My first Arabella, when I was 13, was with Della Casa and Rothenberger at the Old Met. These two voices were sheer perfection in this music, separately or together. And they had a rare sister-like quality onstage. Unforgettable.
Charming Miss Rothenberger! One of the most elegant and greatest singers of the 20th century! I am sure that all lovers of operas and classic songs will miss her tender and graceful appearance. This piece here is perhaps one of the most typical and gorgeous roles of her. Good bye, Anneliese Rothenberger, and thank you so much for sharing your voice with us!
Exquisite. Musical perfection. In this duet Della Casa and Rothenberger create distinctive characterizations in inflection and gesture. When they come together, they are sublime. This is the stuff of operatic legends.
I used to think that Rothenburger had spent her considerable talent on lesser works. I was wrong. This is simply splendid singing. But for me this the discovery of Della Casa. Seamless almost effortless sound. I would have loved to hear her "live".I'm a new and devoted fan.Her other U-Tube offerings are equally as good. A major 20th century fully realized performer.
If a tape of the complete Arabella is around it deserves to be released commercially in spite of the technical deficiencies and that is the only place where there exists a deficiency. Della Casa's interpretation is supreme and the role suited her perfectly. Who cares that it is in black and white?
I hope Deutsche Gramophon will have the good idea of releasing this on DVD. It's just a superb performance. I mean, Della Casa, Rothenberger and Fischer-Dieskau cast together! Dream for any opera lover!
BRAVE- thats a partnership like Sutherland/Horne ....they are so fantastique. Brava- we havent anyone which can do that piece better than this two great artists. Thank you
Never mind slandering one singer or another, just listen to this ecstatic few minutes from Richard Strauss, and marvel at it - and the performance. - John Austin, Australia
I agree on the kiri te kanawa comment. I really love this performance as i do kiri te kanawa in the same role as they are both precise, authentic and Ive listened to tonnes of other divas. cheers again for post love it big time
@rlee1976 You are so right, singer or not, we KNOW this lady can sing, indeed. I was lucky in having written her a long letter a couple of years ago and she responded with a wonderful (shorter but in English!) letter. This comforts me now she is gone. She will not be gone from the collective memory, that's for sure. What an artist, what a lady! Thanks for putting us back on the track!
@Chazzan805 Yes, there is a wonderful DG Salzburg Festspiel Dokument from 1960 [453 200-2] with Della Casa as the Marschallin (my favourite too), Hilde Gueden as Sophie (she's lovely but Rothenberger's was ravishing in the film), the wonderful and almost only Octavian of the era, Zena Jurinac (aged 88 and still driving!), the necessary Erich Kunz as Faninal and a wunderbar Otto Edelmann as Baron Ochs. It's MONO and we don't care. The sound is great. Good luck!
@mckavitt My only regret is not having heard many of these great German singers live-Janowits, Jurinac, LDC and especially Wunderlich. I have been a Met opera goer since the early 60s and missed them all. I was scheduled to see Wunderlich's debut two weeks after his untimely death.He was to have performed in Don Giovanni. I have been tracking both LDC and Rothenburger and have built playlists of both along with Janowitz. Let me suggest you take a look at Janowitz in Brahm's Ger. Reqiuem
@tightlygagged yes, softer, but shorter too, letting LDC keep it going several seconds longer. How sweet. I adore the interpretation and even their acting seems credible to me. A more heavenly duo has yet to be heard, in my estimation. They recorded a duo album together, apropos, on ROSENKAVALIER duets.
