  • This video is in response to a recent question on my channel from a viewer who is just starting a movie physical media question and who wanted some comments on DVDs and choosing one format over another.
    These are just some of my thoughts on things to think about in 2024 when it comes to what’s available on digital and streaming formats as well as methods of collecting.
    I hope it is of interest. Thanks for watching

    Starting a dvd and bluray collection these days will be much harder than it was 20 years ago. We used to find them everywhere as late as 2020. but since then, many places that sell them phased them out and your best bet in finding them is in thrift stores, flea markets, ebay, or amazon.

    Great video..I have the same outlook as you..I don’t have a lot of space and use folders to keep my collection.I use a app so ti still have the photos of packaging etc..I watch a wide verity of films.I mostly buy dvds and Blu rays..I’ll wait 10 years and pick up the 4ks for next to nothing

      Hi. Thanks for watching. I have been loathe to start storing movies out of their cases and into sleeves but my collection definitely isn’t getting any smaller so I will likely soon be doing so….Yes, for now a lot of 4K lovers get rid of their DVDs or blu rays so it’s always worth keeping your eye out for what you can find

    Hello Neil really interesting listening thanks. Actually since watching your channel I've found my dvd interest rekindled somewhat and have decided to show any I pick up alongside bluray and 4k I get. I do enjoy once a week going around our local charity shops and seeing what I can find.

      Thanks, Roy. I’ve been enjoying seeing your dvd collection, especially for example the likes of those Studio Classics titles such as The Blue Max and Von Ryan’s Express, which are different to how they were released here.

    Interesting watch this one matey.. first time viewer to your channel so have dropped you a sub 😎👍
    I'm back collecting physical media again after trying to go digital only for a couple of years and hated every minute of it lol. Anyway I've been back collecting since the start of this year and popping up videos on my TH-cam channel for it..
    Looking forward to catching up on some of your previous videos next 😎👍

      Hi. Thanks very much for watching and for the sub. I hope you enjoy the channel, I post a lot of DVDs and do some reviews and specific tributes to certain actors and directors. I will take a look at your channel soon. There’s so many movies out there that I think we need to find a balance with enjoying both physical media and digital…unless of course we win the lottery and can afford mansion size houses to store all our media 😄

      @@neilsmoviechannel3199 Sadly there was no balance for me.. got sick and tired of fancying to watch a particular film and it not being on the streaming services I was paying monthly for.. love my little movie room and the ever expanding collection.. going through of an evening and picking from the shelves.. just like the old Blockbuster days lol 😎👍

    A lot of good advice here, Neil. I know the feeling of being overwhelmed with so much "stuff" around and so many choices of things to watch or read or listen to on the stereo. The habit of collecting can be frustrating and draining in some ways. But, as you said, it's necessary to try and stay focused on what you yourself consider to be important. For me, living in a modest sized house, space is a big concern and I have limitations on how much of a movie room I can set up. The paper sleeve idea is a good one and I've considered doing that someday. As for the big push toward 4K, you and I have already talked about that. I am still happy with DVDs and they will always make up the bulk of my collection.

    • @neilsmoviechannel3199
      @neilsmoviechannel3199  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Mike. Thanks for commenting. Yes, I have plenty of self-loathing days where I give myself a talking to for having so many films I haven’t watched yet and yet still eagerly looking for others. I’m only in an apartment and so can’t do a dedicated movie room. My sticking point with putting the movies into sleeves is that part of me says that’s not really the answer and I should instead let go of a lot of the collection. I’ve definitely picked up some poor choices at times so i should be able to thin things down….but I haven’t done so yet haha. Have a good weekend, Mike

    Hi Neil, That was an absolutely fantastic video to watch. You are so right about all the things you have to consider before collecting lots of videos. I feel that DVD's are the best because more rare and unusual titles are put on DVD. But I even like VHS still, because I have so many of them. Having room is definitely an issue too.I really enjoyed your video, it was very informative! So thank you.

