Audi SQ5 TFSI, 2017 with huge internal damage . Repair bill for 7000£ ! Will warranty cover it ?

- Welcome to our channel at VAG Technic
In this video we will be working on an Audi SQ5 with EA839 engine 3.0TFSI with single turbo. Owner contacted us with a ticking noise and after a short drive I thought it was the high pressure fuel pump. We had a spare pump in the shop so I swapped it quickly and the noise was still there. There was no other reason for the noise than the failing rocker arm. Car had no misfire , no fault codes, just low frequency noise on low rpm under acceleration. With no proof the only option was to remove the engine and have a look inside. But because warranty was involved the process wasn't straightforward. More in the video ...
What's your experience with warranties ?

As much as I hate seeing this happen to these engines and the work / cost involved it’s a great video and the work you guys are doing is amazing, mines coming upto 83k miles problem free so far 🤞🏽
what are you waiting for? to be the special guest for a Vag Technic episode?
Most Audi owners thrash the hell out of them hence engines blow , mine never played up and hitting 138,000 miles and perfect , too many cane them in every gear ..oops £7000 bill
@@RATADATUAVELHA😂
@@curtisducatiit’s luck of the draw really Iv had B8 S4 at stage 2 upto 120k miles problem free and my B9 S5 stage 2 at 85k now serviced every 5k miles they are strong engines just the off chance something goes wrong they are not easy or cheap to repair
@@M06H1M1 for me, it's a very weak engine...always due to timing chain problems wear too soon which makes a huge bill to fix. If that was here in Portugal, beside the very expensive car, if the engine blown like this it would be for scrap, for sure. until today I really don't know why the same cars in UK are less 5K-10K than in Portugal, is it because of the RHD ?
My 2017 S4 Avant just turned 68k miles. No ticking noise nor metal in the oil filter, but those videos doesn't help to not worry especially I'm neither close to UK or Slovakia 😂
😀
This is the first time Ive been able to watch you guys do the rocker arms without having a sleepless night! I sold my B9 S4 Avant last week!... I miss it, but don't miss the anxiety of ownership.
It’s good you have the expertise to help owners with these engines. It’s criminal that Audi allow crap design or materials to cause these defects. More content for us though 😄
I'm looking forward to the upcoming RS5 video where doggo shows us how to replace broken rocker arms and timing chain after the plastic fails, you do so many of these engines I'm sure doggo will have picked up some skills 😁
So much work involved with these repairs and typical VAG even when they know there is an issue and improved parts come along later, they still refuse to warranty them. i had an 18,000 mile Golf R mk 7 just out of warranty at 3 years old when the EA888 water pump issue started 🤷♂
not many miles eh?
I have never owned a. Audi and don't think I ever will, just too stressful wondering what will go wrong next
i have been driving 45 years. never had and never will own anything german.
toyota only for me. can last forever.
Ill never forget when I got my rs3 some dude who was getting out of his contract got out of the rs3 presumably and then later I saw him hop into his new car a sq5. he literally started up the car in sport mode and WOTd out of the dealership. Then later my rs3 engine blew up under warranty. that dude probly didnt even break it in
This is the thing. Even if the vehicle is serviced by a main dealership all under specs, it doesn't negate the fact that some drivers just treat their cars like shit. In those circumstances I don't always blame the manufacturer.
It's like buying a used PS5 and it blows up after a few months of ownership. Then you realise that the previous owner was throwing it against the wall. Is that Sony's fault it failed or the previous owner?
Audi drivers eh
Years ago my 3.0 tdi 2015 (new shape) q7 developed a rattling noise at 4000 miles. In the end was the cam shaft tensioners and was covered under Audi warranty. Then when I got the car back I could hear a leak when accelerating, that turned out to be exhaust manifold gasket that was reused when it should have been replaced. That was sorted also. The bill had I not been under warranty would have been £8,500.
Long story short Audi were great but I’m shocked these type of issues are so common!
You need to sort out your oil pressure , it will happen again

audi - always underneath dismantling it
The shop I used to work for had the "Audi Towel" to pass to the customers when they saw the final repair invoice. By using it the ink on the invoice was prevented from running and getting blurry.
Would the prices be any different to a Volkswagen/seat/skoda as they all share the same parts?
@@suprac19longitudinal engine Audis are a bit different from typical VW/Seat/Skoda.
I'm convinced that the information that I was given many years ago by a very experienced mechanical engineer stands up more today than what it did years ago. Most people accept the service schedule provided by the vehicle manufacturer as being the best available but is it? Think of it, it is in the manufacturer's own interest to only specify the "minimum" standards - 60,000 miles for a timing belt for instance; I personally would never go over 30,000 miles in any car. Who benefits from extended service intervals? the manufacturer after all, when your car breaks down, where do you get the parts? How many people actually check the quality of the oils used by garages - No One! Home mechanics are just as bad "I always use Castrol or Shell or whatever make takes their fancy" but is the best and most appropriate for your car - DO YOUR RESEARCH!
Love your channel... love vag cars... but the design flaws are just frightening. Brilliant vid as always and love that Dobbie.. 👍
Always a delight to watch the Videos guys, keep up the good work.
Audi don't schedule enough oil changes on these cars. I have an SQ7 from new in 2020 and I've doubled the frequency of oil changes.

