Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over seven years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
Oh ma gawd, that review is stellar! Calling your book "necessary" (amidst the various other positive adjectives), is just about the highest praise I can think of for a book. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Seriously, ypu even type in thug language? Your teachers must be so proud.
I understand completely regarding the weather. I grew up in MI and spent 18 years in AZ. I have recently moved back “home” to MI. I’m back with family and life long friends. I have realized I love AZ and the weather but MI is where my home and my heart are.
I’m guessing that MI is the place they will pick if they just stay in one place. But we shall see … 😘🇨🇦
I moved back to MI last year after spending 7 years in FL and a year and a half in IN. I know what you mean!
I may be doing that in a few years myself. Been in FL for almost 9 years. Almost no decent connections. All my friends are still mostly back in the mitten.
I live near Big Rapids MI. , I'm retirement age, I would love to move somewhere warm......hubby dosent like change. Lol
@@Saranewberry0599 I truly understand that. 🥰
I totally understand about the challenges of living in two places. And the benefits- I’ve accepted I’m half migrating bird and half cat. The bird loves to fly south. The cat wants stability and sameness. I’ve accepted it’s bumpy when I’m in the transition and then I settle in and yes then I don’t want to leave- anger years of doing this in compassionate with the process- blessings on your journey 🩷🪷
Haven’t been following for a bit..but just wanted to say that both of you look really great. Healthy, happy and beautiful. So happy about the audiobook deal. Can’t wait for the release. Best of the best for the both of you!
I live in Newport Beach (50 miles away) and probably will never run into you guys, but I love the feeling when you are in California. But you know what, I like the stories from where you are now too! Really makes it interesting when you change it up or travel! Enjoy you so much wherever you are!
I’ve lived in MN my whole life and I love it here and would never move. The cold, snow and ice are not easy on the average person, so I couldn’t imagine navigating it in Shane’s condition. Hopefully you find a permanent spot soon!
Congrats on the audio book! I love the way you guys talk things out. You’re both very intelligent, and excellent communicators. No relationship is perfect, but I think communication is huge. You guys got it figured out. Love you both!
I’m so excited for your book! Congratulations!!!! We live in the Utah desert. It’s a half an hour away from where I grew up. There’s a warmer part of Utah that my grandparents lived, but I do like the snow sometimes. I don’t do well in the cold either. We thankfully get all 4 seasons here. It’s not densely populated. It’s got a lot of tourist destinations within minutes of our house. We have deer in our yard daily which I absolutely love. It’s very peaceful here and it’s right up against the mountains. I can’t do a ton of people. I love the quiet. There are so many beautiful places everywhere. The important thing is if you’re happy in your home and it feels like home, that’s home. Hannah, your hair looks amazing! Best wishes to you both ❤
Love you're hair Hannah! Shane you have inspired me to keep going after multiple spine surgery's. Every time I want to give up you and Hannah keep me going. God bless you inspire so many.
Love your hair Hannah!
That's not Hannah it's an alien shapeshifter
@@ThisIsNotAHairOnYourScreenmummy needs her ph back
What are you babbling
Yes Minnesota is cold! I’ve lived here all my life,I’d love to move but hubby will not,so I guess we’re staying here, lol! This came up on my feed today. I hope you are still in Minnesota and safe from the horrible fires. Love your channel.
Congrats on your stellar book review. I'm sure it's warranted and will be echoed by other reviewers and readers.
October has been warm and beautiful here in Minnesota this year!
October usually is.
@@cplmpcocptcl6306 True but 80 degrees is not the norm.
San Diego will gladly welcome you too. It is beautiful
I pre ordered the audibook and i cannot wait to listen/read it! Congrats u guys and i agree, the book would not be the same without your guys voices!
Shane and Hannah, I’ve already pre-ordered my audiobook. I can’t wait.
I got chills when Hanna read the review.
Leave. Problem solved 😌
I recently found your book in a little library close to my house…I’m so excited to read it!
I'm so excited to get your new book! I get not wanting to be in the cold but LA is hit and miss on safety and great weather. Our electrical grid is the pits.(we had a power outage on Sunday and it was out for hours!) Hope your neighborhood is a safe one!
Please come spend time in Naples, FL during the winter months! It will be beautiful during this time!
You just need to go 20 minutes west into Ventura County and it’s much calmer but you’re still close to everything.
Santa Barbara is worth the extra driving.