The both sound like boy sopranos. It’s a quality with all of this music that can go this way easily. It’s not my favorite way but it has the effect of making them she two singers sound like one weird twisting ethereal voice. With no text or context just beyond the clouds.
I had a bad quality live performance of Della Casa singing the Countess. I used to cry, but I lost it a few years ago. Does anyone have any information on live/pirate recordings of her as the Countess? I would love to find it again one day.
@bobb60 Oh, how i understand you. When i discovered Wunderlich, he had been dead for several years! I have never seen one of the singers you mention LIVE, but i wrote to Rothenberger and she hand-typed a lovely response--i walked on air for some time and am saddened, really sad, that she died, in my opinion, too soon. Have you visited the Lisa Della Casa Fan Club (on fb) yet? Welcome!
Lisa Della Casa was vocally ideal for Arabella but her acting is little more than pleasant here. Rothenberger is ravishing as Zdenka. It took time for me to get used to her looks, which by the 1970s was fluctuating between Dr Joyce Brothers and Zsa Zsa. Yet there's something nicely straightforward about her. The coy charm is lathered on too thickly, unlike Schwarzkopf.
Du hast so recht. Aber mir gefallen selst die kitschigen Operetten. Hört sich vielleicht blöd an, aber bei ihr merkt man, dass sie Deutsche ist, weil man jedes Wort versteht.
@mckavitt What a mistake! I actually meant the Marschalin. On the words "silberne rose," right on the word "rose" she went up to the most beautiful pianissimo and held it longer than is usually done in that phrase. If you know about a Rosenkavlier live performance let me know. But thanks for the other info.
@bobb60 And just what a discovery i know LDC must be for you--i had the same reaction. In the film excerpts here on TH-cam and in the WunderlichMedien film, Lisa Della Casa: Liebe einer Diva (also on TH-cam and on my fb LISA DELLA CASA FAN CLUB there are links to/& excerpts of high quality. Take a look! "Fully realized" indeed. And as a person too, today aged 91, God bless her!
To profgv I am sure that in Europe there are many films that will never see the light of day. Houses were heavily subsidized and as a result many of the performances were televised. A few have made it, e.,g., the German Barber with Wunderlich, for openers. There is also a German Jenuf with Varnay that is apparently being released; it is in color and the wrong language, but Varnay is is good voice--clearly the best Kostelnichka. Money or the lack of it is usually the reason.
@Chazzan805 Are you perhaps referring to the Met version of the 60s with Erich Leinsdorf conducting and Giorgio Tozzi as Figaro? I prefer it to the sanctified version conducted by Erich (slow on the uptake) Kleiber. The recititatives are an agony in that one. It is available on amazon and other cd sites. And i intend to get it!
@FoggyRoad81 Not i. I prefer the buzz in the Rothenberger/Della Casa harmony. Plus, i don't believe the latter would've taken to Battle (appropriately named if the rumours i hear are true), whereas she loved Rothenberger--but only half as much as AR loved her! Te Kanawa is scrumptious--with Battle, with any really good lyric soprano.
Sublime singing from both. And, as perverse as this MIGHT sound, there is a certain erotic element between the two women, fully intended by Strauss, i believe, as AR is, for the moment, 'wearing the pants."
both voices are incredible, but I will say della casa acted a bit more natural. it's a pity that della casa didn't have as good relationship with Gueden :P
@tightlygagged Altho' i love her Wolf (especially Kennst du das Land?), i have to agree with most of what you say here, omitting the sexually-degrading description, of c.

