I would add that ANY one with food poisoning should go to the ER, not just someone who has additional health concerns. As you know, depending on the poison, it can be deadly and get very bad very quickly.
Extreme dehydration is a medical emergency. If anyone reading this is ever dealing with extreme dehydration due to throwing up a lot, being lost in the desert for too long (edited note: you'd need to get out of the desert via finding your way or getting rescued), pregnancy complication, etc... please go to the hospital as needed.
@@adenshures6573I too had the same question.😂😂 I’m guessing the commenter meant the civilized desert, like Palm Springs or somewhere. You know if your muscles were so weak, your heart is a muscle and it could have gotten to weak to beat. You should have gone to the hospital right away. You needed IV fluids and IV nausea medicine. @@suzanne529 this is true, but, just pointing out that Shane’s heart wouldn’t weaken like his skeletal muscles because cardiac muscle is not affected by SMA

Others have chimed in about this, but if this ever happens again, someone needs to call 911 right away regardless of whether or not Shane wants to go. Considering his medical situation, they could've gotten an IV into him immediately to at least ensure he wasn't dehydrated. He just doesn't have the same bandwidth to withstand this sort of thing that most of us could just power through. For him, it's an emergency.
This is really an emergency for anyone. If a person is throwing up constantly for any length of time and can't keep *any* fluids down it's very dangerous even if they do not have confounding medical conditions. Most people resist going but it has the potential to turn out very very badly, very quickly.
@@ayasha89games66 I've had severe dehydration (volume loss), unable to stand, and had to be carried out of the house and taken by ambulance to the hospital -- and they definitely got a needle into me to provide IV fluids. I was there when it happened.
1. It's almost impossible to get an IV into his tiny veins. 2. If Shane didn't want to go that's his decision. You can try and talk him into it but you don't get to force disabled people to do what they don't want to do.
I had to force my Dad to go to the ER by ambulance last week. They said they did not need to take him, it was up to us. He did not want to go. He (eventually) did. Because I tossed my weight around. Never so happy I did. We learned from the ER that he was septic and in active (recoverable) kidney failure. He’s currently an in-patient and is still getting IV antibiotics and fluids, but he’s now getting better (7 days later) but he has at least another week of hospital recovery. Your title struck a very timely close to home. So glad you’re doing better, Shane! 💕 from 🇨🇦 to you both!
I’m so sorry to hear your dad was that ill. I lost my dear sister to sepsis 8 years ago this August. She was in a very reputable hospital in ICU. They couldn’t save her. We later learned most people don’t recover from sepsis. Be ever vigilant of your dad. It is just a horrible way to go
I'm glad you listened to your gut instinct and saved your Dad!! My dad has been in Heaven since May 7th,2014. I miss him everyday and I know he's my guardian angel and I'll see him again soon.
Please, please if anything like this happens ever again to either of you or your loved ones (God forbid) rush to the nearest ER. The complications can be fast and unpredictable. Stay safe❤ Shane I’m so happy you’re better😊
I had food poisoning when I was 33 weeks pregnant. I went to the ER…. The ER doctor was the worst and told me I was puking because I was pregnant… go home and drink water and pedialyte…. I was furious, went straight upstairs and demanded to see my OB…. She was FURIOUS with the ER doctor and it was a whole thing. Glad Shane is okay… food poisoning is no joke!
My daughter had food poisoning a few months ago. She has additional needs and has aspirated in the past, which caused her to be in the ICU for two weeks. This time, thankfully, she didn't need to be admitted, but was in the ER for about 8-9 hours. She got 4 bags of fluid though an IV & they added nausea meds to that. It is a really dangerous thing so please, always get medical attention!! So glad you're doing better!
Sorry to hear about this horrible event Shane and I am happy to see you looking well. However, a trip to the ER would have been a better choice than toughing it out due to the threat of dehydration.
Severe dehydration and electrolytes being imbalanced can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and death. You really need to take these type things very seriously and get medical help.

