John Browning's Final Performance: The Browning Hi Power

  • The Browning Hi-Power was a game-changer when introduced in the 1930s and it’s still a revered gun culture icon today- and for good reason.
Envisioned by firearms genius John Moses Browning in the early 1920s, as his most modern combat handgun, the Hi-Power was strong, simple, accurate and reliable while being easier to manufacture than many contemporary pistol designs. Single-action, like his vaunted Colt Model 1911, the improved short recoil Hi-Power used FN engineer Dieudonné Saive’s staggered magazine to produce a 13+1 round capacity in 9mm.
With the first patents on the Hi-Power applied for in 1923, Browning himself would pass away in his workshop in Belgium at age 71 in 1927- leaving Saive to finish the design. By 1935 it was ready for production and was adopted by the Belgian Army.
During World War II, the Germans took over the FN factory in Belgium in 1940 and continued producing the Hi-Power for their own use while Saive, who managed to escape to the West, would help put the gun into production by English in Canada for Allied use. As such the Hi-Power saw active front-line service on both sides of the conflict.
After the war was over and commercial production restarted, the Hi-Power was one of the most popular military handguns in the West, serving at one time or another with 68 countries, and carved out a stake of the civilian market as well. Browning-marked guns were made by FN starting in 1954 and imported to the U.S. with latter models assembled in Portugal from components made in Belgium.
By 2018, FN ceased the production of the vaunted handgun after a more than 80-year run.

In the 1970's, I carried a Browning pistol for self defence while working with the military in Central and South America. The ammunition was free, plentiful and accounted for my frequent practice and proficiency. After years of use, my pistol did ratled a bit, but it remained accurate and never jamed or misfire. There were many firearm available to me, but I relied on my 9mm Browning often leaving my rifle behind. Then I was forced to leave my old Browning behind while in transit back home. Along came the Glocks. Not wishing to resist change, I eventually adapted to the trigger pull of a .40 caliber Glock 23. However, after just a few years it did what neither the Browning or the 1911 ever did. The magazin springs weakened causing jam. I replaced the magazines and stiffer springs, but I lost confidence on the weapon. Out of nostalgia, I may now buy one of the Browning clones made in Turkey.

Finest handguns I ever carried. I carried two Belgians manufactured mid 1950's they never failed no matter what ammo I'd run thru them. Springs did not weaken only accuracy problem was shooter error. I have been gifted some of the newer handguns like Glock but no thank you. I no longer need to carry but I still do and The Browning HP's aren't left at home
Years ago I did get some higher capacity mag's even bought a couple of 20rd & 30rd but I'm happy with the 13's and one in the pipe. In the late 1970's I did buy a few of the 17rd mag's they work beautifully with two hi powers each holding 17's and one in each pipe 36 rds should handle most situations if not slam in two 20"s. They have great action accuracy not to heavy but you know they're in their holsters..I was a 1911 man until the brownings came into my life...a dog can't chew up Brownings like these composit plastic weapons..I'm sorry sir my dog ate my Glock..😄😂🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

FN started Hi Power assembly in Portugal in 1971, the Browning Arms roll mark change came later. It was done at a plant set up by FN and the results were indistinguishable from Belgian assembly.
All parts were made in Belgium.
The magazine safety was there from the beginning.
The first prototype was not made by John Browning, it was made by his protogé, Dieudonné Saive who later went on to finish it.

I believe you are mistaken when you suggest that the early commercial models lacked a magazine disconnect. That's been a feature of the Hi Power since day one (1935). Your specimen which lacked that feature likely had the disconnect device removed, which is an easy operation to perform.

    Some corrections:
    1. time 0:29 - production already started 1935 since it was officially adopted by the Belgian army in that year.
    2. time 1:31 - the dimple is on the other side of the slide and not what you are pointing. It was dropped in early '60s.
    3. time 1:45 - ring or round hammer, not ring trigger.
    4. time 1:49 - older (even later) models will not fire if magazine is removed unless someone has the magazine disconnect safety removed.

The only reference I could find said that the extractor was changed in 1962. This guy has zero credibility.

magazine disconnect was a feature that the French demanded in 1935 before rejecting the HP. The French military required that:
    the arm must be compact
the magazine have a capacity of at least 10 rounds
the gun have a magazine disconnect device, an external hammer, and a positive safety
the gun be robust and simple to disassemble and reassemble
the gun be capable of killing a man at 50 meters.

You probably have a great gun and there’s no arguing with the fact that the combination of the 1911 and the .45ACP is a wonderful thing...but in my humble opinion modern hollow point +P ammunition in 9mm has dramatically improved the effectiveness of that caliber.

@@edt8535 It has but consider this in a self defense scenario. The 9mm round is light and fast. That means there is a high likelihood that it will pass through and through. A 230 gr JHP will not pass through and therefore dumps 100% of its energy inside the threat.

    • @edt8535

@@scottmurphy650 …modern hollow points have been a game changer. The narrower bullets of similar weight and caliber have proven extremely successful (.357 mag with a 125 gr hollowpoint, and the .357 Sig with a similar bullet). The 9+p and +p+ stuff are limited by case capacity (or 9mm in general I should say), but the hotter stuff with hollow points seem to grown in popularity to the point where the once extremely popular .40 is nearly dead.
My hat is off to the venerable .45, it’s a good one without a doubt-but the 9mm +P with a 115 or 124 gr hollowpoint is nothing to sneeze at 🤧…