    Hi Neil, excellent advice mate, I often pop to charity shops and market stalls (stopping for a coffee along the way) and even if you don’t find anything worth picking up, it’s still an enjoyable experience. (the hunt is the best thing) I have OCD issues and mixing formats drives me crazy, it’s all or nothing with me (much to my own annoyance) DVD is a great format and like you I had thousands of titles before switching over completely to blu-ray. Plus DVD’s have so many more titles available. I often watch films alone Neil as the wife likes mainstream films only, (I would also add, a collection can take years to accumulate but remember, we all started with one film) nice one mate. Take care👍😃👍

      @neilsmoviechannel3199  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Alan. Great comments, thank you. Not to talk lightly of OCD but I think probably most collectors have it to some degree and we all have our idiosyncratic ways of collecting and displaying. Your collection is always so neatly arranged….I watch films alone as I’m evidently just an annoying git to be around, haha. Have a good weekend mate

    All good points mate.
    The places of finding physical media especially movies where I’m located is getting a battle but I do occasionally pick up the odd movie from time to time.The other day at Vinies I found two good DVDs for a buck each,Ken Park and Bad Company in concert that was awesome .I too am hitting the 4000 mark.I love ally different and wonderful and obscure films and that makes it harder to find them out in the wild.I still occasionally head to eBay for DVDs sometimes.I do try to sick with Blu ray thoe but the movies I like are always oop and cost an arm and leg on Blu ray at times.

    I learned over COVID that having physical media is useless. I had about 500 movies and ended up selling most of it and digitizing all of it on a server on a home network. Only one I kept are a few Criterion sets which are truly worth keeping.

      Thanks, Quentin. I bought the shelf unit second hand. It’s metal, freestanding and pretty sturdy, holding some 800 DVDs. I’m not sure of the make. On Amazon there is a similar looking Atlantic model but it’s not the same….I’m in Canada and bought the sleeves on Amazon , advertised as mds brand, 50 pk refill sleeves for dvd blu ray storage. If you’re in the US have a look at cereal at midnight’s channel or movie edge as they both did videos a while back referencing sleeves they bought from US suppliers

    Hi Neil I do buy dvds still. Mostly of old classic movies. I dont need those on blu ray I find the quality good enough for those. My local market stocks quite a few classic movies so I like to pick two or three up every month. I can pick up a dvd for two or three quid.

    DVD is still a great format,just don't go above a 65 inch TV and make sure you have a player that upscales well, I have a Toshiba HD-A30 HD DVD player and it's fantastic at upscaling DVD. Sometimes I'd argue DVD is the better format, the Blu Ray transfer of "Predator" is notoriously bad so I prefer the DVD, also "Labyrinth" on Superbit DVD is amazing, it looks great but still hides a bit of the movies age (you can literally see puppet strings on the blu ray) and has DTS 5.1 audio.

    dvd good enough for us gen x ,sometime a movie needs to be on dvd and not blu ray or 4k ,i dont want to see every little detail, or line on the actors face. The move VICE SQUAD looks terrible on blu ray. The vhs or dvd version really ads to the realism of the 70s early 80s look.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, there are definitely generational differences. Younger people have grown up in the digital age and are seeing movies differently now. Vice Squad, that’s a movie to look out for. Funnily enough though I do have Season Hubley in Hardcore on blu ray, very much a grimy 70s movie but it does look fine. But Wings Hauser in 4K may be going too far :)

    I find it interesting you collect dvd so heavily. I’m not a resolution snob but I find it almost hard to enjoy the movie. I think I’m personally just so used to at least Bluray quality now and I rather wait and spend the extra couple of dollars.
    I agree with you on the exercise part also. Every month or so I take the train to Toronto and walk around to the various stores. I grab myself a slice of pizza and some drinks and make a day out of it, even if I don’t find anything.