Good for you. Do the right thing. Change it yourself LiquiMoly Synthoils work great.
Hey guys, been watching your videos for a while and appreciate your insight on these topics.
i have a 2017 panamera 4s that has same engine with rocker arm issues that you guys talk about. i have a ticking noise and very rough idle. could the rough idle also be related to the rocker arms going bad?
trying to figure out this car, it’s been 8 months and lots of money for porsche to diagnose, all they said was new engine because carbon buildup… crazy.
you were the first people that could identify the problem. thanks!
One thing I will point out is that you can do rocker arm replacement with the engine in the car. I’m currently having mine replaced just for peace of mind and the shop I ended up choosing is doing the job with the engine in the car which is saving me a good chunk of change
How you’ll clean the valves ?
@@VAGTechnic I was mostly just replying to the statement at the beginning about needing to pull the engine to remove the valve covers to inspect the valvetrain. At the end of the day I’m just a home mechanic so you definitely know more than me, I’ve just noticed that a lot of shops charge much more for rocker arm replacements because they follow the service manual and pull the engine. From the perspective of me as the customer, finding a shop that would do the job without pulling the engine saved me almost $3000. But yea to clean the valves the engine does need to come out as far as I know.
Thanks for showing this! Question: Our 2016 Q5 3.0T with 118k went in for routine service (V-belt replacement), etc. Advised timing chain needed replaced and was completed under warranty ($12,000) otherwise. Drove the car for 2 weeks afterwards maybe 1k miles. All good until massive creaking, popping sounds, no warning lights. Had it towed to the dealer and was advised blown engine due to oil pump failure. Dealer is stating this is not connected to previous work. This doesn't sound right to me but I have been advised that the warranty will only cover 12k with 13k remaining due for a new engine. Was told that the oil pump just stopped. It seems plausible that the previous work done is likely connected to the failure. Any advice on this and or what would cause the oil pump to fail. It just seems ironic that the preventative maintenance was done and then 2 weeks later complete failure. thanks
My 2018 S5 has 67,000 miles on it and Ive never had any issues. I religiously change the oil at 7K with full 5-30 synthetic pentosin warm weather oil.
7k miles is over 10k km and is a longish interval
I dropped it down to about 5K since I drive it like I stole it lol@@jamesmedina2062
Rocker arm failure. I wasnt sure what the video would show but infigired it was rocker arm, water pump or a smoked cylinder because id a water pump. I have heard a lot of peope with rocker arm dailures on the early 3.0 tuebos issue seems to be resolved on 2019+ model years (USA model year)
Be interested to hear your thoughts on the VAG groups recent change to timing belt intervals, from every 60 months to some even going as high as 200,000 miles and 180 months checking intervals?
Me too would like that opinion.. maybe when Audi did service them, they were in reasonable condition at that age & milage
good belts are lasting a long time and aging depends on heat so if not a hot V, they should not see too much heat
My 2018 S5 is at the dealership with the same issue. It's been ticking since 37k km under slight load (touch the gas). The dealership found aluminium in the oil and one of the cylinders knocking. It's been 2 months I'm waiting for the dealership/warranty (audi warranty platinum) .
Did you discover is it rocker arm issue or cilinder wear ?
@@vasilqnev3730 not yet... Still in the shop
Knocking when touching the gas sounds like a piston/cylindre clearance issue...
@@henktulp4400 car is still at the dealership, I'll know more when I'll get it back. But cylinder 2 was knocking I was told.
Big respect for your job 👌

