I think Bender crumpling on the landing was more to do with the suspension tech at the time than raw strength. He had more travel but basically no damper control so the suspension didn't slow the squish as he went through the travel, he basically hit the bump stop at full speed and then got yeeted back upwards at the same speed he came down. It's sort of a trademark of the bikes at the time, you didn't just have to account for the compression on the landing but also the rebound trying to fire you back upwards, along with the really short top tube lengths of the time it was part of the reason for hanging your arse way out over the back wheel when doing drops because it gave you some kind of damping from the savage rebound.
So, a little bit more background on this jump. The bike that Bender used for his first attempt in 2000 (shown here) was the Karpiel Armageddon which had close to 10in of travel and quite a bit of dampening. Part of the crumple effect you see is him landing on an unprepped landing vs Braggy that landed on a more compacted solid landing which is why you see him rebound pretty hard after the initial hit. Benders second attempt that you can watch in New World Disorder 2 was done on an even bigger travel bike with two rear shocks called the Apocalypse with a 12in travel Risse "big foot" inverted front fork. Bender comes closer to landing it with that bike but not quite.
Just found your channel yesterday and i gotta say your my new favorite mtb channel, I like how diverse the places you go riding are and the way you commentate while riding, big props to you! much love from the usa!
Great video! It really shows what an absolute madman Bender was back then, dropping this cliff with the bike and suspension tech that was available at the time 😮
The clear problem is the landing! You can make every drop if you have the balls for doing that, but this drop has a landing that is too flat for the amount of air time!
Its a double entendre. "Jah" drop. Which would be a jamaican/rasta way of saying God Drop. But also, its a jaw dropping stunt. The Bender videos were featured on the Crusty Demons MX VHS tapes. I think that was my first time learning that mountain biking had evolved from spandex wearing cross country rides.
I watched the Bender videos back in the day and thought this was insane. I wasn't aware someone even tried it after him and did so well considering the steepness of the landing and the surface of the ground. Why did you bring your bike btw if you knew you had to climb up ? :)
i pass it every day cause i use to live up.. For the guy that it. they did a lot of work to the landing cause it was really flat when Bender hit it back in the day. its still nuts that someone hit it and land it
I looked at it back in 2004 when I visited BC and hit the shore. We wanted to see it in real life. After watching it in NWD2. The landing is almost flat. The face of the drop looks like what an apartment building with no windows would look like. I think Bender could have landed it if he had a bike with better geometry. That Armageddon with the Super Monster was just stupid.
Got the original josh bender jaw dop on vhs video 👌 had a picture of it since on my key ring. Classic. Think josh did a 1000 pull ups and push ups a day training for it 💪
You 100% would not survive that on a mx bike, it’d be way too nose heavy/heavy in general. The manueverability of a mtb is so much easier than a dirtbike, owning both. Also the downhill MTBs today have much more travel than a 125 would
were all just waiting for sam pilgrim to hit it on a penny farthing
😂

Imagine modern suspension with 300mm travel

SAME WORDS SAME SENTENCES SAME FEELING.. sharing with you! thanks
Agreed
I don't know why anyone would take that drop. It's like jumping off a five-story building.
exactly
that's why :D

It's called the Jah Drop
True
Thats just death thats just dying thats just death thats how you die
Did Brage's crew pour some water and pack the landing zone? It looks much firmer than when Bender hit it.
I would say they tuned up the landing for sure
Can’t even imagine the scale man! Cool to see in person
Mad respect man keep up the great work but keep safe doing that stuff
I like how he says on earth like there are mtb drops on the moon
bigger ones on Mars
@@bermchasin my favorite trail was on venus fr
I felt you when you said you didn't want to go any closer to the edge, I was hoping you wouldn't bc I wouldn't have either. I know my luck lmao
Was looking for the Brage Clip and came across this. Sick video, cheers man ✌️

Clickbait. 7 minutes of talking when the expectation was that he'd ride it. I get why he didn't but this was false advertising regardless.
How is it clickbait, the title doesnt say "riding the world's biggest drop"
lol
He literally said at the beginning he wasn’t going to ride it 😂
omFg! That is hardline rampage on steroids 😬😬

Haha you went!! It looks so sketchy 😂
Understandable bro that is one of the scariest things you could do… it’s like jumping 5 floors
More like 7

Dylan could do it

Insane ❤
Gotta wonder how this compares to Dylan Stark's drop. both incredible
Taller but way shorter
No, Alex. Please. NO (as in, NEVER) 😲💀
Dylan Stark will do it
Go go go go go!
Can you toss a measuring tape off? I've always wondered how big it is!
Depending how far you go, 50-60ft. Brage went about 55 which is 16.5m
Crazy but v cool
Jah
Did i miss out on something? A kinda drop maybe??? Or is there a part 2??
55ft almost huck to flat! crazy
when 30 degrees is basically still flat because you are falling straight vertical
5 min from my house
Have you been there?
Nice video
Dude you are a legend!
Thank you so much, its been my dream for years to see what the jah drop actually looks like.
Bender is my idol.
Dude DONT do it .
I'd do that drop on a 2 stroke say 125 MX bike, not on a bicycle tho. Jesus, that's gnarly.

Yeah mx bikes have still got more travel than Dh bikes but doing this on a mx bike would be asking for hospital

What kind of mount do you use?

Shame?

Similar size to some of the big rampage drops but *vertical*. And then to flat landing too
