For people wondering why these movies were made, let me enlighten you: Jodi's actress Ava Michelle used to be on a reality TV show called Dance Moms, where the crazy dance teacher Abby Lee Miller bullied her for being taller than the other dancers in her age group. This led to the creation of these terrible movies, despite the fact that she was bullied by a crazy woman and no-one sane actually cares that she's tall. So yeah.
that actually makes a lot of sense. though why couldn't they just make a movie about the struggles of being in a dance group while tall is beyond me i'd watch the hell out of that
She is attractive, intelligent, has great friends, a loving, caring family, and has several guys interested in her... But oh no! She's over six feet tall! How will she EVER get by! 🙄

15:40 just gotta mention. Any pianist would know that it’s not her fault and would instantly blame the person, who put the drink there in the first place. You don’t put food/drink on a piano - it’s practically a social standard among musicians/singers/owners/etc. lol
But at the same time, there is no one who respects their instruments LETS someone ruin it, make it worse by ruining the sheet music, and then APOLOGIZE?!?
@@leocrown8627 No it won't 'break' like it did in the movie (it sounded like someone smashed all the hammers inside). It might cause the wood to warp if the liquid seeps into it. Your keys might get sticky and/or mould will be able to grow inside the piano if you don't dry it properly. And you won't notice the damage until weeks later.
@@0SilentLeopard0 Yeah, unless it's a fake piano that has electronical keyboard. Or the liquid was highly corrosive and damaged the internal parts in few seconds.
Imagine not calling the sequel 'Taller Girl' and just having some taller girl come along and just frame some conflict around that. At least it'd show some self awareness.
When you're physically disabled, can hardly wipe your butt or shower, in constant pain, and then you remember a tall girl with lots of friends, pretty, and a normal life has it worse 😩😩
I find it shocking that a film, complaining about the struggles of being tall, didn't address any of the health issues that come with it. Me and my family are very tall so we often can't comfortably in most chairs without bending our knees out or having back and joint pains because you have to bend all the way down to cook or clean. Ironically the girl only complains about being judged and bullied for her height which in reality, being tall is liked and respected by others most of the time.
Strong agree. I was very tall at one point in my life (I had to have spinal surgery which ended up shrinking me) and I had a bunch of medical problems from it. Basically, I grew faster than my body could handle (that's an over-simplification, but it gets the gist across) and so my body was in a real bad place for a long time. This isn't a cry for sympathy - the various problems have been solved and I'm healthy now, but Tall Girl 2 could have had a good point. Basically, after Jodi gains acceptance, things start to go wrong with her health. The moral could be that just because something seems minor (how bad is being tall anyway?) doesn't mean it can't have larger issues behind the scenes. Issues that the average person might not consider. A lesson in empathy, in the fact that everyone has their own issues, and sometimes those issues CAN be serious.
I think what's really shocking isn't that this film didn't address those struggles, but that people have tried to make films about those struggles, and we as an audience preferred to watch this
Yeah very fucking weird. Literally every tall person I know is super popular and successful and always has been generally loved and popular throughout life. All of the most attractive girls I've had relationships with were tall. Tall girls are so attractive that I can't even take short girls seriously anymore.
as a 6'0 girl, ive literally never been bullied for being tall lmao. most people are just like "wow, you're pretty tall!" then ask if i play any sports
As a tall person, I can effectively confirm that nobody was ever bullied because they were tall. This is in fact a brilliant sci-fi movie happening in a parallel universe
I have a very rare form of dwarfism where I shrunk really fast in the other direction. I am now 6,9 and a literal god. All of my friends love me. Even if they're all imaginary.
@@sauce9401 tall can become a potential disability if one is too tall for their own good. But the girl in this movie isn’t even that tall to be considered disabled lmfao.
What if Tall Girl 3 is about her realizing everything we saw in the films were severe delusions and hallucinations she had while in a mental hospital and characters were other patients and nurses she’s fit into her delusion.
As a tall person, I can confirm that bullying someone for being tall is infrequent, but more common among girls than guys. However this seems like such a strange problem to base an entire movie around, and reeks of middle-class privilege and out-of-touch thinking. Also I would date a girl over six feet tall.
Exactly what I was thinking. Sure, it might be an insecurity for some people but most likely not something that's extreme enough or serious enough to get a fucking movie.
@@25VolarSleet I understand the coming-of-age themes and what looks like a commentary on the importance of accepting people who are different, but judging by the reviews it seems that message was poorly executed