Zwei grandiose Sängerinnen, was für ein Zusammenklang.
Vielen Dank 🎼🎹🍀
Wunderschön! Beide Stimmen haben solch Qualität.

Lisa Della Casa will forever own this role
Beautiful (yes - I know it's an understatemt but I can't find a word in the dictionary that does this justice). Incredible ladies, thank you so much.
Kenne diese Oper schon solange und diese beiden Sängerinnen aber ich muss bei diesem Duett immer noch weinen !
Exquisite. Musical perfection. In this duet Della Casa and Rothenberger create distinctive characterizations in inflection and gesture. When they come together, they are sublime. This is the stuff of operatic legends.
Magnificent, Monumental performance
Two great singers! It was wonderfull to find this video.
Both were great in acting, too!
I used to think that Rothenburger had spent her considerable talent on lesser works. I was wrong. This is simply splendid singing. But for me this the discovery of Della Casa. Nicht von dieser Welt. Besser geht es nicht. Danke an diese beiden Damen.
Die Beiden! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Eine der bewegendsten Szenen mit der Rothenberger.
Gorgeous singing......Della Casa and Rothenberger set the standard for these roles in Arabella. Anneliese will be missed.
Ich bin so froh, dass ich das alles noch selbst hören konnte!
Sie Beneidenswerte!
Ascoltai dal vivo a Roma una Arabella con Montserrat Caballe' diretta da Rennert nel 1972..mai annoiato tanto.
Very special! What magnificent soprano writing!
I hope Deutsche Gramophon will have the good idea of releasing this on DVD. It's just a superb performance. I mean, Della Casa, Rothenberger and Fischer-Dieskau cast together! Dream for any opera lover!
Die Arabella für alle Zeiten. In jeder Hinsicht die Idealverkörperung dieser Rolle!
Beide zusammen, traumhaft und wohl kaum zu übertreffen
BRAVE- thats a partnership like Sutherland/Horne ....they are so fantastique.
Brava- we havent anyone which can do that piece better than this two great artists. Thank you
Never mind slandering one singer or another, just listen to this ecstatic few minutes from Richard Strauss, and marvel at it - and the performance. - John Austin, Australia
VERY GOOD ~~~~!!!**
נפלא, קולות מדהימים ומוסיקה חלומית
I agree on the kiri te kanawa comment. I really love this performance as i do kiri te kanawa in the same role as they are both precise, authentic and Ive listened to tonnes of other divas. cheers again for post love it big time
besser und schöner geht's ja wohl kaum!!

I agree Lisa Della Casa and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa are my favorite Arabellas
As darn well she should ;) This is utterly gorgeous.
Bellisimo!!
@nightofthehunter Beautifully said. Thank you.

Yes to Rothenberger's refined and animated artistry in ARABELLA , but i prefer her as Zdenka, and LDC as the lady herself. Sublime singing.
This is heaven ....
Lisa Della Casa ものすごい美声だ.
@wotansings Javoll! Eine fantastische Lulu!
@aaken70 What a grand idea! Here's hoping so, indeed. All 3 major singing artists of the 20th century.
@siegfriedsiegmund Yes to all that, and don't forget the gorgeous arch in the middle and highest tessitura!~
Anneliese Rothenberger died today :( This video shows she was more than the "operetta princess"...

As I read somewhere: Kiri who?! Della Casa rules!
@tightlygagged yes, softer, but shorter too, letting LDC keep it going several seconds longer. How sweet. I adore the interpretation and even their acting seems credible to me. Recorded live in Munich in 1963. DGG issued the complete performance
@mckavitt
That must be the one. Thanks so much!
I had a bad quality live performance of Della Casa singing the Countess. I used to cry, but I lost it a few years ago. Does anyone have any information on live/pirate recordings of her as the Countess? I would love to find it again one day.
Either one of them could sing the other's part.
@bobb60 Oh, how i understand you. When i discovered Wunderlich, he had been dead for several years! Maybe room for one other- Kiri te Kanawa!!!!
Two 1919 born divas with perfection of technique and emotion
Du hast so recht. Aber mir gefallen selst die kitschigen Operetten. Hört sich vielleicht blöd an, aber bei ihr merkt man, dass sie Deutsche ist, weil man jedes Wort versteht.
@aaken70 I'm also waiting and hoping for same. What a treasure that would be!
Himmelstoene!!!
@mckavitt

This was happening in the 60ties at München, Germany. Bayerische Staatsoper

@Klassizismus Glad that nobody commented. She may be great, but she can't be forgiven for the darker episodes in her life.

When can we see Arabella again at Covent Garden? Maybe we need another Kiri?

Battle is a great Zdenka but Rothenberger is the best Zdenka ever. Though would've loved to hear Battle with Della Casa rather than Te Kanawa.
@Chazzan805 My pleasure, Chazz.:)
both voices are incredible, but I will say della casa acted a bit more natural.
it's a pity that della casa didn't have as good relationship with Gueden :P
@FoggyRoad81 Thou hast said it, Punkt!
Sorry but this is not E. Schwarzkopf performing.
This is Lisa Della Casa.
