When Freni is at her best like here, for me, there is no more beautiful lyric sound. I know this is personal taste, but the balance and color in her voice is just glorious. And she performs this with direct simplicity, the essence of Mimi.

A native New Yorker, I have lived in Milan for the past thirty-eight years; and Mirella Freni had a lot to do with my decision to come here. Her performances, back in the Sixties, at the Met (and in Philadelphia, and in Cleveland, and in Salzburg, and in Paris, and in all the places I went to in order to see and hear her) played a role (although they were not, of course, the only factor) in my determination that Italy was a land of marvels, where I absolutely needed to live. I remember reading somewhere the adage that "people had better be careful about what they wish for in their youth, because they are likely to get it." Well, I'm seventy years old now, and I have gotten out of life much of what I yearned for in my youth. And guess what: "Je ne regrette rien."

I completely agree. This is why Karajan was known as a "singer's conductor". Some conductors treat the singers like instruments, either too fast, too slow, making the orchestra too loud and overpowering the singers, etc. Not Karajan, he always knew how to elicit great vocals.