I think they did better here by just making it normal insecurity, rather than focusing specifically on height. The first movie, ESPECIALLY the opening narration, felt really goofy for treating it like the worst thing ever. It matter but it feels so off when she explains discrimination to her black friend because she's 6'1". Also 6'1" isn't even that tall for a girl, at least as I've seen, so the perspectives they used to make her a giant just made the whole thing feel even more goofy. I think in any case both movies meant well and didn't do anything seriously bad, just meh coming of age stories for teen girls. It's okay.
I feel like Tall Girl is such a missed opportunity to do a rewarding emotional deep-dive into the distress of not being happy with your own body. The fact that the guy is shorter than average could've even been an opportunity to explore the mirrored issue of prejudice against short men. Unfortunately they settled for a fairly light-hearted comedy.
As someone who deals with high anxiety and did theater both amateur and professional, the way ther "voices" leave when she gets on stage is actually something I experienced. It's called the mask of glass, and basically totally embrassing a character so much that nothing from the real you is shown. When I acted, I was so focused on my character (which is not me) that all my anxiety diseapeared as I played, and yes it comes back after the euphoria of the play fades out. It's a thechnique I still use today for presentation, acting as if I was someone else so my anxiety go away.
@@spidey5558 for me it's a good thing but when you mess up 1 time and you remember that you are you which is in your head is a "no good dumbass" you'll have the voices again but louder welp that's what i experience
there's an old comic called Glass Mask that's about a girl with wonderful innate stage talent struggling to make it into the theater and entertainment world. the title comes from the same idea! to totally embody the character. it's got that cheesy 70s shoujo goodness but isnt overwrought, just really entertaining!
Literally the only downside to being tall in this movie is people randomly saying “how’s the weather up there” and the main character being annoyed about being tall.
@Only1CookieMan it didn't help that one of her first lines in the first movie was: "You think your life is hard?" Which only comes off as incredibly arrogant and entitled, especially for people with actual serious problems watching this or even people who suffered more serious bullying during school. She's not wrong at all when she said that the fact that there were much worse problems than being tall out there don't invalidate her own suffering, but they never show her suffering anything other than being called ridiculous names and being pranked once, all the while having a million things going her way. Neither of these movies tried to show the actual bad sides of being tall, like any of your examples, just the most unrealistic bullying ever that doesn't even make sense at the end of the day because she was not even that much taller than everyone else in the school, and you just had to look at the background characters for five seconds to figure that out.
So let me get this straight, Netflix threw a ton of money at something that no-one asked for, and patted themselves on the back for a job well done, yet a series like, shall we say, Santa Clarita Diet, which even Drew Barrymore said herself she'd love to come back and finish, and people wanted, they say "no no, cancel that one, we've got bloody Tall girl 2 to fund!"
i know its been axed for a long time now, but having watched pyro's 8-hour doc twice, that brief joking mention of what could have been a utopia s3 being turned into this tripe felt like my nutsack got torn off
OMG, I loved that show. I was literally just talking about how Netflix always starts great shows, and just dumps em in the trash with someone a little bit ago. They really don't have any shame.
Juat like Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, canned after season 1. And I Am Not Okay With This, also canned after season 1. And I'm STILL waiting for new Derry Girls, but I guess that's never coming either.
I'll never understand why people would bully a person thats like 2 times their size I'd be f*cking terrified to be on their bad side - they'll just pick you up with little effort and use their height and weight to crush you
There's an actual scene from a show where a guy picks on a boy who is probably 2 times his size and the tall boy gets fed up and literally picks him up with one arm it's pretty funny and I could tell they were jabbing at tall girl with that joke
The third film should be how Jodie copes with the loss of her legs after a car mercilessly drove into her as she went to help an injured person who was on the floor. Maybe they could even have her write a book on the struggles of no longer being a "tall girl" and instead a "paraplegic girl", maybe she even envisions her friends as deformed monsters due to her having to now be below them as she's no longer "tall girl"
Then another sequel in which she loses the ability to hear and feel and the story revolves purely around her tragic life, that would be good 👍 Edit: im not joking
The voices thing was a weird addition. It feels like they were trying to replicate intrusive thoughts, and as someone with them as an effect of OCD, the fact that they randomly go away would be a dream. Hon the only way to reduce em is to medicate lmao, and even then it just makes em easier to deal with.

