  • In this episode we work hard to complete the exterior of the cabin and address your cabin concerns while Holden and his friend from school build a quinzee using snow. We feed our chickadee friends and we show off our matching snowsuits from the 80's. We even get a chance to run the sleds and have FUN after enjoying a "meal" cooked on the wood stove! We are now working on the outhouse: • Building Outhouse at O...
    We set up a thermometer to figure out how warm we can get the cabin. We install an antler-hand handle door hand and circular window. Kevin shows off his Norwood shake-maker. Kevin will talk about the cost of of our wood stove and why we decided to get it.

    The idea in this episode is to complete all the exterior work including the trim, siding and door. We will talk about some of the concerns you've been having, from the mold on the wood, the levelness of the cabin, burning brush rather than putting it in the wood stove and much more.

    Whenever we run out of lumber, we just mill more wood from trees that are right on the property. We'll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv's, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient.
    We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don't have to kiln dry the wood or let it season.
    Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin.
    In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.
    We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
    Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

    Regarding the questions you threw in the fire, good for you. I have over 40 years building experience. From cabins in remote Alaska, to over 3,000 homes, dozens of schools churches fire and police stations. Yeah, I can pick things out. But your doing great, no real structural problems. Your having fun, doing great. More power to you. Haters will always hate, you handled him awesome.

      @@riverrat1149 Sorry for Highjacking your coment thread, but i have a more area specific question. Couldnt they cover the Inside with another Wall(Outer wall - Air Pocket - Inner Wall) to isolate the cabin? I know that it is sometimes done in cheap hunting huts in europe.

      @@2afk Too cold in Ontario for that, hes gonna put some real insulation in there forsure. I would recommend cheap fiberglass, but you never know with wood beard, we might see a spray foam sponsor yet. When we were kids we would fill the walls of our camps with cardboard boxes we would collect from the local grocery store.

    Hello from California! I'm a 75 year old grandma who enjoys being taken into the woods I grew up in in Minnesota! What you've done reminds me of my dad and my uncles! They all loved working on projects together.
    Don't be concerned with the people who are negative. I've seen them all before in other channels. Best way to deal with them is just what you did and block them from your Channel. The rest of us love what you've done! Think about all the great years you have ahead of you with your families in this wonderful cabin. Blessings to you all!

You can not be successful without haters these days. Every successful person has haters! If you don't have haters, then you're not there yet in terms of viewership. Hey at the end of the day it's still counts as a view and a comment, and that only helps the channel.

    I have been a builder/carpenter and then contractor for many years, and for what this structure is, you have over engineered it, meaning you have built it stronger and better than a contractor would have. That aside, Mankind has been building houses like these for tens of thousands of years without building codes. That is kind of the point isn't it? that you can just put in the effort, and without a huge knowledge base come up with something amazing. Most of the learning with the cabin is just like the quinsy, if it fails, then build it better next time. I can almost guarantee you that the person complaining about building codes, has never built anything in his life, or is mad that you did not PAY a contractor, and they are trying to protect their job. People are happiest when we create, that is our divine destiny. So get off your couch, and go make stuff happen. By the way good job on being a dad! letting your son fail, then giving him hope and instruction as he begins again!!!!

    I have been a carpenter for 35 years. I believe what you guys accomplished is absolutely beautiful! Sure things are going to be different by using non dimensional self milled lumber, So you build accordingly as you have done. Sure there are a couple of things I myself would have done differently, But thats true for almost any project. Keep up the good work and I hope you guys have Many-Many years of enjoyment with this lovely little cabin!

    I’m approaching the golden age of seventy and have spent almost all of those years in the Maine North Woods , whitewater canoeing, and camping. About 10 years ago I bought some land in a remote location (58 miles of dirt road to get to). I set about to build a camp. With the help of many, I rebuilt the last 5 miles of an old logging road to access the property. I then cleared the land, living out of a small tent, and began to build my camp. The small community that lives up here volunteered help when needed and gave suggestions along the way. I happened onto your website and listened to your eloquent rebuttal of one persons criticisms. You are best to leave them be, suggestions are better than criticism. Many people who render those criticisms have never lived or worked in the bush. I applaud you ambition. A tribe thrives on suggestions to solve a problem.

    I have watched all of your episodes. I have noticed some things that one wouldn't do in a suburban home in a metro area. But this is a cabin in the woods. Their are no structural problems and no safety issues. I have built a few spec homes over the years and I'd live in that cabin without hesitation. There are trolls everywhere. Ignore them.

    Thanks for sharing. For those who are not on board with the concept of building a cabin in the woods; understand different areas have different building standards; for good reasons. I think this cabin is sound; based upon good engineering principles. Some of my college has been learning in Architecture and structural engineering. The cabin is level; able to hold up under snow load. When insulated, should be able to be heated to 15 to 25 degrees C. Great job. Thanks for having son learn your skills, sharing on You Tube. Epic bars look and sound great, with less tight budget, I would buy them. For those naysayers; I would ask; "Could you just get a life, this man is doing a great job, see the positives?". Peace, long life and health to all.

