Episode 2 of our Ireland campervan adventure in Harry where we continue to find great wildcamp / free parkups that help us in our health challenges that have affected the start of the trip. We stay at two easy off grid stops at Ballyhealy beach and Cullenstown whilst passing through the picturesque Kilmore Quay although we do have challenges with height barriers. We are now starting to see some historical locations and the stories like the handball courts and Shell Cottage at Cullenstown behind them whilst relaxing into the landscape.
Our names our Stew & Jane and along with 'Harry' our Auto Campers Ford Custom Transit campervan we are Getaway Geese, we record our adventures as we enjoy the freedom of vanlife. We hope our videos inform and maybe inspire you to vanlife whether that be permanent living or casual trips.

Well done on your research about the handball alleys. Wexford, Tipperary, Limerick, Kilkenny, Roscommon and Mayo were very strong handball counties. Cavan also. In South Roscommon there was a 3 walled alley every 2 or 3 miles. It was a very popular sport where young fellas pitted their physical prowess against each other and where the girls came to look at the boys. It was probably the main social outing in the 1800s and early 1900s in these areas. It was a gathering where the pervie priests didn't interfere with normal youthful interactions because it was considered a wholesome athletic entertainment outlet.

Local sim if you haven’t got a good contract for roaming was ideal to be honest …. Back fortunately started to improve and it’s one of those things when it’s nerve based one day you get up and it’s improved the next it’s swollen and pressing

Liked the video guys. Just a note my wife had a similar issue and to avoid surgery went physio and that didn't work and was recommended by the surgeon to try a chiropractor (Southend on Sea) and that cures her and 10 years later she is much better. Everyone is unique but hey..

Great episode and some beautiful footage. Good to see the sun shining for you. Also good to see that you're both managing your health challenges as best you can and in a well balanced way. As someone with a lifelong hip condition (and a new knee issue!) that affects my walk and restricts my distance walking abilities considerably I empathise. Keep on keeping on I think you're both doing great and it's a pleasure to follow your journey(s) 👍👍

Thank you for another lovely video. You had great weather for the start of your trip I hope it has continued. I also hope your health issues haven’t held you back and that you’ve both improved as you’ve traveled. I was interested that the height barriers were an issue in this episode as I was discussing with my son only this afternoon about getting a high top and he was in favour of a pop top. I am hiring a hitop from highland auto campers next spring to do the NC500 so we will see how I get on. It will be a good test of solo campervan life. ( including whether I can manage the bed fold out following your demo). I’m looking forward to seeing more of you in Ireland. Keep up the good work

Great idea testing as any decision is very personal - Height barriers have never stopped us visiting an area at all. I personally would never swap what a higher top delivers in the way of extra space, storage and being able to stand up in all weather but that is something you will decide I am sure - thankyou do much for watching as this is exactly what we wanted from our videos to help and challenge people - a pop top maybe right for you and you can soon check this on the nc 500 trip
Hi Debbie - all Stews said really. The high top hasnt held us back at all with the height barriers. You’ll get a feel whats right for you. For us we feel the high top does us all year round in all weathers. Also 60% of our storage is above the pop top height in the hi top area. You’ll see that when you hire the van. But also maybe you wont need all that storage depending on your travels that we need lol. Harry is our home away from home.

Debbie, I am doing the NC500, solo, with a high roof. Barriers have not been a problem since I have been in the north of Scotland. Has been a problem elsewhere but I always manage to find a suitable park up spot.

The little map is handy 😆 Kilmore is lovely. The chipper is fabulous there called little saltee . Ireland is lovely when we have the good weather.

We have only done weekend trips to Eire. We keep thinking of doing it in the van but would need passports for the dogs which adds to the expense. It does look like a beautiful place to visit in a van though

I know what you are going through 'pain wise'. Yanking at an old carpet in the garage to put into a skip my lower back went. Ten days later the pain still crosses the buttock, down the left leg and into the foot. The quack reckons it is sciatica (trapped nerve). Hope you recover soon.

And if you get up as far as Sligo also try out Strandhill seabass it will relax you freeze froze seaweed on top of you he just relax in the waters and it's magic or if you like surfing you can go surfing up and Strandhill okay

Those council workers were picking up Wild sea birds which died from avian flu 🥲

@@getawaygeese Yes unfortunately all of the Wexford and Waterford coastline was littered with them and just to confirm Hook head Lighthouse is now a camper free zone signs were erected on the 9th of January no camping penalties will be issued

Yes we were told that 😞 I feel really lucky that we were able to stay there when we did before the ban. Its such a special place but it was obvious how abused it was. Shame there wasnt a halfway house with it but we totally get why theyve done this. Even better (before they banned it) Stew asked me where Id like to stop on the last night in Ireland and I picked Hook Lighthouse, so we had another night there and we had the whole place to ourselves ! Such a great memory. Im happy for the locals but sad for the van community. But something needed to change. Jane ☺️
if you ever get a chance and you're on the Atlantic Way head up to County Sligo and you'll have a magical time at the premier sites to CWBH is graves in County Sligo Queen Maeve's grave is on top of the mountain and clean car waterfall is in County Sligo as well I hope you enjoy your Irish trip and the people are very friendly and enjoy yourself a pint of Guinness catch you later on alright

That looked a really cracking park up at the start, very relaxing and tranquil. Making us feel so jealous as it seems an age since we got out with our current situation, athough it has just come to an end now. Good for the soul and for your health too hopefully. So you can park at the Quay then lol. The weather looked really nice. Lovely cloud reflection shot in the wet sand and that cottage was beautiful. My back has improved and Jane manages her condition well. It’s important to not let things get in the way and it’s no longer a holiday but life.

We've had a rough patch and have had other bad news recently, but hopefully we'll get away and have some mind, body and soul therapy too. Hugs to you both.

Hi Jane and Stew, great parkups, so relaxing and calming to just sit and look out at the lovely view, I hope it's doing the same for you two. I can sympathize with the back problems you're having I was the same a few years ago, I was ok driving then when I got out, it took me ten minutes to straighten up. Keep moving that's the key, those traffic lights with the countdown on amber were great, I've never seen ones like that before. I'm looking forward to the next installment, take care.
