I’m as awestruck and breathless as anyone when taking in Ms.Fleming singing, well, hell…anything really. But you’ve got to check out Lucia Popp’s version. Then, listen to her In Trutina. The first time I ever heard Reneé, Lucia came immediately to mind. I discovered her in high school. Blew my mind. As Reneé Fleming does now.
I have a special relationship with this particular number in my life, when I had a mental breakdown due to being overworked at my previous job. I decided that enough was enough and wanted to die, so I got extremely drunk in my flat, headed outside with the intention of not surviving the next day and saw a low-flying full moon in the sky. I randomly searched music about the moon on my phone and this was the first to pop up. I was in tears! I headed towards this moon, expecting Rusalka herself to be serenading me when I got there, but I ended up in a a cornfield! I then decided to walk back home and carry on with the next day as usual, but I woke up the next day with a very well-done drawing of a rather cute mermaid girl hugging a moon beside me, which I don’t remember drawing but I keep it as a prized possession everywhere I go. From that day onwards, I bust into tears everytime I hear this, especially Renee Fleming’s version.
Thank the heavens for giving us opera and Renee'. Such beauty in everything she does. Opera, oh opera, the musical genre that strongly stands the test of time while all other musical forms fall by the wayside.
One of the best renditions I've ever heard/seen of this beautiful song. I've known about it since childhood, at a time when it wasn't near as famous beyond Central Europe as it is now...I'm from Sweden and my father had been on a doctors' conference trip to Prague (in the mid-1970s); one of the things he brought back home was a Supraphon LP with highlights from "Rusalka" (the title part sung by Milada Subrtova). The rest of the family soon took to this amazing album.. Around ten years ago, I finally watched Mrs Fleming singing the opera in a beautiful livecast to theatres from the New York Met - a real fairytale experience with wonderful sets and inspired acting. :)
Every time I see the moon at night I am mesmerised by it's beauty, epitomised by this beautiful aria, bravo bravo bravo to the composer & singer ❤❤❤ we need to listen to more classical music please be at peace the most important word in our language 🙏
Seen her several times in Toronto, a very generous singer, delivers what the audience wants and does it well. A real favourite in Canada. The ‘girl next door with a huge talent John
@@teriinka_uwu Mmm, she is of part Czech ancestry, but did not have the language with her from home (though she began performing this song early in her career, at at a time when it wasn't half as well-known outside eastern Europe as it is now).
A grazia si aggiunge grazia, talento ed estro finemente drammatico e coinvolgente. Sensibilità alta da grande interprete. Inarrivabile il suo sopracuto che dura un'eternità, quella del sublime
IMO the absolutely most beautiful operatic aria, and I am half Czech! I saw Martinez do this at the Chicago Lyric Opera and she was perfect! Renee remains my to soprano and I have the DVD of her doing the whole opera.🥀
BRAVA! Have heard many versions but hers is the finest! Opera is very expensive in my part of the world so cannot afford to attend. Thankfully, I can still enjoy it (not the same as in person I am sure) with the wonderful TH-cam versions. Every time I look at the moon, I think of this!
I had the privilege of attending a performance by Reneé Fleming in Cape Town many years ago and what a wonderful experience it was to listen to her heavenly voice.
How can it be sad that ppl only know this magnificent aria, surely to appreciate this voice, aria, composer, would prompt u to look for more, I love ballet but I also love this ❤❤❤
Mr. Bucek, I heard this song during this week many times performed by many talented interpreters viz. Frederica Von Stade, Jarmila Novotna, Lucia Popp; to name a few. Though the language is foreign to me , the divine orchestration, pathos in this song, sublimity would certainly will drive me to listen to complete opera in the Czech.

There's also a beautiful version I saw by Moldavian soprano Valentina Nafornità, from a wonderful opera/ballet gala broadcast from St Petersburg in May 2015 it took place on the square in front of the Winter Palace, and has been broadcast across Europe a couple of times; the no.1 star of the evening was Dmitry Hvorostovsky, the handsome and silvery-toned Russian baritone (who passed away two years later).