I can vogue for this. I'm from Ventura, CA. It's way less stressful--substantially. I love LA so much, but it is quite a lot.
Lol
OMGosh!! What a wonderful review!! And totally deserved if I might add. And the "Cheeky banter" is perfect!! A bit of a polite understatement of Shane, however true enough. Congratulations to both of you! You do make quite a team. I also agree that it is so much more meaningful hearing your voices, not someone else's voice. After all, it is't like you don't have fans who know your voice!!
Shane, I love the way Hannah looks at you like the sun shines out of you, which, of course, it does😊. Instead of spending half the year in LA, why don't you just visit different warmer places for shorter periods here and there in winter to break up the cold season?
Might be hard to find wheelchair friendly houses in a good location. They may have had to look for a while to find their place in LA, then having to research rentals that are accessible for short periods in good locations is probably time consuming id think?
Your love, friendship, commitment, couplehood, humor, adventurist spirits, homebody cozy, is just so glorious. ❤
You are so privileged!!!! Two homes!!! Travel!!! WOW what a life!
It's just choices in what people spend their time and money on
@OceanMomma10 many will never have a life like that...,.not even the choice
It's not a privilege when ypu work hard to earn. Only losers , and criminals call hard workers privileged.
Hearing Squirmy and Grubs being described as sophisticated made me laugh out loud 😂 on a serious note, congratulations Shane and Hannah! I’m so incredibly excited!!!
Congratulations on your glowing review! That’s really something to celebrate 🎉 Best wishes for your transition back to
L.A. 🙏🏼 Transitions are challenging, I hear you on that!
Congratulations on the book and the audiobook read by you two 📚 😊
I came across your channel recently by watching Roll with Cole & Charisma. You guys are awesome. Congratulations on your book and the wonderful first review. I can't wait to get the audio version.
Come back to Minnesota we love you guys!!!
I enjoy your channel and look forward to catching up on all of your posts. My favorites so far are the make up skit where Hannah is in the sheet and the skit about the snack food. I can’t recall the name of either but they were hilarious. I laughed till I cried! I can see you both creating a mystery series you have the most amazing sense of fun and thank you for sharing the wonderful life you are creating. together and your fun adventures.
Minnesota winters the last 2 years have been so easy I hope it stays this way and you guys move back!
I totally get it! I lived in San Jose for 55 years then moved to MN ( life is strange) Blooming Prairie, MN.
Maybe Northern CA for you guys??? LA is way too faaaaast. When I visit my son who lives there, I get anxiety. Thats when I want to go back to my small town (I’m 75 miles south from you guys)
I live in N.D. and what I've done is during the " lean" and " moody" months, is to make my home a sanctuary. I find that lighting helps. String lights, cozy lights, and whatever speaks to you're soul. You just get nestled in and relax. It's like in the cave days, imagine being safe and sound while the world outside does it's thing. I don't know if I explained that well. Hopefully, you know what I mean.😊😊
I can’t wait to read your new book and Shane, I would love to be in a book club with you.
I'm totally with Shane on the moving vs planned thing! Also the packing and unpacking takes forever unless you have a copy of most things you need in both places!
I think you found your first book to review for your new book club Shane! You can suprise them all at the end by introducing yourself as the author ;-) In regards to the new mics.... they are AWESOME. I was actually wondering what microphones you guys were using in this video becuase the sound was so good! Def keep using them! Thanks for the update re: LA. I have been wondering what is happening as you guys haven't been posting as regularly as usual and your more recent videos have been focussed more on collabs with C&C rather than the usual life updates. So this video definitely helps explain it all :) Can't wait for the audiobook!!
Congratulations on the great book review. I'm so proud of you both! ❤
Thank you so much!
Hooray!! Loved hearing the review- congratulations! Also, i have been seriously considering the purchase of a second home down south, to be near my daughter, & to escape the northern winter for 4 to 6 months, and to enjoy a city vs rural/ suburban lifestyle. Listening to your comments regarding the stress of the twice yearly move and worrying about the " other home" when you are away, is making me rethink that plan! I think what i really need is a transporter! Beam me up, Scotty!❤
ah! This is great!!! I will definitely be buying this book! and any other book you both write!!!! Thank you for being so open and informative about how to navigate the world!
