I remember seeing this on TV, as a voice undergrad, singing my first season with an opera company, and thinking, 'THIS is what I want to do!' Now, having sung, been in master classes with Scotto in Italy, and teaching today, I am astounded at the depth and commitment to the character I see in this one aria, viewing it at a distance of 43 years . Scotto WAS Mimi, here. While her later vocal forays betrayed her, in many of her late 70's and early 80's performances, she was amazing. Brava, Renata. Praise God for singing like this- for Freni, Callas, and Scotto, Sills, Sutherland and all of them.
Agreed, but many of the others had much more vocal beauty in this role (I think Tebaldi-other than her high C-and Freni were in another class in this role). She was admittedly a far better actress than both.

When Renata saw the tape of this performance, she said she loved everything about it except . . . she hated how she looked. It was then that she went on a major diet and lost weight, becoming a far more glamorous diva on stage.
I listened to Renata Tebaldi before listening to this ..sadly for Scotto the comparison is cruel. Tebaldi had a glorious stable emotionally charged voice without the harsh edgy moments . Her voice never sounds pressurised yet flies above the orchestra. The. Greatest of all time

Puccini ha bisogno di Artisti che entrano nel Personaggio....lei lo fa da par suo; Renata qui resta sulla scia del suo Fraseggio nobilissimo dove le parole sono rese al lusso della lingua italiana...senza cantare come fanno molte interpreti; che magari ;giustamente applaudite, Cantano tutte le note e pare che in bocca mastichino caramelle? (Con uno scempio delle o e delle a...)...e delle frasi di sottolineatura intima come se fossero musica leggera....i suoi successi in tutti ruoli Pucciniani affrontati...sono una testimonianza,,,, del suo nobile Recitar cantando. Certo la curiosità forse l'ha portata qualche volta a osare ...ma qui veramente è Mini.. la sua .Fare dei confronti con un cast simile è una questione spinosa e usare poi certi Giudizi taglienti come si trattasse di vostra sorella che canta in parrocchia...posso comprendere...ma mi chiedo ; con tutto quello che succede andate ad ascoltare le vostre Mimi e fate sonni tranquilli, per molti melomani lei è stata sempre un' ottima cantante...a volte straordinaria.
