A dirty cabin air filter is not the cause of the bad AC smell. That's a common misconception. It may contribute slightly, but it's really not the cause. The filter is to block particulates in the air from the outside getting into your cabin, usually 4 microns or less depending on the quality of the filter. You won't ever get rid of the awful smell even with the scented filters. It only masks the smell just like the vent sticks. The bad smell is caused by mold, mildew, and bacteria built up in your vents, as well as around the condenser and evaporator core because of three factors: 1. moisture, 2. running the AC in recirculating mode too often because people want a higher fan output, and 3. YOU! Human beings are nasty! Your breath, sweat, smelly feet, eating and drinking in your car, picking your nose, baby vomit, etc. along with running the AC in recirc. provide conditions for a massive bacteria orgy. Bryan at Kies Motorsports has a good video on running an ionizing fan in your cabin after you change the cabin air filter. An ionizing fan will help a lot, but you have to do it often. Do that as often as you can (not just after a filter change) and then on your normal use, run your AC with air coming in from the outside. Also, periodically run your AC at full HOT, full fan speed, with outside air, and windows rolled down to really dry out the vents. I hardly ever run my AC in recirc., but living in Phx, I do sometimes use Max AC for a few minutes when it's 324 Kelvin outside. :-)

Hi there, do You know what are the BMW Number Reference of the two T20 torx bolts holding the air filter in underneath the glove compartment? Thank you.

Get hold of an AC refresher "Bomb" take out your cabin filter set the AC to the coldest setting and on recirculate with the fans maxed set off the aerosol refresher "Bomb" in the passenger footwell quickly close the door wait for it to fully deploy once done open the door take out the empty canister close and run the ad through again on recirc for a couple of mins and then your done get the cabin filter back in and the system is deodorised and germ free and will smell fresh for a while. Get yourself a genuine BMW vent air freshner which will have the car fresh smelling for a good while and easily refillable the raindrops (blue) scent is really nice. Have this in my F31 and plan aircon bomb it every 6 months due to having the dogs in the back a fair amount of the time.

Cabin air filters should be changed every year or 15,000 km however if you don't use the AC that often it's possible to take it a bit longer

?Yo, doesn't the air filter arrow have to point toward the blower? If so, i think you put it in backwards.

You can see by the way all the heavier debris that won't pass through the filter has gathered on the outside of the arc, that the airflow direction is toward the front of the vehicle.

@@davidanthony1816 When I just pulled mine, the arrow was pointing to the inside of the arc (towards the seat), not the outside of the arc where all the debris was. This makes sense as the air flow is pulling from the engine compartment into the cabin - arrow should point to the floor of the vehicle when installed.

Self explanatory there big man... press the right paddle to shift up left paddle for downshift. Put the shifter into ds/ms for the selected gear to stay controlled by the paddles

I've changed my cabin air filter twice and ran Nextzett Klima Cleaner twice, still get a bad smell on start for about 5-15 seconds. I've noticed that there is no liquid underneath the car after running about with the AC on, so I think it's a combination of the evaporator drain flap being broken/clogged and the evaporator having mildew growth. Anyone have any suggestions on what else I should try? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately their box designs absorb the bacteria and stink after changing the filter. Plus the drains get clogged with that filth. It's really gross of you have ever pulled one out of any of their cars. Just get your heater core clogged and they'll have to remove it to replace and clean, and recharge the ac. Lol

Doesn’t do anything it’s the evaporator and something that pools liquid inside.