I pre-ordered the audiobook when you guys first announced It and I can’t wait. I think I’ve said this before but I’m so excited that you’re reading it. It’s gonna be awesome! I’m not at all surprised The glowing review from publishers weekly I would expect nothing less 😊
The new microphones sound really good, honestly, and are less intrusive than the Røde mics. The sound is pretty much on par, so good choice. Glad to hear you are heading to warmer climes for the winter again. I hope that there is less confusion than the first time you were to your home there. Congratulations on the book review! That was very positive, and no condescension in the tone at all, and Hannah gets her first-time authorship recognized at the same time. Safe journey back to L.A., looking forward to the next video.
With Shane reading the audiobook it will come across the way you meant it when you wrote it. I can’t listen to audiobooks because they aren’t read with the same emphasis as I interpreted when I read it.
Congratulations on the book!!😊
Congratulations on the book guys! I can't wait to read it in January. Hannah I love the hair it looks so good! Any style would look good on you you're a beautiful person. Love your channel and look forward to your videos. I loved your video when you were visiting Madison. My parents&brother live there&my husband and I live 45 minutes southeast in Fort Atkinson. My parents are huge supporters of Spring Green's American Players Theater,it's one of there favorite places in the world. My mom is also disabled in a wheelchair and still enjoys going. They always picnic before the play as well. Just thought I would throw that in there 😂 love you guys, have a safe trip back to California❤❤❤
Look at Naples, Florida. You would love it. Lots of people from Minnesota here.
And so are hurricanes
Yay for the glowing book review! I pre-ordered my copy. Hugs from Southern California.
Thanks for the update! I pre-ordered my book awhile ago. I can’t wait to read it. I hope you get lots of sales. ❤
Happy Belated Birthday Aisa! Oooohhhh you got the popular Empire bag. Congratulations! I love the Merlot color, just a classy bag for a classy lady!!! XOXO
That is an awesome book review! Congratulations 🎉
The new mics sound great!
I cant wait till the audio book is out
You two are amazing! I love the way you interact with one another. What a journey it has been following you. I hope your book is a HUGE success. You always CRACK me up! I laughed out loud - Literally as you two plugged the book via quoting your RAVE review (subliminal messaging😉): "It's NECESSARY to read it, it's Necessary . . . I mean, you CAN'T NOT buy it - it's N.E.C.E.S.S.A.R.Y." 🤣 You got me at "NECESSARY!" 🥰ORDERED!!!🥰
I honestly love your content
Sound is great! 👍 to the new mics.
I live in England and have SMA, and sometimes I don't leave the house for months lol. I hate being cold
congratulations on the book review!! :D
I'm with shame about the moving thing for the most part.
I think the only way I could split my time between two houses would be to have 2 of everything so I wouldn't have to pack it all and lug it back and forth XD
I disagree about 50 degree weather being cold though, as long as it's not below 40 dgrees I'm happy. Its the heat that gets me!
Congrats on your upcoming book and great review!
I’m sure I missed this in a past video but is Junkyard Mayhem ever coming back?
I can see why you wouldn’t want to split time, I couldn’t do it. In defense of LA though, I have to say that there are many suburban areas that don’t have crime issues and feel more like a small town. Congratulations on the audio reading, I’ll definitely be looking out for the publishing of that cheeky banter! ❤️
Do a happy medium Use L.A as a vacation get away in the winter. It may help you enjoy it better. And P.S you should come to Maine. And take Shane to Mount Desert Island and Moose head lake
As someone who has lived in Maine my whole 40 plus years, there tons of hidden gems that makes Maine a good place to llive
You would love the Folsom/ El Dorado Hills area. Close to Sacramento. Very close to Lake Tahoe and loads of beautiful wineries.
Home prices are a lot less than LA or Bay Area. People are friendly and good medical care at UC Davies hospital and others.
The winters are fairly cold but no snow or ice. The summers can be hot but no humidity. Definitely not as hot as Las Vegas Nevada and Phoenix Arizona.
Yay audiobook! 🎉
Congratulations on your book review!!
I hope you ultimately stay in Minnesota so that selfishly I could run into you guys one day. I drive 1.5 hours just to meet Dawn from The Minimal Mom and I'm not above driving that far, or further, for you....prefilled with weeks of anxiety about making a damn fool of myself fan girling. Hope you have a book tour with dates coming up!
That review is awesome! Can't wait to read the book 🎉
Yay! Thank you!