Nice (or perhaps not) RS5 soft top in the garage 🥰
Less way likes than these guys deserve .... I love your videos
I had an extended warranty on an A6 and also one on a 2003 530i in the early 2000s. I never had a bit of trouble with them paying fully on any work on either, and the 2002 A6 was in the shop a lot. It had a twin turbo 2.7 litre engine. Piece of junk.
Great to see professionals at work. Just wondering if “bits” from the failed rocker arm bearing would have been visible during oil changes(if oil was checked for metal)? Also what caused the carbon build up around the valves..bad fuel?….👍
No , sump plug is higher spot in the sump so all of it will stay inside
So you need to listen well and even use a stethoscope placed on the valve cover to hear any unusual noises. The carbon is not going to be related to the fuel type. You need to use a PCV breather tank or add a port injection to keep the intake valves cleaned off. Of course Audi uses port and direct injection on some of their cars
Nice one! You did a great job. Upgraded rockerarms have bigger roller's (larger diameter) these don't fail?
7K is what Audi wants me to pay for 4 new wheels, that I just replaced by them 2 years ago. I have been fucked over my Audi in Colorado. Every single time I leave the dealorship for service, as I am driving home it breaks down. Happened 4 times now. Audi wont cover or fix anything. They keep saying its a coincidence, but after the 4th time leaving the dealor having a brand new issue, I know its not a coincidence. There were 3 seperate diagnostics where I went to get a second opinion from an Audi Specailist shop, and they were blown away by what Audi told me I needed to repair. They even let me in the garage and showed me exactly why the Audi Diagnostics was completely wrong, as I am not a mechanic and need everything simplified.
I got my 2018 S5 Sportback with 45K miles in 2020. I now have 75K miles almost 5 years later, so you can see I am not driving more than 7K miles a year. Crankcase breather hose is leaking oil, rocker arms are broken, piston rings shattered, and at least 20 other things i have replaced since. Over $28K in repairs since I got the car 30K miles ago. Will never buy an Audi Again. The least reliable techs in the business.
great work and advice
Audi and warranty 🤣🤣 this will be a good comedy.
This was surprising 😮
What was the final result of this problem in the end? Was it the injectors or engine build misshaps?
TFSI engines are such amazing crap that Audi should provide two spare ones for every newly purchased car
Watching this with my B9 S5 on 62k ☠️
I remember when Audi made great cars
They are making these engines literally impossible for diy mechanics to work on these days.
Please could you explain the timing marks
Why the high revving at the start of the video
Was waiting for catastrophic failure to happen
😀 Good one
Can someone explain to me why there is so much carbon build up in the intake ports? Where the hell is that coming from? Crankcase recirculation? If so wouldn't it be wise to have a catch can to knock the fine particles of oil out of the air being sucked out of the crankcase before it goes into the intake?
By the way, great video and a really thorough explanation during the test drive for things to look out for when buying these cars.
Direct injection means there's no fuel to keep the intake valve area clean
What piston in this engine need to be at TDC ? some manual say 2 other say 1
No problems, if the owner has the money to buy a sq5 I assume paying the repair bill for him is like buying a bag of potatoes, just pocket money.
im thinking to purchase 2022 sq5 sportback audi certified 25k mileage. bad idea in general?
Great job guys
The old pre 2019 rocker bearing mistake.
You didn't use 8mm pins to properly align covers? Instead, you used timing covers? That will alight cover longitudinal, but what about side to side at the back and front?
The rollers again?!?!!
This happens when the car is left running with the ignition on. Pressure in the pump is lower and the oil does not lubricate much. Mercedes have the same problem with the in-line 2.9 diesel 350d and 400d. After 2022, this problem is solved at Mercedes. I don't know about Audi. Heck change the oil every 5000 miles.
Hi, i have a Question, are u guys having to clean the audi air ports out from carbon build up on the audi's 3.0 v6 becuzs of check Engine light code PO49100 saying Insufficient air flow if so what is the cost of that service
Do the needle bearings stay in the head? Can they fall into the oil sump... or get stuck in oil drain passages?
Always end up in sump
@@VAGTechnic thank you for replying!
I know a guy who will do that for 500 no joke . Hell spend all night and day on it.
Uhgg and another one. I have not been driving my '18 stage 2 S4 nearly as hard. The paranoia is real lol. Probably won't make a difference anyway. I did use higher weight oil on my last change. So hot here in the summer, I'm more comfortable running something other than the 0w-20.
0-20 is ridiculous. Guarantee that's in there purely for fuel economy to get it into a tax bracket
@@matteightytwo Of course
Great video as always. Question, if youve gone to the effort of tearibg down timing assembly, is it worth having a look at bottom end bearings at the same time? Especially when you find materials in the oil. Thanks!
Goes in the filter first … no funds for such a strip down + gaskets , bolts . Had much worse contamination in other S4 runs ok

Hi, first of all great work very neat and precise. I have a question if you could help please, I have a 2013 audi a6 3.0 bitdi and i think I have a problem with engine cooling. The problem is it shows 90° temperature in the cluster but when i check the coolant temperature with carly it flactuates between 72 and 77 , it reaches over 80 but never 90 only after a long drive or if driven a bit hard. Also the oil temperature stays at about 80° and only goes over 90° when driven harder. Do you think it is the main water thermostat? Thank you
Few coolant sensors in radiator it’s never more

I must admit as a new owner of a 2018 S5 this issue is at the back of my mind, As someone who also wants to mildy tune it aswell I'm not sure a warranty is worth getting unless they dont check for a map etc when looking? Any ideas on that? I am a Technician myself but still a lot of costs involved to do these jobs not to mention special locking tools if needed etc

