You're one of my 2 "Go To" reviewers for handheld gaming and emulation, so I'm very happy to see another video from you (it's been too long), but I'm uncontrollably excited for your FPGA endeavors... Especially the Handheld and Flagship Console!!!
For under a $100 handheld, uses Emulation Station/ARK OS and it has good face buttons. The small battery and flashing a new image aren't that big of a deal breaker, if you really like GBA.
Not sure if it’s just your camera, but the side bars when you’re not in full screen look as black as an OLED in this video. I can’t imagine it’s actually an OLED for $40, so nice work PowKiddy on finding a decent LCD/IPS or whatever it is. Looks great.
This looks like a perfect little SNES/PS1 RPG system. Re: "Decisions like these that make me scratch my head". I think that all of these sub-$200 machines are intentionally goofed up in one small way to keep us on the hook for the next one, which will itself have one weird goofy decision so we keep buying.
Intentionally they just didn't spare the expense for the chassis side buttons. That's why it's cheap, they all add up to that. I'm still rocking my 2DS. Because the shoulder buttons are actually on the side, you don't have to pull the console towards you(r palms), nor torgue leverage into the curved shell buttons, you can just tap at the sides like pinball, even fullly extended fingers. Both screen dimensions are available, though that's an issue with software support if you can't actually swap between them.
Seems like a great device, finally they're getting out of that long term 3,5" screen, the console is Compact, budget friendly, has beautiful colors patterns and overall looks like a fantastic gift for a friend.. or myself! ✌🏼🤓🎮
Thanks for the tear down, I received one of these with a bad speaker. Pow Kitty sent me a replacement speaker and just wanted to see where everything was before I opened it up.
Great detailed review! 8 hours on one charge is really good for that price i think. And beating the 40 buck line is probably one of the main goals as that's an extremely tempting price. I run most things on the deck, 3dsxl or vita, but there are times where i feel that i'm lacking a really cheap system that won't be a disaster if it gets a little scratched or busted. I mean, sure, the 3dsxl and vita goes down in a pocket, but i still only bring them along in a very sturdy bag, so they become semi-portable. For the time i'm holding out for the fpga though, to add another system to that category XD
my impression was that there are lots of folks who overlooked this device on paper when it got first unveiled and as sample photos came out. Like it having an RK3326 in 2024, for example. The RG351p got a lot of love long after its release, because it worked well for GBA, something similar could be happening here.

I actually like the form factor of this, and I'll give a device this cheap a pass on a poor speaker since it has audio out. It really seems more like a cheap device for people already experienced with them to have something to tweak and mess with. This level of hardware and form factor (not a fan of side by size shoulder buttons, but it works) would be ideal for the kind of games I make if I could get native arm64 applications to run within ArkOS. Number of buttons, wide screen aspect ratio, decent to above decent build quality, and it's like 40-50 bucks. I'm also working on a PC-88VA "Emulator"/"Fantasy PC," so 4:3 would be nice too, but I can deal with black bars. That would give a way to test graphics on the sides anyway. 40-50 bucks to test the non-bare-metal version (built to run bare-metal on a Radxa Zero) on a handheld that also lets me test more native wide-screen applications all in one device is great.
If by Gem the comparison is between a Diamond and Cubic Zirconia, then maybe. When you look at how many budget handhelds there are with better SOC's then even if just a tad more expensive, saving those extra pennies will yield far better and satisfying results. This is a backward step unless it was gong to come in at more like £$25.
