    Everyone should have to watch this before applying to PT school. I’m introverted and didn’t understand just how people-facing the profession is until I started doing clinicals. It’s negatively affected my mental health and I don’t see it changing until I figure out an exit strategy. For now I work in acute care. I can go hide in a stairwell for 10 minutes whenever I need to! It’s sustainable-ish for me for now.

As a personal trainer and potential future physical therapist who's also an introvert, I love interacting with people but it can be overstimulating and exhausting to do it for hours a day. I still love it but can see how it would wear someone out.

      I am sorry to hear about your mental health declining. I suggest you consider teaching at some point and look for an online program. This often has less personal interaction until intensives. You can also conduct clinical research if you find an area that you are passionate about. I rarely reply, but your comments are profound and I hope you find peace soon. Your wellness and health are paramount!

    As a DPT for decade, great points. Unfortunately I don’t see this changing in the field. Less autonomy given to us than we actually deserve. Different states don’t allow different things and it’s a shame. Main thing also is there is minimal to no progression in our field in salary. Until we get access to images, prescribing limited pain medication like the PT in the military does, I don’t see it happening. With those, ppl who get certified and get extra education should be allowed with increase pay.

    DPT's should be respected way more. I've bn to therapy twice, i must say the pt helped me out a lot more than the Dr. Did. He just prescribed me useless ibuprofen. The PT & PTA's actually helped me recover. With that said, i dont think this career field is worth it, unless you go PTA. its 2 years total, less than 10k, and decent pay in my area and the home health jobs are awesome (seems that way anyway). Do you need to be physically strong to be a physiotherapist? I'm very interested in this field but I'm not the strongest or sportiest person out there. I understand that one needs to be fit and healthy enough to lift or carry a patient but I can't even do push-ups... This is quite concerning to me.

    • @kristennicolosi
      @kristennicolosi  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      hi! you definitely don't have to be super strong or sporty, but it is beneficial to be active and especially having a strong upper body for manual therapy! Also just by doing the job every day your body will strengthen to what it needs. a lot of it comes from your core and using your body weight to assist. I hope this helps!

      As a student in my last year of PT school who is also an introvert, there is definitely 100% hope! I have found that my favorite part of PT is building relationships with patients, even though I am introverted and need to recharge with alone time! Yes, it can be a little more draining getting to know a patient at first, but once you've had a couple sessions with patients, that bond you can develop makes it much easier and more fulfilling. As long as you like people and have empathy, the extroverted part of it is something you can build up stamina for :) Hope this helps because I know I was nervous about this before starting PT school.

      What I can say is you don't have to start the conversation perse. Ask about their hobbies or the last movie they saw. You don't have to be afraid if you have nothing to share from your side. Any topic, what kind of home to they have, ranch style, stairs, etc. You can be a good PT unless you are completely afraid of talking to others.

    I think becoming a PTA is my only way of trying to get in opposition to DPT. I don't understand how PTA is 2 years and then the other option is DPT where you can do it in 2 years but then if you become a PTA in 2 years you can bridge to DPT for another 2 and a half years. So that's 4 and a half years to become a DPT after PTA school.
    I don't have a good GPA at all and will never get picked for the DPT program. That's why I'm shooting for PTA. Now I am in a DPT program at Hawaii Pacific University. I have been going to school for way too many years of my life, but I am proud of myself for never giving up and I really wanted to achieve the level of doctor. All of those are hard to get in. I too would like to have a Doctor degree but being 56 it's so hard to fall back into school to try to bump my GPA. It is what it is and that's it. I'm looking at Medical Technologist at my hospital. They put me on the list for the next entry program. It's almost 2 years with my BS degree. I might get in by early next year. I'm also taking certification programs online like coding and graphic design. Something I can afford to do at the time. I wish I can go to DPT but I know that the salary isn't worth the cost for me. I'm broke, really broke. I work at the hospital in the ER and on my days off I do Uber and Lyft to make extra money. I get depressed and sad watching these young techs at my job graduating nursing school and now they're telling me what to do. It's difficult for me because of my pride. I need to do something. My age is high but I look 10-20 years younger than others who are at my age. My family are dying for me to make better money and get out of this huge debt and live happy. did you ever consider OT? if you did, how did you decide between OT and PT?

    • @kristennicolosi
      @kristennicolosi  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wish I had considered it more! since I had a sports medicine background growing up in gymnastics, PT seemed like an easy decision. if you’re interested in neuro/inpatient settings I would 100% consider OT just as much so

    Do you enjoy your career ? Do you think it was the best choice for you ?

      overall, yes! I don't think I realized emotionally how tough it can be to deal with people and be "on" every second of the work day, but in the end I don't regret my decision and love my job :)

    good for you PTs, coz OSHA, CDC, and health state departments betrayed nurses during the pandemic by permitting the reuse of PPEs .