If the tensioners where made of metal and not plastic would that be a fail proof product or would it not work? I know plastics cheaper then metal but in this instance if so many are failing you think they would revise the failed item
How would That Work ? 😬 metal on metal is not good combination
I think they leave that stuff as-is as a designed to fail part. They could easily redesign it. Some engine chains don't even use tensioners. Belts can use steel pulleys. If they wanted bulletproof I would design pulley wheels perhaps toothed and with bearings, with minimal spring tension or hydraulic pressure.

wow another audi engine bites the dust, surpising. I used to be an audi car guy then I got tired of doing the stupid repairs on an engine engineers make to fail, no more audi's in my driveway
Isn’t this the same issue you guys filmed a while back in another S (I think it was a 5 or 6)? I smell another class action coming for VAG similar to my RS and their turbo issues. R&D, full VAG vehicle repair, and an occasional doggo cameo? You guys are definitely a 100% full service shop! Personally, if anyone likes this engine platform, I would recommend waiting a few years till they sort out the bearing issues in the rocker arms. Plenty of other power plants out there that are more reliable until this is acknowledged by VW. Side note…..how did you recover your GoPro????
Yeah now that I think of it that’s the first vid I’ve ever watched from this channel. I’m surprised little action has been taken so far.
@@Mad_Rass.mk6gli anytime a large corporation stands to lose money in that amount they will turn a blind eye until it comes to serious litigation. Yet everyone seems to jump on the EV needing a battery bandwagon after 10-15years! Add the cost of this £7k repair after only 6 years plus fuel for 60k+ miles and the battery issue seems moot at this point.
Why? A much bigger probability of needing a new battery after 15 years compared an engine potentially having an expensive failure. I mean why mention the cost of fuel? Unless electricity has suddenly become free for the vast majority of people…
Fuel is a huge cost over that period - and the difference could easily be £10k in itself. Then factor oil change every 10k, gearbox oil change 40k, spark plugs or glow plugs 60k, then of course all of the emissions released devices which will fall apart - DPF/GPF, cat converter, PCV, EGR, O2 sensor, then the random stuff - turbo, wastegate, MAF, Water pump, drive pullies, chains/belts, cam/crank sensors, alternator, starter, radiator, various coolant seals and hoses carbon cleaning. The list goes on!
@@RS-ve8nq like I asked before, unless I’ve missed something is electric free now? Is it not classed as a cost anymore? Yeh I mean you could have a solar set up with battery storage but how much is the initial outlay on that? Would be a good few years before you see any benefit on your spend.
You have basically written a massive list of “what ifs” when in reality very little if any of those would need doing for the vast majority of vehicles. Even if something of your list needed doing most would be covered under manufactures warranty or third party warranty. Much like an EV battery would until the battery warranty runs out. 🤦🏻♂️
My 8V RS3 was sold with 53k miles on the clock. It had quite a few modifications and was running 420hp. I serviced it more than required. I bought it a 20k miles just after it had engine oil, filter and Haldex oil done. £450 spent on that.
I had the gearbox serviced not long after I bought it costing £225. I serviced the engine oil and filter every 5k miles costing around £140 per service. It had gearbox and haldex done again at 40k miles. Nothing failed in my ownership. Not quite the horrendous ownership you want to make out every car owner has.
My M2 now has 64k miles on it. Again tuned and modified. Other than servicing and modifications it’s cost me nothing in actual repairs. Again, not quite the horrendous ownership.
My wife’s F22 M135i also tuned and modified. Now on 74k miles. She’s had it for 4 years and it hasn’t missed a beat. Gearbox serviced at 45k miles, little bit pricey due to the ZF fluid. Car has also been serviced regularly and it hasn’t had anything fail on your massive “what if” list either.
Maybe you can see where I’m going with this? Owning an ICE car is not quite the millstone around the neck you are trying to make it out to be. Also interested in hearing how you think an EV is even an option for a lot of the population? Not exactly cheap to buy or has that suddenly changed as well?
My commentary was about 10-15yr time frame - so no need to tell me about vehicles that are younger than that - as you said, warranty sorts issues out typically. Not sure what you pay per KWh, or fuel, but even UK prices should be at least half the cost per mile driven - so if you save £1000 per year on fuel minimum, you can work out the maths over 10-15yrs, that’s just fuel and not maintenance/servicing. And why would I give a monkeys about what type of vehicle is suitable for any given situation? No one ever suggested there was a 1 size fits all solution, hence I’ve got an S4, an S5, and RX7 a V8 and a VAG SUV. The S4&5 are coming up 14&13yrs old respectively. Those ‘random things’ I mentioned are actual things that happen and I’ve actually fixed most of them so far - forgot to include oil leaks - not sure if you’ve even watched this guys channel? 🤦
Love my s6 2'2 ,and not v8😂😂😂
