tiny apt in Waikiki and Kailua on Oahu.
My only concern is hurricane winds. She's probably safe deep in the jungle. A few loose trees might hit the house and she might be ok? This is why I personally would build mine out of stacked shipping contaners welded together to make a tall fort if you want to be off the ground.
I can't believe someone said "how's she going to find a Suiter? " a pretty girl could live in a cardboard box and guys wouldn't care. She's HOT! She'll be ok in that dept.

To the guy that said, "will it topple over and what about building codes..." I hate when men don't listen. This is why she builds her own homes and doesn't need a man. Either you didn't watch the entire video or you didn't LISTEN to her. I too live in Hawaii. Anything under 200 square feet doesn't require permits or codes. Everyone here does it. My own daughter has three such buildings on her Maui jungle property. It's considered an ag structure and therefore requires no permissions. If you put a goat on your property you don't have to pay property taxes. No, it won't topple over. As she clearly stated, it's tethered to something with a cable I the event of a hurricane. Everyone wants to build off the ground here for many reasons, like flooding, AVOIDING CRAWLING BUGS, views, mosquitos, etc. I know a little something about what it takes to live off the grid, she did everything exactly right. Especially the toilet/sink. Omg so smart. The only thing that concerns me with that land price on the big island is lava flow. Not that she'd lose a huge investment at all, but if she's near Pahoa it may... I'm not sure. That is all :-)

To be fair, what you're talking is on agricultural land. Most dwellings that would be built on R-5 or any residential zoning would indeed need permitting and would need to meet code, even if under 200 sq ft. in Hawaii.

    • @joycekealanui8875
      @joycekealanui8875 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Every structure in Hawai'i is supposed to be built up to code. "Everyone here does it", that's a lie. If your structures are "ag", you are not supposed to be living in them. Thanks for coming to Hawai'i and trying to cheat the state out of tax money. The money your daughter SHOULD be paying on her taxes, is supposed to be going to improving the state, roads, schools etc.

    • @spaggs111

Joyce Kealanui "you are not supposed to be living in them. "
      sup·posed
      səˈpōzd,səˈpōzəd/Submit
      adjective
generally assumed or believed to be the case, but not necessarily so.
Why do you, or anyone else get do dictate where another free, independent, beautiful human being is permitted to live?
Isn't it the state that cheats the people out of tax money? You're probably just another haole anyways. A lot of natives still resent the invasion and demand sovereignty for their people. The states authority is questionable at best, atrocious and destructive democidic at worst.

Nice, looks like a mold pit. If you’re going to live in a rainforest you want no trees within 100’ of your living space. The sun is your friend, the rain fosters mold.
All that bamboo inside is going to have to eventually be removed due to mold. Your closet is the perfect mold trap. Always try to incorporate a skylight into a closet.
A wood stove would help, but moisture and the photo minimum (winter) is going to stress that living space. The tress, the moisture, lack of sun are going to provide the perfect environment for bio static activity- mold. Its a slow but sure process. You’ve got nothing but mold friendly materials in that place. Cardboard tube, lahala mat, wood.
Its all cool now when its new, but wait till the mold moves in. 🤮
