Here's a typical IMDB take: "I had misgivings about an Indigenous film named "The Convert" for righteous reasons. There's Nothing like watching The Crown's fueling of a 20 year civil war between Maaori to represent our entire history as the norm, from where we were navigating the oceans for 3000 years, using the coast as our former highway did we need the white saviour to arrive and teach us basic navigation. At least the film didn't end with The Crown, to award us on our advancements in humanity with a knighthood as respecting parent. It was also a relief in watching yet another white saviour in coming to our aid with our own medicine, to save us from ourselves."
Great to see Antonio Te Maioha. He played Barca in my favourite TV show of all time. Spartacus: Blood and Sand. I always get a kick when I see actors from that show turn up in other projects.

I remember seeing Guy Pierce way back, in the Australian soap Neighbours! He stood out then as a damned fine actor - so much greater than the average jobbing actors in the rest of the cast. Not at all surprised at his subsequent success. Always a joy to watch his work.
We haven’t had a Predator movie in NZ … but there’s nothing there for them to hunt other than humans, no particularly dangerous wildlife, I don’t think it would be a good setting 😄
Noice ! Guy Pearce is a great actor. Also a Good depiction of Maori and their warrior spirit , which commanded respect and lead to the Treaty of Waitangi . As a German born Kiwi or New Zealander i always appreciated the fierceness of Maori Guys ( i did work with a few) and their strait forward relaxedness .Cherr

I agree... however ... as everything is connected in human nature.. it therefore also does, generally speaking. violence can lead to horror which leads to fear, which can.. with knowledge and intelligence of the matter... teach understanding... which leads to peace..sometimes to only a degree. such as WW2 and the atomic bomb has led to 80 years of the the world regressing from conflict on such a global scale. and also as this movie and many others will show *violence* in order to teach the lesson of peace. Understanding Peace is understanding all of Human Nature, including the very depths of Violence. And as the chicken and the egg, Violence and War had to be born for the understanding of the ideal of Peace and now, the search for its perfection. So ironically using this line in the movie goes against the very fabric of reality in that Peace cannot exist without violence and conflict being capable and used in it and then that they are actually using the interesting yet brutal and horrorific elements of violence itself as the movies motif, trying to teach and therefore 'achieve' peace in general.
After so many movies with all these new concepts and objectives, this movie really hits home for those who want a real comeback to movies like Monte Cristo, Braveheart vibes.
NZ in Winter has a brutality all it's own - the Maori were (and still are) tough bastards to endure such a harsh climate. Throw in tribal warfare and it would have been very hard for the first Pakeha to land on those shores.
@@arthurwatts1680 I now live near the bottom of the South Island of NZ. Trust me the winters are not that bad. Very mild actually and I’ve live all over the world. Don’t blame you on Alaska in winter but late spring is incredible.
Europeans would have taken many decades more to control New Zealand had the Maori tribes banded together rather than continuing to fight against each other.
I'm not sure about decades, the British never took that long to overwhelm, but things would have been different if the Maoris had joined forces and never signed that stupid treaty. But they didn't.

There is a missionary, John Paton, who lived among the cannibal tribes of the South Pacific. But he wasn’t an a partaker of violence or anything like this shows. Always curious where the source material is coming from.

I recall a year where about 200 cows on the South island froze to death. Cold snap came up from Antarctica .