I've been away because fcptsd reasons and it is just awesome seeing two adorable people coupling...btw DFTBA - Don't Forget To Be Awesome much love from Nerdfighteria, with every fault in my star
As someone who splits my time between two states with a toddler, I agree that it is hard and not for everyone. Not gonna complain because not everyone has the ability to do this, and it allows us to spend time with both families. But, I find it takes an entire month to get re-settled each time we switch, especially with a little who needs routine, and we have been going back twice a year so my little doesn't forget the other side of the family (not to mention still flies free), so sometimes we only have a couple months before we turn around again! I am hopeful for a longer, once a year stint once she gets older.
Congratulations guys! I can’t wait to read your book!
My disabled son lives in downtown LA and loves it. So much to do, concerts, museums, events all the time. Yes, LA has its problems, but so does every other major city. I (mom) prefer the quieter suburbs of LA but there is still a lot to do. Going south is a little warmer. Inland gets downright hot in the summer and chilly in winter. Coastal areas are more moderate. Good luck to you!
Small areas have negative issues as well.
Love the gorgeous hair cut. Come baaaaack to MN !!!!!!! Permanently
Also so much congratulations on the great an well deserved review. Also really glad that this is for 12 and up because it’s so important for kids (middle school and up) to learn and hear more about these types of inter-abled relationships. And you both are such excellent role models for kids and adults alike.
Love the two of you.
Ahhh Shane you look like a Proud Father ❤❤❤❤❤😊 as Hannah reads 😊😊😊😊😊
The thing you did with your voice going up and down is called a siren Hannah, we do it in singing rehearsals to warm our voices up. Yes water is going to definitely be your friend.
We live between CT and NY. We have two sets of everything so we aren’t dragging everything back and forth. I carry a bag for medication and that’s about it.
congrats on the glowing book review!! happy for you guys!!
Hey Shane why don't you start your OWN book club? I THINK YOU'D HAVE A HUGE FOLLOWING! AND THEN YOU CAN RUN IT THE WAY YOU WANT TO RUN IT AND YOU'LL HAVE LOTS OF FRIENDS! AND HANNAH...I LOVE YOUR HAIR! I LOVE THE NEW DO!!
Settle down wtf? Lmfao
We just moved back to Minnesota after living in Colorado for 8 years. Our family is here and we realized how much we missed it, and the dry desert and heat in Colorado was just too much. I totally get it ❤
Hannah’s “oh” when Shane said he wanted to join an in person book club to meet new people is so me. 😂
Congrats on the great review. Sounds like you wrote like you tell the stories that draw us.
I understand completely about wanting to live in a community that has your back. Living somewhere where you can count on your neighbors to follow the law is very nice. I moved from Boise, ID to Eugene, OR and although the winters here are milder, I do miss that. Hopefully LA is more chill this winter. Congratulations on the book!
LA has tons of book clubs! And meetups ❤
Hannah is right, hating when plans change is not”going with the flow”. I had already forgotten I’d preordered your book. I’m sure I’ll be surprised when it arrives.
You couldn’t pay me to live in LA ! I live in NWIowa and have for 74 yrs ! I love the changing seasons.
I grew up in LA. I loved it. I live elsewhere now, but I do miss LA.
Congrats on your book guys and kudos on the good review! YAY! ✌❤
😀😀 Congrats you two for the excellent book review! You deserve it. Keep up the good work!
I concur that living in two places is stressful. I live between New England and New Orleans (same seasonal thing). I don't pack everything I own when I move so inevitability there is something I want that is not in the place I am at the time of the wanting. People have told me to just duplicate everything...I find that thought depressing and excessive... so I haven't duplicated and suffer through not having everything in each place...
Looking forward to seeing you back in Mn next summer!
In-person book club, Wouldn't it be lovely?
Looking forward to the book!😀
Its called being a snowbird. Many split their year due to weather conditions. You can still plan ahead. Many live this way. Families learn . its whatever is good for you. Things will happen no matter where you are or when you are there. All that really matters is how your health is affected.
Noone has any doubts it was snowbirds. Lol sit back down, wtf is wrong with you. Lmfao...unfuckingbelievable
Can’t wait to read your book! Preordered ✅
Great review congratulations love ur videos lo❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Move to Ventura County instead of LA… super safe , quiet and beautiful area just outside of LA. Easy commute to the studios
Congratulations!❤
Congrats guys can’t wait to read it
Amazing review, congrats!!!
I just pre-ordered the audiobook on Amazon. Love you guys.
Love your show.
You cut your hair, Hannah! I love it! Hi Shane!
