John, I've been really enjoying watching your videos. I've been working as a paralegal for about 4 years now. Over the past month or so, I've been strongly considering making a career change to becoming a therapist. Ideally, I would love to have my own private practice. Hearing your perspective as a former lawyer has been quite timely and relatable for me (especially since I was once planning to become a lawyer). Thank you for your insights and wisdom. Best ~ Xavier.

Thanks for that Xavier, it’s good to hear and I appreciate you saying. So glad you’ve been finding the videos helpful. Great to hear that you’re thinking of moving into the career as a therapist and do feel free to let me know how it’s all going if you feel like it at any point : )

I'm struggling with this question right now. I've had a long career in technology, but am burned out from it and need to do something else. I also started getting counselling myself a few years ago and find it helpful and very interesting.
I'm also very much an introvert, and not really a people person at all, although I'm very sensitive and empathetic. How the heck do i know if i could be a good counsellor? Does a masters program sort of transform you into one?
    Thanks 🙏🙏

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. It raises a great question I think, ie, what are the qualities needed to be a successful therapist. I think it’s such an interesting and important question that I’m going to record my next video on it and will mention this comment if that’s ok.
In the process of thinking about it, I’ve listed 10 qualities that, to me, are important and I see around me a lot in the therapy world.
In terms a couple of specifics you mention in your comment, firstly about what you’re like around people, I do believe that that might change as you got further into the training and also, yes, I think the training does often significantly change how we see ourselves and others.
These replies don’t allow much more in terms of exploration of things, but, as I say, I’m going to record a video on it, so do look out for it and, again, thank you so much for your comment!

I’m just about to sign up to a 3 year course in psychotherapeutic counselling. What I’d really like to know is how one builds their private practice and if there’s enough business out there? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for these videos, they’re really informative.

You’re very welcome about the videos and thanks for saying, I really appreciate it. That’s a great suggestion for a video, i.e., how to find clients and are there enough clients out there, so I shall do one about that next (I have videos on narcissism, bisexuality and loneliness coming up, but will make this the one after them). I really wish you all the best with the course and do let me know how it’s going if you feel like it, John-Paul

Hi! Thank you for this video. You mentioned training alongside 20-year-olds. Would you say considering this profession at 50 is a little too late?

Hi there, you’re very welcome about the video, thanks for saying. Not at all too late in my view no, I think it’s a great age to come in to the profession. Genuinely never too late in my view!
It’s an interesting point you raise though. Some people are concerned about being too young, others too old. Hopefully it’ll come up in conversations with other therapists on the channel, but thanks for raising it and I’ll definitely try to include it somewhere in future videos.

I know, would be so interesting wouldn’t it. I have tried a few times to find someone, but no luck as yet unfortunately. I’ll definitely keep trying and if anyone reading this knows of someone, let me know!
