Frank, Joao Gilberto summarises the spirit of Bossa Nova. To sing with much air in the voice, almost whispering, and without any vibrato. He got famous in the whole world doing that, and Stan Getz got crazy with him thanks to his metrics. He could sing long notes in the melody until the next compass or make them shorter to start earlier the melody that should be sang in the next compass! It was his "trademark". He could sing the same song like 4 times and NEVER sing with the metrics in the same way. He could attack with syncopes or contratempo changing the way the songs would be sang, not putting the stress in the "tempo forte" of the song but in the contratempo...He was brilliant doing it and I think that the only artist in Brazil that does it so wonderfully as he did is called ROSA PASSOS. She sings bossa nova and samba and her metrics and swing in the songs are amazing.

The two were at a show that ended at dawn and João offered to take Gal home in his car. João was driving and, as he didn't stop when the traffic lights were red, she warned him: João, you're going to cause an accident. To which João replied, I know when a car comes on the other street. Gal: "but how do you know if you don't see". John: "I listen, trust". And they continued their journey to Gal's house without an accident.