Activated charcoal is a lifesaver for any type of poisoning or medication reaction. It quickly absorbs the toxin and flushes it out. My spouse and I have a rule we made in the last few years because of the pandemic actually! If either of us pukes 3 times, doesn't matter how bad, in less than 24 hours... we go to the ER. There are different kinds of hallucinations. Those that people tend to get from recreational drugs are more of visual distortions than true hallucinations (where you believe they're real).
Speaking from experience, natural hallucinations are WAY more terrifying than self-induced hallucinations. Think of the difference between choosing to drive a kids powerwheels plastic car, or being blind folded in a full sized Ferrari at top speed. One is light, bubbly, fun and cute, and the other is a beacon of fear and pure terror on the road 😂😂
its completely different doing when something is a thing you have chosen to do and understand why its happening compared to something happening thats out of your control and you dont know why its happening
My food poisoning was from a leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwich. Three days- sickest I’ve ever seen. Didn’t eat turkey for ten years. But gained so much respect for food safety.
I was going to say "food poisoning". I had it in October and was the sickest I had ever been in years and years. Worse yet, was it was bad beans that I had eaten. Since I am older(65), it took a week for me to recover. I couldn't eat for days. I made sure to hydrate, rest, etc. I drank protein shakes to be sure I was getting vitamins and minerals.
I'm emetophobic, and this is literally my worst nightmare. Luckily, my high school health teacher told us, that if you're going to throw up from food poisoning, it'll most likely be within 30 minutes of eating whatever it is. Otherwise, you'll feel bad, but probably won't throw up.
Been there. Incredibly scary. I couldn't stop going to bathroom long enough to get to hospital. And it lasted over a week. I can't imagine also adding mobility issues to the equation.
Oh my! As a person with SMA I totally understand how this would have been horrific. Throwing up his so difficult for someone with SMA. I’m so glad you survived!❤
This is a crazy story! I'm having a hard time figuring out why there was no ER visit. Seems like a no-brainer for a physically compromised guy like Shane, for whom throwing up can be a huge choking hazard. Maybe everyone is sort of used to lurching from emergency to emergency, or maybe they didn't stop to consider how medically fragile Shane is when faced with certain illnesses. Shane, you really should have told Hannah and her mother that you needed to go to the ER. You were in the best position to judge. I'm a little mad at you about this! We almost lost you!
This is a no brainer for anyone... let alone someone with medical conditions. This can easily kill a perfectly healthy young person. It cam cause irreversible cardiac complications. It can go from 0-100 *_very quickly._*
It's possible Shane wasn't able to judge his condition due to the dehydration. As a Type 1 diabetic who lives in Florida, staying hydrated can be a challenge. One of the first symptoms is confusion/lack of awareness. It's so subtle, sometimes you don't realize it's happening. True story, last summer I attended an outdoor afternoon wedding. The ceremony only lasted an hour, but I started 'checking out' mentally. I knew I was feeling 'off', but I didn't tell anyone. Just said my goodbyes and left. During the one-hour drive home, my only thought was ... Gatorade! ... Gatorade! Made a beeline to the fridge, downed a bottle and felt fine. Only then I came to my senses and realized I'd skipped out on the reception entirely. So embarrassing - and rude! Wasn't able to apologize to the couple until they returned from the honeymoon. When I told the bride what happened, she said: "WE HAD GATORADE IN THE DRINKS COOLER!"
So sorry you had to go through this horrible experience, but glad you've recovered fully, Shane. With all your traveling, I'm surprised that you have not gotten COVID. That could possibly do you in, especially in a weakened condition. There's been a surge here in California lately. Be careful. All is well that ends well. ♥

Ya, hallucinating is no fun when your brain is dying. I saw the nurses dogs when they came into my room, saying it must be bring your dog to work day. In the ICU! Totally funny for me, but terrifying! Oh, also spoke to my dad and uncle, them telling me it’s not my time, and they died years ago. Crazy town. Sepsis sucks!

I hate to be that person, I'm not usually one to shame people... but to not take your spouse to the hospital is concerning. With every sign and symptom he presented and no one even considered calling 911 or going to the hospital ... If he was a fully functioning adult, that'd be one thing... but he's incapable of truly caring for himself and then to be so dehydrated that he's mentally incapable of even communicating.. and for almost a week.. wtf?! That's neglect... If he were to have died in her care, she would more than likely have been held responsible. Some might even question her intentions on not seeking medical care...
I agree. And I do not understand her laughing about it. She laughs after every single sentence he says in this video. Really makes me question if it's really just fake laughing she's done all along and it's just a habit now to laugh after everything he says, or does she really find this funny? And I used to like watching them, but this video has weirded me out.

