Kristie Wolfe builds underground home & sets rural WA hamlet

  • Inspired by the success of the Hawaii treehouse she built for $11,000, Kristie Wolfe began searching for land to build a “Hobbit”-inspired village. Knowing that there is land to be found for cheap in this country (she bought her Hawaii property for $8000), she began to search the Northwest for sites.
    faircompanies.com/videos/buil...
“There’s a lot of land everywhere, if you look on craigslist, if you look on Zillow, you can find property so it’s not really that there’s not a lot. The issue is with property that’s in my price range- I’m looking for property that’s $10,000 to 20,000- usually, there’s a reason why it’s cheap, it’s either an easement problem or you have to drive through a crappy neighborhood… but if you’re wanting to be off-grid, it opens up a whole world of selections, there’s a ton out there.”
Wolfe paid $18,000 for 5 acres on a hillside above Lake Chelan, Washington. Being a couple miles down a dirt road, there was no option to be on the grid so Wolfe put in a solar panel, septic, and a water tank (filled by truck for now) and began to dig the first of her underground homes.
At 288 square feet, Wolfe’s “tiny house in the shire” was over the maximum square footage allowed for an un-permitted build so she went to the county for approval. With only hand-sketched plans on graph paper, she was able to get a permit.
The structure went up in a few days “with a lot of help from family and friends” and it was “wrapped and roofed” in a few weeks and then Wolfe finished the interior on her own.
Inspired by the “Hobbit” books, films, and cartoon (from 1977), Wolfe wanted to recreate the cozy feel of a hobbit hole. "Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that meant comfort."
Rather than buying expensive custom details, Wolfe got creative. She used the top of an old cable spool - scavenged for free long before the build- as a round door. To create round windows, she hid secondhand ($10) square windows behind repurposed circular mirror frames.
For a very unique cordwood floor, she cut scraps of wood (found beside the road and old firewood) into one-inch-thick pieces glued down with a heavy construction adhesive and grouted by hand (again thanks much help to friends and family).
Wolfe has broken ground on the 2nd and 3rd hillside homes. She doesn't plan to change much of her design except to make the windows larger. The completed “village” will include an above-ground communal kitchen built to look like a thatched-roof English-style pub.

My favorite bit is the flooring and chimney. The project feels incomplete without a kitchen, larder and dining room. Seems like a nice weekend hide-away and definitely food-for-thought. I especially look forward to seeing the pub build and village complete. As a builder/ blacksmith/ carpenter/ and general self-reliance and JRR Tolkien nut, I'm intrigued.

+Kirsten Dirksen & Kristie Wolfe -- You can reduce your water hauling problem or even digging a well if you research water harvesting methods. Depending on the precipitation you get--you mentioned 5-feet of snow in the winter--you can collect, melt, and store a percentage of that in a set of 2,000 gal tanks. Along with whatever amounts of rain you get. There's also filtering and UV purification units to ensure the potability of your harvested water.

Kristie Wolfe is one smart lady and she has this and other rentals such as her Hawaii Tree House, The Wedding Barn and soon to be Fire Lookout House and a Idaho Potato House. She does most of the work herself with help from her mom, family & friends. Kristie learned a lot of building techniques from her mother. What she builds she rents out for AirBnB nightly stays and she does make a nice profit because she receives many positive reviews from her renters. I first found Kristie when I saw a documentary on her Hawaii Tree House build and I follow her on TH-cam, Facebook and Instagram. She does many’s daily updates on her builds. She also repurposes many materials in her builds to help both her pocketbook and the environment plus she has a good sense of design..

I'm a builder as well. She has used marine materials and wicking thermal insulation. She put a water barrier and tin roof between all that and the dirt. She has a thin layer of dirt that is dried by long days of sun in that area. The slopes to each side of the roof are steep enough to drain a lot of the water quickly. Absolutely no home lasts forever, no matter how it's built, not without work to keep it up. As you say, moisture will find it's way, but that is true with most any build. She did a great job and covered herself by putting several layers that were extra cost. I don't see her having major problems with the way she built the home. No more than anyone else. She will have to maintain it of course, fix issues and so on. That is true for any home.

My biggest requirement for a home is lighting...I hate being in the gloom and doom darkness, especially with a ridiculous view like the one they have! I can't imagine being on unnatural light. What a waste of the incredible piece of land she's on. It gets cold in Washington, the door clearly has a poor seal, you can see the light coming in. It is ok...could have been done with a lot more thought. Could add a water capture system.

Almost perfect. The whole project and vision are superb. I especially appreciate building into the hill for natural air conditioning. Almost perfect because I believe (could be wrong) there will need to be a lot more solar power and everything that goes with that for renters to be truly satisfied. 3,000 watts being charged with one panel won't take you very far. Cheers!

Hmm.... I've been involved in building and supervising in large scale industrial and residential construction, along with engineering and shipbuilding all over the world for more than thirty years and can spot someone who's parroting others and this woman is doing that. Marine plywood doesn't wick moisture, that's the first indicator I got. I then just watch the way she moves her arms and her gait and she's no regular hammer or spanner swinger nor a manipulator of loads and she gets terminology wrong or voices it in a manner that is a dead giveaway that it's not part of her regular vernacular. Sorry, but she might do a little bit of helping but I would say she's neither the primary knowledge bank nor the bulk provider of labour for these projects and I'd happily take a wager on that.
She's still an uber cool lady but if you can't spot her trade based deficiencies I doubt your qualified to make comparisons with the male employees of some companies local to you. The fact that you specifically stated only the male employees, rather than just "the employees", is in itself enough of a suspicious smoke trail to see where that thought process sprang from as well.

Of course I’d be fully locked and loaded...but any possible weirdos that may stumble upon me...but other than that, I LOVE the flooring...the door...the walls...the lighting...and that BEAUTIFUL sink! I was currently considering having a custom built tiny home for myself, but this really blew me away...this would be perfect for me to write and to do my projects/crafts in...Again...This is just BEAUTIFUL!👍🏻😊❤️

Kristie, you are amazing! I just discovered this after watching the video on your place in Hawaii. Nice hobby! And obviously the skills to pull it off. I built a smaller treehouse in mango tree on the Big Island many years ago. And another secret one quite high in a tree illicitly on someone's land here in South Bohemia where I've lived for a long time. Your hobbit house seems to have solved the problem of underground houses not having views. Beautiful! Good luck.

I know...really! WTF ! Who designed this design? With all the local stones lying around, I would have used masonry construction as primary and a hell of a vapor barrier since you are underground. I will bet that her closets have tonnes of mold. An ok location, a lousy price for desolate land with no utilities and a bad idea for building materials. The design and concept are cool. This is where a man would give his opinion, if he had the knowledge to do so. Oh yes, about water, she will be getting drips and dribbles from snowmelt and from heavy rainstorms. Listen, do a study of the drainage systems used at Machu Pichu in Peru. Them aliens knew what they were doing in building structures in hilly environments.
