Great interview! Several years ago, after my late husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which after surgeries, left him disabled. I took care of him and I can tell you, that I would do it all again. I felt that I was the lucky one to get to take care of and help him through this challenging time in his life. Anything I could do to make it easier for him. Wish I was still helping him…..

I love Shane and Hannah. I accidentally found their channel. It was a suggested channel from youtube. I clicked on it curious about how about them and their relationship. It was a video about people sending them hate emails and saying they were fake. I got hooked. I went back to their 1st video. Watching the videos fir 3 weeks. To catch up to where I 1st watched. Now I'm a member of their channel and watch every new video and read every new vlog by Shane.

Speaking from experience as a direct support professional. It isn’t so much the meager wages, it is the fact the companies that employ us are so money hungry that they work us to death, treat us like we are children, do not protect us (from violent recipients in our care), and the list goes on and on. 9 out of 10 times, is the employer that burns us out. NOT the person needing care. 😭😭😭😭

This is disgusting. A company born from the idea of helping people can't see the forest for the trees. This only proves the old adage, you don't quite the job you quite the employer!

Hopefully, some day, you will see this comment, and it will add to your heart. Watching your videos has added to my heart so much love, and I appreciate you both for all you do for so many people. For a practical sense of what ableism is... Just read the majority of these comments... I think the comments have proven Shane and Hannah's point. Their relationship is pretty similar to mine, I can't cook, I'm not particularly good at cleaning, but I am good at organising appointments, making phone calls, dealing with finances, and general admin stuff. So, my wife does the majority of the cooking cleaning, and I do the other stuff. Also, every morning my wife wakes me up with a coffee because I'm rubbish at waking up.. every .single..morning.. sometimes if I've had a bad day, she will take my clothes off me and put my pyjamas on. I'm not disabled, I'm just rubbish at the things my wife is awesome at... and vice versa. So their relationship makes sense.
I've watched their channel for a few years now, and I'm always reading in their comments about "How the relationship isn't real because...(insert offensive assumption).. or how Hannah is only with him because of his money. Shane has a brilliant sense of humour, he has a way of making people feel comfortable when talking about uncomfortable things. Hannah has a great tolerance for Shane's (sometimes) terrible jokes, she is a kind and calming person. They make a brilliant couple, I'm sure they have issues like any other couple. I don't care how much money they have or don't have, I don't care about what Hannah should or shouldn't be doing in the relationship. They entertain me, which is why I watch TH-cam, to be entertained. I just wish people would realise, if you don't like their content.. DON'T WATCH IT!

I subscribed to Shane & Hannah's channel ages ago for their delightfully absurdist deadpan humor :D, but I've so appreciated learning about disability and accessibility through their videos, and getting to relate their experiences to mine. As you guys discuss, it seems obvious when you really think about it that when someone you care about needs support or assistance, the prudish boundaries we set for ourselves as a society become pretty inconsequential. And, I could not agree more: there are far more valuable things to a partnership than the ability to boldly produce a bat anytime a loud creek suddenly resonates throughout your home at 3am :P (Or... a bike helmet, in my partner's case... a decision I really should have questioned a bit more at the time 😅).