Thank you Shane for being so real with us! I know you like to make fun of a lot of things and life in general, which is the most lovely quality, but this was serious and it scared you in the moment, thank you for sharing that side of things as well. I’m chronically ill with undiagnosed complaints, which have gotten worse and worse over the years, and when I get the flu or a stomach bug now it’s literally so scary, I don’t know what my body is doing, or if or when the hell is going to stop. Hannah, you invented the Barf-N-Slide! But seriously, very glad all’s well now. Edit: I agree with others re: going to ER via 911 call if needed. Also, no fluids for 3-4 hours then super tiny sips!
I’m conflicted because Shane is his own person and it’s ultimately his prerogative about seeking medical assistance. But the second I heard he was hallucinating and Hannah was aware of it the next day after the onset of hallucinations, and still went on a road trip is not stepping in and advocating for your spouse when they cannot due to a altered mental state. All I can attest to is that if had vomited 28 times and hallucinated, my spouse would be rushing me to the er, and I would do the same for him. The whole In sickness and in health part in wedding vows means you are responsible for taking care of your partner when they can’t and indicates the implicit trust you have for your partner to do what’s best for you.
I cannot believe you didn't take him directly to the ER for IV's, anti-biotics and anti-nausea RX. Completely unneeded and dangerous suffering while the toxins kept multiplying in his system for days. He also could of choked.
As soon as you started describing things food poisoning immediately entered my mind. I’ve had some absolutely wicked Flu’s and a couple times felt like this has to be close to dying on some level. Food poisoning has got to be just beyond brutal…and it does kill people. You’re lucky it didn’t. Glad to see you’re doing so much better.
Imagine having lungs as impaired as Shane’s. Now imagine having the night he described (vomited 30 times, hallucinating, etc.). Now superimpose Hannah’s laughter and the indifferent comment she made at 6:48 over that mental creation. It totally impugns the caregiving focus your channel has revolved around since its inception. Unironically hilarious!! lmaooooo
Alright you guys need to chill reading into things that aren't there. Shane is an adult and if he didn't want to go to the hospital, she couldn't force him.
Shane, that thought - this is how I am now, I'm weak now. That thought is terrifying. The day I turned 21, I woke up and got out of bed, and I couldn't feel or move anything below my waist. I fell over. As a person with no previous physical disability it was disorienting. And the thought - this is how my body is now, is so scary. Mine went away within an hour and I walk fine now. But I felt what you said so much.

The heart muscle is not a skeletal muscle

You can't get a needle into a dehydrated vein
@@ayasha89games66 I've had severe dehydration (volume loss), unable to stand, and had to be carried out of the house and taken by ambulance to the hospital -- and they definitely got a needle into me to provide IV fluids. I was there when it happened.
@@Tserit’s very hard, but professionals can do it.

It's amazing you have a sense of humor after all this. I'm very glad you're okay
So sorry you had to go through this horrible experience, but glad you've recovered fully, Shane. With all your traveling, I'm surprised that you have not gotten COVID.
Pre-Ordered! I was born with AMC, I navigate through life in a powerchair. I have been through the whole spectrum of inter-couple relationships. Your content is very relatable!
Amazon sells hospital grade barf bags. It is a plastic ring and long bag that is collapsed into the ring so it packs easily in a purse or backpack. All you do it pull the bag down to extend and let it fly! I keep them in the car for the kids.
Exactly! We have a box of emesis bags for situations like this.
Shane, you are so brave. Hannah, you are such a fabulous partner. Love to both of you.
Hi guys I’ve missed you nice to see you back ❤
Thank you Shane for being so real with us! I recognized your fear when you said ‘I’m forever weak now’. Fortunately you are not!!! But thanks for sharing these real feelings, it made me feel less alone❤
❤❤
Welcome Back!!!!!!!
I’m so glad to hear you guys are doing better and feeling better! Love your videos!! Are you guys still releasing your book this year? Can’t wait for that!
Hannah, you invented the Barf-N-Slide! But seriously, very glad all’s well now. Edit: I agree with others re: going to ER via 911 call if needed. Also, no fluids for 3-4 hours then super tiny sips!
Consider keeping activated charcoal around for these kinds of issues. Good to have for dogs as well. $12 for several years worth.
The whole
In sickness and in health part in wedding vows means you are responsible for taking care of your partner when they can’t and indicates the implicit trust you have for your partner to do what’s best for you.
I feel like Hannah was sort of joking through this whole video. I don’t get it.
Couldn't have said it better. Saving his life trumps whether or not he "wants" to go.
Oh my gosh, so scary, I’m sorry. So glad you made it through. I cannot imagine how scared you both must of been. 🙏❤️🩹
the boy who lived - Shane cracks me up!
Shane is so funny, he cracks me up 😂it would be so fun to hang out with you guys… you’re so funny haha
I cannot believe you didn't take him directly to the ER for IV's, anti-biotics and anti-nausea RX. Completely unneeded and dangerous suffering while the toxins kept multiplying in his system for days. He also could of choked.
Pure neglect
You guys don't have any business making those kind of remarks. You don't live their life.
@@julieraichart7961the majority of us aren’t as cavalier
@@marias.wainwright3481 paramedics can. Hate to say but he can't fight anyone. Would he rather be dead or alive
@@marias.wainwright3481 Actually she very much could force him. He wasn't exactly in the ideal mental state to be making decisions.
We have been missing you! Welcome back!!
I am so glad you survived this, Shane--how awful for you and Hannah! I actually had severe food-poisoning myself just a couple of weeks ago and it took me out for a full five days after the initial 20 hours of purging everything inside me! You guys are so awesome, love your invention! 😃❤
