Just thought I would add that Chulane can return himself in case you need to turn off the card draw effect to avoid self milling (you can also obviously throw Lab-Man into your deck).
Chulane is essentially a refuge camp for the Captain Sisay decks after the paradox engine ban. The age old saying of adding islands and blue cards to your deck will make it better.
Another great deck tech video! I don't play cEDH myself but I do like watching games and deck techs from a more competitive perspective. Upon stumbling upon this channel I've become even more interested in cEDH. You have such great stripped down content that keeps it real and maintains the focus on the cards and the strategies. I recently started my own TH-cam channel for the commander format. I've been playing Magic: the Gathering on/off since Fallen Empires and I've been considering making my own TH-cam channel for quite some time. I have been inspired by a handful of youtubers but in particular I've been inspired by your style of analyzing cards. You strive to keep everything as efficient as possible. You try and optimize all plays and slots in the deck. You really consider how to put all the pieces and remove the chaff within the limitations of the Commander deckbuilding. I hope I can inspire others just as you've inspired me. In my channel I'm going to cover topics such as deck techs and eventually post some gamplay videos. The focus isn't so casual but it's also not exclusively competitive; I plan to cover the entire spectrum of deckbuilding and gameplay. I would love some support and feedback from the Commander community so please check out and my channel and subscribe if you like. I only have one video to date but I'll try and produce many more until I'm able to do so periodically. Thanks!
I am playtesting a prototype list that heavily revolves on a blitz with a protected Aluren. Step 1 ramp with dorks Step 2 cast chulane while retrieving (and ramping through him) Aluren through tutors/Academy rector. Protect Aluren by casting It with alchemist's refuge, ranger of eos, counterspells, riftsweeper, then (step 3) achieve instant speed infinite casts with the many many possible couples of different sub-3-cmc creatures that exist that bounce a creature/permanent you own with their ETB and then pick one of many routes from there. First of all you got Brain Freeze. Secondly you could go for tydesprout tyrant and keep the board clear indefinetly until you win, third you throw in your deck both laboratory Maniac and jace wielder of mysteries so you are guaranteed to draw one before your last card is drawn and then proceed to deck yourself. Cloudstone curio enables every creature in your deck ti act as a creature bouncer. There's many roads to get there as there's cost 1, 2, and 3 creatures which bounce your own permanents. These are suopported from not only the huge draw engine that's chulane himself, but also from ranger of eos, recruiter of the guard, summoner's pact, wordly tutor, vannifar prime speaker, finale of devastation, or even defense of the Heart, chord of calling, tooth and nail, neoform, eldritch evolution, or Natural order. I think that if not top tier competitive this is to say the least something which will be fun to play and possibly a Momir Vig 2.0. Thanks for the ideas you gave in this video, you have my like.
Karametra, God of Harvests. And Tatyova, Benithic Druid could be some cool value for a fun build(sorry if I misspelled anything). Cast a dork, get a plains/forest card. Then basically growth spiral, and draw off Tatyova. Potentially twice
Karametra and Tatyova are each 5 so a bit slow for non-budget cEDH. But they're cheap (Tatyova is uncommon!) and so for budget builds they are great. The "random 6/7 indestructible" and "random life gain" are sometimes useful too.
Just a technicality: nexus of fate doesn't have a trigger, it never goes to the graveyard it goes straight to the deck and shuffle itself without a turn of priority. (It's even better ;)
If you ever have trouble pronouncing cards, remember that mtg is designed with english speakers in mind, so even if there are weird ways to pronounce certain letter combinations, reading phonetically will get you the correct answer most of the time. CHŪ-lān is almost guaranteed to be the correct pronunciation.
I'm still a bit confused what the 1-card combo is. Is it just the village bell ringer + 4 mana dorks? Wouldn't that be closer to a 5 card combo? Also, I'm not sure how competitive it is, but Aluren + Man-o'-war (or another similar card) makes laboratory maniac pretty easy (or some other combo, I'm not sure if Bant has many kills with Aluren in play) You could theoretically use Flash + Academy Rector, and then maybe include protean hulk to go get village bell ringers, heritage druid, and 2 other elf dorks?
You're absolutely right. It is a 5+ combo. Not a 1 card combo. But let's talk about aluren now. Because this with aluren is absolutely amazing. I'm going to start brewing that right now.
Its one card in terms of the combo only hard-requires the one card, you could sub out the other cards with any version of what those cards do and get the same result.
Food chain pays for chulane though? your one card combos have a lot of setup that also could be used by food chain and still leave mana up for interaction. not to mention you have all the best creature and enchantment tutors in those colors which is ideal for fc combo
I not down video request like these. I have them in a folder. WHen I notice that a lot of people ask for the same thing. Then sure. Kraj is a bit far off my radar at the moment. but who knows in the future.
so a vannifar chain would love this commander, could also be a great flash hulk commander wink wink, or both, vannifar into the hulk, i love encorporating the karmic guide + revilark combo to be able to get back all the rest of the untappers to pod me up the chain to hulk, then hulk into whatever i want (if i pod the hulk with vannifar i get a vorinclex cmc off vannifar + 6 cmc of hulk package) which is usually the other half of the deadyeye navigator + peregrin drake combo i've already vanifar'd out , all great lines of play for this commander :)
@@gaston6671 Different deck to creature storm. Food chain could be the more consistent version however since you can just continue to food chain and draw afterwards. Not that we keep getting new food chain commanders every damn set nowadays.
He definitely looks fun. But this level of power creep I find concerning. He should be a 6 drop minimum. The decks will be filled with mana dorks, so 6 mana will still be easy. But he is just 5. People need 1 extra turn to deal with this beacon of power creep.
I was thinking of showing a hulk line. But considering we already have a good plan A I kinda droped it. But yes. There are some hulk lines you can go here.
There ovbiously going to release at least 3 other just as broken commanders in order to break edh and make brawl fun. I totally expect a red white commander who makes all red spell cost 1 less and all white spells gain you 2 life or something busted like that, the power creep is a sneaky way to break modern and edh and get everyone locked into rotation because only in standard will these broken cards be play tested so they do not completely break the game.
Gitrog has a couple of inherent advantages at the same cmc though. 3 colourless is an easier ask than a 3rd colour with fast mana in the format, but let's say you have played your land for turn and have exactly the 5 mana you need for both. You cast Gitrog and you could immediately play another land to get something in the way of value the turn he enters. This guy needs a creature to be cast to have the same level of value on initial cast. Its not a huge difference, but 5 mana do nothing early doesn't compare to any form of immediate usage.
Also can you please try to break the new populate commander when it comes out? My playgroup said it couldn’t be broken compared to others. I’d love to prove them wrong