What's absolutely great and I'm talking about country wise, the USA is a country that a disabled person has the opportunity to advance. Colleges are geared for disability students these days. Both of you are right in the fact that most people are ignorant of the facts of the disability World. A great many people aren't around disabled folks. I think it scares some people, too. Not know what to say or do. That's why Hannah and Shane doing the videos, sheds light on their living style and how they go about it. There are people are educated enough to see the value of a person beyond their disability. Hannah has seen emotional, educational and understanding with Shane. They just click together. She enjoys his company, and she doesn't mind taking care of Shane. The marriage went hand in hand with their feelings for one another and it was a mutual decision for the marriage. Plus being married made it legal from the standpoint of a person giving care to a man with a disability. Marriage made it ideal for the situation and the fact that they love each other, too. Hannah and Shane, you've education us time and time again with your videos and I myself thank you. Sometimes I feel that I know you both. Kind of like watching a reality show, and you can't wait till the next episode. Enjoy keeping us informed. Glad to have the opportunity to watch both of you progress. I find their downplaying of survivorships bias very frustrating. The truth is that the majority of human population is currently reticent about forming romantic relationships with disabled people. I'm disabled myself. I've talked with numerous other people. People like Shane and the few other disabled partners from these online interabled relationships are the exceptions. The majority of disabled people can't find long-lasting relationships. There are statistics about this. Call it ableism, call it an evolutionary trait, or whatever else you might want to call it, but most people seek able-bodied partners in order to have able-bodied offspring. By constantly acting surprised that the majority of people find the relationship between a disabled person and an able-bodied person unusual you're giving false hopes to those disabled people who are not able to find a partner and end up thinking "what's wrong with me? if this person on TH-cam makes finding an able-bodied partner so easy, why can't I do it?"
And another thing, Shane and Hannah claim that they try to educate people in an attempt to eliminate ableism. I don't think the right approach to achieving that goal is through sarcasm and acid criticism of ableist behaviors that stem from people's ignorance. Like how at 14:20 Hanna calls a Christian woman's Bible-based beliefs in supernatural healing "terrible stuff". That's offensive to many Christians. You're more likely to make people listen to you and reconsider their behaviors by explaining to them in a reasonable manner why their behavior bothers you than by making online videos in which you recount their behavior and insult their beliefs.

    • @slcncr
      @slcncr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Talking about that loudly praying woman in the restaurant:
WHAT kind of a behavior is that ?? First: she touched him without even asking him if that´s ok, she entered his private space without
even caring if that could make him feel very uncomfortable. SHE stepped over a line, big time.
Second: The LOUD praying. What kind of a rude nonsense is that, in front of the whole restaurant ?
She clearly lacks civilized manners, forcing her devout submission under that "higher power" up in the sky unto others, the whole room in fact.
I personally would have been VERY annoyed by that behavior. Some of these devout believers can be a real pain in the ...
What about the ( growing number of ) people who do NOT believe in that "god" or any gods at all ? Doesn´t seem to worry her at all.
Oh, and btw: when you are thinking that Hannah`s mentioning of the story could be offensive to many Christians, so effing WHAT ?
As if feeling offended was even an argument. It isn´t. Now let´s try and think logically and critically about that praying attack:
There is NO "supernatural healing". None. Prayer doesn´t do anything or help anyone. Praying is talking to yourself, in your head.
Praying is pretending or wanting to help someone while actually doing nothing. Why do i think that way ?
In the entire history of humanity, out of all the billions of people that have ever lived on this planet or are currently living,
NOT ONE single person has ever come up with any verifiable evidence for the existence of a "god". This "god" has NEVER been proven to exist.
"God" is an idea, a concept, invented by humans to control people and keep them in fear. A placeholder for things we don´t yet understand.
All the so called "holy books" are the claim, not the evidence. And ALL of them have been written by humans.
That "Jesus", who has also never been proven to exist, hasn´t written even ONE word in the bible. His followers did. The entire collection
of books that sums up as the "bible" is completely based on hearsay, has been edited and translated and altered and edited and translated
numerous times, over hundreds of years.
And even IF that woman in the restaurant believes so strongly in the creation of all humans by her "god", he must have "created" Shane too.
With his disability. And now she comes along, praying loudly to that "god", demanding that he fixes and heals Shane ?
SHE wants to change "god´s plan" ? Seems a little arrogant to me. And also very offensive towards Shane and Hannah.

I'm disabled myself and teach disability studies. I'm also married. I think there is some grey area here. You're right that getting into a relationship isn't easy for all of us and there are a lot of factors. That frustration makes sense. But Shane has never said that it was easy for everyone or even easy for him. We do not know what his history was like before Hannah, I'd argue there is nothing wrong with showing such relationships are possible, especially since people assume that disabled people don't date or have sex drives. And there are people who will get confidence from this to find relationships if they want them. Nobody can educate about everything at once. Shane and Hannah can't represent every struggle. And they are humans who won't be able to treat all rudeness with kindness. If you want other kinds of examples, be that person.