    Chris, I want you to know that you inspire me, it’s refreshing to see someone be so unapologetically human, the world is a weird place and I think that a lot of people struggle to find their place, but knowing there are people like you, who know who and what they are, is needed in this day and age. Where we fit in the world, our relationship with nature, not denying that truth. You’ve motivated me to focus on what makes me human, where I fit. And I hope that someday I’ll be able to be as genuine and honest as you are.
    The cabin looks great by the way, definitely on my list of future goals. Cheers brother.

    You guys should be proud of what you have accomplished. the cabin is so very nice. Don't let the negative people concern, or bother you; they are jealous, and very unhappy souls with their own lives. Continue to go forward with positive thoughts and pray for them, sending them your positive energy. They can only do the best they can with what they know - yes its unfortunate where they are in life. It's sad that these folks have nothing better to do with their lives but to criticize others and project their negativity. You have put yourselves above that!! Bless you.

    Yes positive; thank you! I love the salvaged window from the large light fixture, what a great dump find. I also like the kids snow Fort efforts as well. A forest cabin is not suppose to be made by code! Piss on Code, no code in the forest, the only code needed is stress free fun loving time in the forest and any effort to get a few moments of comfort from the weather in a make shift forest cabin shelter, then that’s a big bonus! Great efforts on the cabin. Funny, I designed a swimming pool and concrete surround on the cuff, meaning no plan, no future for thaught, just think it up and go. We still get compliments for its unique style.

    Have a cabin on an island on Lake Temagami. No concrete foundation. Just built upon cedar posts. Much larger and grander than the one being built here. Our cabin was built in the 60’s. Still there today. Just replace cedar posts as needed. We replaced posts in 1989. Still holding strong today. All you “Holmes on Homes” trolls can go take hike and critique homes being built in Toronto suburbs. Leave the true men to their business creating a shelter in the bush. Or go get an education at the Institute of Bushology like these guys. It’s worth the price of Tuition, which is just taking time and effort to experience living in the bush for an extended period of time.

      Most of the criticisms arrive out of keeping costs down. No osb sheathing on the walls will compromise strength , will it make a difference , who knows. A building wrap would be nice too, to prevent drafts and possible mold. So they will burn more wood, not a big deal for such a small cabin with wood nearby. But most here would build much larger and all these issues would add up. Especially if you purchase your wood . Ol Shawn James built his cabin on the cheap too, but living their full time already has him with regrets.His consumption of wood for a 200 sq ft building was hard to believe . 30 odd face cords i believe.

    • @ogama843
      @ogama843 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Hubert you will need at least 2 heavy duty jacks. Work one post at a time. Lift building just enough to take pressure off old post and remove it. Insert new post and set building back down. Depending how your cabin is built, you may be able to work on several posts with one lift. 2 ft. Clearance should be enough to crawl under. It can be done. Have some bug spray handy, because the dark moist environment under a cabin is a mosquito haven.

      Yes, I would definitely agree on either making that convex window a sealed, fixed window or setting it in a hinged frame and having an easily attached screen on the inside.
      Not to criticize too harshly but the way that window is now is pretty hack.

    The mold on the wall framing can just be washed off. I was in the mold remediation industry for a long time. The building looks great. The only mold concern I would have is on the roof sheathing. I seen you insulated the pockets. If there isn’t ventilation that’s going to mold. It won’t be a health concern but you may need to replace the entire roof in a few years because of rot. That’s if there’s no ventilation for the roof sheathing. But seriously, awesome video and series. You guys are great. To hell with the haters. @@TheWoodedBeardsman You guys are doing great on building techniques, been in the construction business all my life building shops garages and pole barns, this cabin is well built, I've also done dozens of metal roofs, your roof will breathe fine.
      For those that the mold bothers, in the "old days" they'd use boron for wood preservative treatment, If ya haven't buttoned up the interior yet you can dissolve boraxo(boron) in water and spray in on everything including the exposed live edge beams and exterior if you like, it kills and prevents the regrowth of wet rot, dry rot and molds, it's also a fire retardant and an insecticide.
      The small gaps in the lap siding will allow the walls to breathe, that's good, you can line the inside with plastic like roof (vapor barrier is tight against the interior walls) and anything inside the walls will have to "outgas" to the outside, not into the interior.

    • @gregowen2377
      @gregowen2377 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adirondack American is absolutely correct. However, we have a cabin in North Georgia mountains, we used plastic to hold up insulation, MISTAKE!!! Created moisture barrier between plywood and plastic. Caused mega mold issues! Your time roof will surely amplify that problem. You may consider using metal wire to hold in insulation. That plastic will make it moist year round as it won't escape and dry out! Just hoping this helps? Great cabin guys!!! (:

      I like to shovel the snow off my deck it helps prevent ice damage over the years, as it melts then refreezes, but like he said, it's so easy to replace that it really isn't a big deal. Roof is Canada proof being that steep. Snow is very heavy. it's frozen water, so yeah it caves in roofs all the time here in Utah, mostly sheds where people didn't take the time to make them steep enough, or to remove the snow. Most houses here have to have a certain pitch to the roof, but doing so makes it so the snow usually isn't a problem.

Cut a bunch of sticks the same length as you want the thickness of your dome. 10in or whatever and poke them into the snow before it sets hard. kinda like a porcupine so you would have a depth guide to tell you when to stop digging once you are digging from inside.