Great content as always. Thank you for consistent content that always helps to make me think about and enjoy the format
I didn't even notice that it puts the lands into play untapped the first time I saw this card, and I still knew it was broken,

They were ideas for a more Budget, more fun shenanigans
Alluren almost immediately wins games. Play < 3cmc creatures that bounce themselves, draw your entire deck (at flash speed) and flash in lab maniac.
yeay. sure.
Why do you don't talk about Cloudstone Curio? This card is mostly the best one card combo that is possible for this deck.
Love the videos man. LOVE the edh format and I really enjoy dipping my foot into the cEdh pool with your videos. Keep them coming!
Ohh I will:9 Glad you like em.
No mention of aluren is suprising, card seems really good and enables combos as well
Just a technicality: nexus of fate doesn't have a trigger, it never goes to the graveyard it goes straight to the deck and shuffle itself without a turn of priority. (It's even better ;)
Hmmm I actully didn't know that. "You learn something new everyday."

He seems really good... But I have a Derevi deck and I don't think he'll make people hate me less if I use him instead.
7:15 Would Jace, Wielder of Mysteries be fine instead of Labman? It's not completely a dead card while not winning.
@@AndrewWoodford You are right. Maybe labman is better than Jace since both are meant to be played only when we aim at winning.
Chulane is essentially what I did for my Animar deck. Needless to say I wanna make both since I can do stax + bouncing.
Pretty sure, you are 1 of the few that says his name the right way :) are there any update you would do to this deck?
How about that Aluren Shrieking Drake combo tho?

In Russian Chulane sounds like a basement👍
Long laughed when I first saw her
I can understand that. There is a similar case with Estrid the masked. This is an actuall swedish name. But it is really old. Like REALLY OLD!
Other than not having black Chulane is everything I want in a alruen commander for cedh
I don't know if you take video requests, but I would love to see a video about Experiment Kraj. Keep up the good content!

alternatively, flash hulk at end of opponents turn to get vannifar & some stuff to pod away to win on ur next turn with a vannifar chain
Do you think that Quirion Ranger could have combo potential with Chulane?
It works with Retraction Helix or Banishing Knack, infinitely recasting the ranger and drawing the deck. Another two-card combo, though.
Thinking of making something like derevi which utilize birthing pod and vannifar plus stax creature
This looks more like the threat Vannifar was hyped up to be. If this deck struggles to be cedh level, his cmc is entirely the reason it would fail.
That I totally agree on. The 5 CMC is a problem. But I think green can help him.
BounceBurnBuff The 5CMC doesn’t matter if you run the deck as Food Chain
@@gaston6671 Different deck to creature storm. Food chain could be the more consistent version however since you can just continue to food chain and draw afterwards. Not that we keep getting new food chain commanders every damn set nowadays.
BounceBurnBuff Right? Build one version of Chain just to have to do it again next set lol.
BounceBurnBuff Right? Build one version of Chain just to have to do it again next set lol.
you could put oketra and whitemain lion in the deck, and flood of tears and stuff that bounces your stuff
What's the actual wincon in your deck? Is it just Words of Wind-ing every opponents permanents and then swinging?
the deck really looks hella fun to play
I cant wait to build this guy
Chu (like chu chu train) and Lane as is lois lane from Superman.
Another great video, Mons. This creature is awesome!
Earthcraft can also be good for this deck. Just get Shrieking Drake and dig for the wincon.
You think Tales is an ok "survival/ retainers" target in thras/tymn?
You pronounce Chulane very well!
Have you thought about running a trade routes/Dryad arbor combo ?
There's no combo there.
The "Pun" game is real! Intruder Alarm!
Can't wait for this.

sorry to ask. Where did you find this card? i cant find any spoilers yet.

Why do people talk about 5 cmc being too much mana for cEDH? Its the same as gitrog.
Gitrog has a couple of inherent advantages at the same cmc though. 3 colourless is an easier ask than a 3rd colour with fast mana in the format, but let's say you have played your land for turn and have exactly the 5 mana you need for both. And Ghave
Gitrog also has access to Black, bringing many rituals along it
Whenever a deck is running green you have to take into consideration the ramp
Gutting has access to black, meaning more tutors, plus he’s inherently less vulnerable to hate
That is how you pronounce it. I was so excited about this card this list is awesome
Also can you please try to break the new populate commander when it comes out? My playgroup said it couldn’t be broken compared to others. I’d love to prove them wrong

I think it's pronounced "shoo-lane". Might be wrong, though.
Food chain eternal scourge
It's not really a "one card combo" if you require a half dozen cards non-land cards to do it, or need to "rebuild" it.
Chulane is pronounced: chu-LAne.
First!
