  • 2023 Yamaha YZ450F Monster Edition vs 2023 Honda CRF450 Works Edition: Back to Back comparison ride. Back to Back rides are a great way to get a feel for the different characteristics of each bike. Both my fast son (5'10" 170 lbs) and I (6'2" 190 lbs slow Vet) rode these bikes today. Our thoughts on each....
    23 CRF450 Works Edition
    The 2023 engine updates are instantly noticeable with smoother low to mid power that is easy to control with excellent throttle to rear wheel connectivity and also helps calm the chassis. I have not ridden a stock '23 CRF450R yet but the ported head, full Yoshimura exhaust, and unique engine mapping give the Works Edition engine a very smooth yet powerful engine character. The CRF450 engine does have noticeably more vibration than the '23 YZ450F engine. The CRF feels smaller up front with that usual CRF effortless turn initiation entering corners. The coated Showa suspension on the Works Edition gives a friction free feel that is noticeable on the little chop. Great "Just Feels Right" Honda ergos. There is something about the looks of a Honda CRF450 Works Edition...perhaps the best looking bike off the showroom floor?
    23 YZ450F
    The engine stands out on the YZ450 and dominates the character of the whole bike. The engine is so free feeling with 2-stroke like response that builds RPM and power quickly and controllably and with very little engine braking and little engine vibration. With the 12~14 lbs of fuel under the seat at the CG, tilted back cylinder head, and air box behind the steering head mass centralization plus the free feeling engine combine to make the YZ450F feel very lightweight in motion - more like a 350F. The YZ450 feels a little taller in the corners compared to the CRF450. 2nd and 3rd gears feel a tick taller overall compared to the CRF450. KYB suspension is well damped yet still has a plush and controlled feel.
    Overall:
    My son picked the YZ450F as his favorite with better suspension control, lighter weight feeling in motion (easier to changer directions), and just more fun to ride - a YZ450F that does not feel like a 450F...more like a powerful YZ350F.
    I give a slight edge to the YZ450F for the free feeling engine combined with a lighter feel in motion that make for a playful and fun to ride 450F.

    Great video mate, relatable the way you’re explaining it while you’re riding. Regards your comparisons, I was impressed with your comments on Hondas rider position, I grew up on CR 2strokes and throughout my adult life have raced YZs, I’ve just gone back to a Honda and I love the nimble feeling, having the weight towards the front really works because I’m a shorter guy and I need to load that front end, I feel the Honda is considerably easier through the corners because it gets me over the handlebars, unlike the Yamaha that makes me feel like I’m riding a Harley chopper… great videos mate. Keep up the good work… love to know a bit more about your locations, this track looks like it’s quite new, did someone win lotto and build their dream 🤔I’ve subscribed. 👍

      @@Davido50 I've ridden both. The '23 has a lot of updates (engine/frame). The new head and mapping give the '23 engine a smoother power response overall which make it easier to ride. The '22 engine hits hard and some riders may prefer the super strong mid range (makes it a bit more tiring to ride). The updated '23 suspension settings are more balanced (stiffer rear matches the front better) but many still get the '23 re-valved. I think the '23 engine updates are worth the little extra money as it helps settle the whole chassis down and the bike works better overall and is a little easier to ride.

    Have you ridden a 2018 yz250f and a 2018 crf250r, and if so what is your comparison on those two bikes. Just wondering because I'm looking into getting a dirtbike and think a 250 would be the way to go and those 2 bikes are both available. Thanks

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've ridden both a while ago. The Honda engine was a screamer with weak low to mid power. The suspension was decently compliant and the ergos were thinner and felt more normal. The 2018 YZ250F engine was much stronger - especially low to mid and the KYB suspension worked over a wide range of terrain and rider weights/speed. If you can get a test ride (even a putt around a field) perhaps the character of each bike will make the decision easy for you!

    Great info, bud. Hard to believe the HONDA WE feels slower. I wonder what mode you have it on…BTW, where did you get those very cool Pro-Link decals…? Thank you in advance for any info that you may provide. Ride safe! 🤙🏻🇺🇸

      The 450WEW is not slow...just "felt" slower after getting off the 23 YZ450 (which is hyper responsive - revs like a YZ250F but has 59 hp). The 450WE was in standard map (Map 1). I have ridden the 21/22 CRF450R and prefer the new 23 CRF450WE power character - stronger yet smoother roll with a linear build that also helps keep the chassis more balanced ('22 CRF450R had that mid range almost hit). My buddy's Dad had those PRO-LINK stickers made for his '23 CRF450R 50th anniversary edition. I have no idea who made them but I would guess Throttle Jockey could. I really like the blue 50th seat and PRO-LINK sticker combo...80's CR vibe

      Yes!!! Aggressive mode (Map 3) on the Honda is FAST!! The Honda has so much low to mid torque - really strong.

    Yamaha sounds way better than the stock trash it comes with. Honda is so heavy. Suspension is all day yamaha. Frame and ergos once upon time that was Hondas territory but the frames haven’t been to good lately so Yamaha will take that stat too. Reliability… I’ve seen both have issues less than 40 hours in electrical and mechanical. Yamaha is def the better bike overall won’t beat you up as fast either.

      Honda chassis and suspension has been polarizing the past few years (even on the Works Edition). Yamaha KYB suspension works so well off the showroom floor they usually set the bar for each class. New '23 YZ450 engine is responsive! How about your thoughts on the KTM/Husky 450's?

      @@mxengineer1 I own all of them and still prefer the ktm 450sxf to any other model in the 459 class. When all critical factors weigh in to balance out a complete overall bike analysis, the Ktm outshined them all despite having air forks they still work tremendously well and have a wide range of adjustment for the average consumer, but the lightweight chassis, the Brembo brakes, the hydraulic clutch that feels effortless to pull, the ergonomics that allow for a multitude of riders to feel comfortable on, just far outweighed what the rest of the competition has to offer Yamaha does come in competitively, but when it comes to reliability, long-term, that is when it comes to rider durability on the track when it comes to precise braking when it comes to an overall package that is going to deliver and allow you to have the best chance to win races and have a bike that won’t fail on you at 30 hours or 40 hours Ktm it’s just unbeatable Honda used to hold a close bar but unfortunately they’ve gone the other direction the only one remotely close to challenge in Ktm, Gas Gas or husky are the Yamaha. This suspension alone is so good that most people will bypass any other flaws the bike has.