Theory: Kimmy has psychic powers and she was the one putting this voice in Jodie's head all along. The voice literally said Kimmy would play the lead. That would also explain why this voice is being so sassy, since Kimmy is The Mean Girl (TM). She turned around and stopped hating Jodie, but the power slipped out of her control a little. She felt bad so she started helping her out On a more serious note, anxiety can make you quite irrational. They could have made this movie about how even when on top, you still experience anxiety and still have to fight your demons. I think this is what they were going for, just the writing was less than competent
This movie is basically just about Jodies decent into schizophrenia at this point. They could make a twist in a third movie about how all the events of the movies were ,in reality, only in her head, and now she's snapped back out of her psychosis and has to deal with her mental state while trying to figure out what is real and what is not _(maybe Stig was just a figment of her imagination to put all the hate from the bullying on to get a sense of controll)._ It would've been a cool curveball in _this_ movie, but we didn't get that, so here's hoping for the next one!

It's actually even weirder, considering that in order to be a runway model you have to be AT LEAST 5'9(175cm) tall. The faces of beauty are exactly her height.
That dosen't translate to real life though. Some people have weird hang up about gender roles with women being taller than men, some tall women are insecure about "looking like a man". The worst thing about this movie and the previous one is that they're trying to imply that a girl being 5'11 is freakish and extraordinary and they do this by casting only shorter people and by angling the camera to make her look like a giant. I have scoliosis, I have to wear a literal plastic tube that covers my whole torso 16 hours a day, even when I sleep. And I’d genuinely be insulted if someone made a movie about me with people going through so much worse things than me. Just like this movie protagonist, I have friends, family, house, food and education. There are people who have none of that. It is honestly a disgrace to me that some people dare to make a movie about someone suffering such a minor issue, AND making it look like it was such a big one just because it could make some money. Actually insulting.
You know, they probably could've used Jodie's character development to show an over-correction where she screws everything up. Even if poorly done it's better than repeating the last movie but worse.
Another interesting thing they could have done (assuming its not brought up in the movie, i'm not gonna watch it) is the friend group realizing that they could tell Sig to go away without being aggressive about it. Like, the one girl makes jokes about him being Swedish a couple times. they weren't exactly super offensive but its kind of weird to have a movie that goes "bullies bad, don't make fun of people for things they can't control" and then "haha, bad person is Swedish" The movie really needed to make up its mind on what story it wanted to tell and it didn't. Like, am i supposed to feel bad for these people or am i not.

I like how the movie is about a 'Tall Girl' being bullied and how she can't get a date because of being so tall, when in reality, tall people are generally considered intimidating by others and some guys actually prefers dating tall women in their lives, as proven by Lady Dimitrescu's fandom... yeah...
Admittedly that was the first movie. In this one, her being tall seems to no longer be central to anything. So on one hand...while it's still a retread of the first movie in every other way, it's no longer about tall = bad. It's now just about Jody = insecure about everything else in her life now.
I think the blur effect was there because it was the first time we heard the voices while seeing from her perspective. It's meant to symbolise how reality seems to warp in front of her, as she starts to doubt herself. Or maybe I'm giving the movie way too much credit

14:21 As a gymnast, I thought I should add that tall people aren't necessarily less coordinated, but it is typically harder for them to do task that involve acrobatics or precision movement. I have seen so many tall people come into the gym for lessons and within a few weeks they quit with how far they get behind. I'm not sure on the science behind it, but it has gotten to the point that we start making bets when we see a taller person come in. Of course, there are outliers, but, based off of what I've seen, this line seems to be accurate.
Taller people, while they work just as hard, tend to take longer to show gym results than shorter individuals, which in turn, gives a negative response to the person…and thus, they stop going.
Now I’m not the tallest person ever, 5’7”, but I was a gymnast since a child till about 15-16. My sister, 5’1”-5’2”, was also a gymnast for the same time as me. Even at my height I was taller than all the girls in the gym and it was tough on the bars but I was okay on floor/vault. I don’t think a piano would cease to play notes if it just had some liquid spilled on the keys. I’d think it would only cause the keys to stick if it was a sugary drink but besides that, I’m pretty sure the piano should have still played notes.
I’m the movies defense, there are a lot of instruments that could be. And even piano, it could cause mold, which is not good. It’s generally safest to keep any liquids away from instruments. For example, harmonicas are damaged by water, because it damages the reeds. And saxophone and other woodwinds are susceptible because it can get rid of the padding on the keys, stopping them from blocking air properly. It’s generally safe to assume an instrument and water don’t mix. Although it’s true that a piano wouldn’t break from just a water bottle. Although it’s still best to keep liquids out and make sure to dry it off, and sticky liquids could cause problems.

So yeah.
My mum used to watch the shit out of dance moms, I never clocked it was her lmao

As someone who hears/heard voices, I find some of this movie kind of strange. To me, what Jody is hearing just sounds like negative internal monologue, even though it's in being said from a different perspective. Many people deal with that and I guess it's nice to see that represented in media but I think that some people don't understand the difference between internal monologue, actual voices, and schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is not internal monologue. This isn't to like sound mean or anything I j wanna let people know
No, you make a great point. It seems more like the voice is just her self-doubt, something I deal with all the time. Just the voice of the part of yourself that doesn't think you're good enough. From what I've read, Schizophrenia is *WAY* different, right?

Height is an attractive trait
