- Welcome to our channel at VAG Technic
In this video we will be working on an Audi SQ5 with EA839 engine 3.0TFSI with single turbo. Owner contacted us with a ticking noise and after a short drive I thought it was the high pressure fuel pump. We had a spare pump in the shop so I swapped it quickly and the noise was still there. There was no other reason for the noise than the failing rocker arm. Car had no misfire , no fault codes, just low frequency noise on low rpm under acceleration. With no proof the only option was to remove the engine and have a look inside. But because warranty was involved the process wasn't straightforward. More in the video ...
What's your experience with warranties ?
Thank you for watching

This is the first time Ive been able to watch you guys do the rocker arms without having a sleepless night! I sold my B9 S4 Avant last week!... I miss it, but don't miss the anxiety of ownership.
Really enjoyed your 40 mins of talk (no sarcasm).A great informative video by professionals.Well done.
You guys are very professional. This video is very informative for anyone thinking of getting into these cars. The warranty aspect was interesting. If I was a genuine trustworthy warranty company, I'm not sure I would want to risk covering these engines. Unless of course, the failure numbers are insignificant in relation to the numbers on the road. If I owned one, I would be getting it into you as soon as possible, so I could sleep at night. Good public service broadcasting here, well done to all at VAG Technic TV.
As much as I hate seeing this happen to these engines and the work / cost involved it’s a great video and the work you guys are doing is amazing, mines coming upto 83k miles problem free so far 🤞🏽
what are you waiting for? to be the special guest for a Vag Technic episode?
Most Audi owners thrash the hell out of them hence engines blow , mine never played up and hitting 138,000 miles and perfect , too many cane them in every gear ..oops £7000 bill

@@curtisducatiit’s luck of the draw really Iv had B8 S4 at stage 2 upto 120k miles problem free and my B9 S5 stage 2 at 85k now serviced every 5k miles they are strong engines just the off chance something goes wrong they are not easy or cheap to repair
@@M06H1M1 for me, it's a very weak engine...always due to timing chain problems wear too soon which makes a huge bill to fix. If that was here in Portugal, beside the very expensive car, if the engine blown like this it would be for scrap, for sure. until today I really don't know why the same cars in UK are less 5K-10K than in Portugal, is it because of the RHD ?

Big respect for your job 👌
Hi, thanks for this general advice to save a lot of trouble, great video great work,
My 2017 S4 Avant just turned 68k miles. No ticking noise nor metal in the oil filter, but those videos doesn't help to not worry especially I'm neither close to UK or Slovakia 😂
😀
I have to keep watching your channel as it reminds me why I spend what I do to lease my Audi’s. I’d be sat crying if my new 5 year old car was in bits with a huge bill on its way. Am I mad to think you should get 10 years or 120k miles out of a ‘premium’ car before it destroys itself.
Hey guys, been watching your videos for a while and appreciate your insight on these topics.
i have a 2017 panamera 4s that has same engine with rocker arm issues that you guys talk about. i have a ticking noise and very rough idle. could the rough idle also be related to the rocker arms going bad?
trying to figure out this car, it’s been 8 months and lots of money for porsche to diagnose, all they said was new engine because carbon buildup… crazy.
you were the first people that could identify the problem. thanks!
It’s good you have the expertise to help owners with these engines. It’s criminal that Audi allow crap design or materials to cause these defects. More content for us though 😄
great work and advice
Great job guys
I do miss my 2018 S5 sometimes, but I for sure don't miss the fear of driving it due to this "under engineering". I drive an RS6 C8 2022 now, really an incredible car, all good in 20000miles so far and still with 4 years of factory warranty to go. 🙏
That’s crazy but with a 2019 I got no fear 😂 shame tho Audi really need to recall the older rocker arms I feel bad for those that got screwed over. But that said an s4 will not hold a candle to an rs6 I hope to own one too someday 🙌.
audi - always underneath dismantling it
The shop I used to work for had the "Audi Towel" to pass to the customers when they saw the final repair invoice. By using it the ink on the invoice was prevented from running and getting blurry.
Would the prices be any different to a Volkswagen/seat/skoda as they all share the same parts?

After a bit of checking and research on my RS5, I was relieved to find that my engine build date should mean I have the fatty bearings in my rocker arms. I recently did get to use my extended warranty for the first time. In the States here - my warranty is through Fidelity Warranty Services, which is supposed to be one of the better ones. Car went in for a coolant leak at my regular shop. Pretty easy process - gave my warranty info to the owner, he contacted the company, they approved repairs in about an hour. Ended up getting the water pump replaced for a leak. Gives me a bit of confidence and security going forward with the warranty, as I have about 55k miles or 5 years remaining on the warranty.
What build date is it?

Nice one! You did a great job. Upgraded rockerarms have bigger roller's (larger diameter) these don't fail?
Great to see such honest, knowledgeable Audi specialists - true professionals that respect the cars and their customers - you deserve great success! Any tips on the '11 V8 S5 other than carbon intake cleaning?
So many things 😄 Injectors , catalyst, chains , intake flaps
Thx for the reply. The S5 has been good to me over 80K miles (second owner) 122K total. Just replaced the front suspension and brakes - shocks all-round - such a great car to drive - and exceptional in snow. Congratulations on your well deserved success.@@VAGTechnic
Nice happy ending my friend. 💯👍🏾✌🏾
Nice (or perhaps not) RS5 soft top in the garage 🥰
a pleasure to watch as always. about the rear fender and fake exhausts, I think you know it's cheaper building one single rear fender for all models an put fake exhausts tips for the versions who doesn't use them. who has the lowest version, loves the race-wannabe-extra.
I'm looking forward to the upcoming RS5 video where doggo shows us how to replace broken rocker arms and timing chain after the plastic fails, you do so many of these engines I'm sure doggo will have picked up some skills 😁
So much work involved with these repairs and typical VAG even when they know there is an issue and improved parts come along later, they still refuse to warranty them. i had an 18,000 mile Golf R mk 7 just out of warranty at 3 years old when the EA888 water pump issue started 🤷♂
not many miles eh?
Nice video!
Not a bad price for new chain, walnut blast, suspension, rocker arms.
Thanks for showing this! Question: Our 2016 Q5 3.0T with 118k went in for routine service (V-belt replacement), etc. Advised timing chain needed replaced and was completed under warranty ($12,000) otherwise. Drove the car for 2 weeks afterwards maybe 1k miles. All good until massive creaking, popping sounds, no warning lights. Had it towed to the dealer and was advised blown engine due to oil pump failure. Dealer is stating this is not connected to previous work. This doesn't sound right to me but I have been advised that the warranty will only cover 12k with 13k remaining due for a new engine. Was told that the oil pump just stopped. It seems plausible that the previous work done is likely connected to the failure. Any advice on this and or what would cause the oil pump to fail. It just seems ironic that the preventative maintenance was done and then 2 weeks later complete failure. thanks
I still laugh at people in denial saying "this isn't a big problem". Sure, keep your head in that hole.
I have never owned a. Audi and don't think I ever will, just too stressful wondering what will go wrong next
i have been driving 45 years. never had and never will own anything german.

Providing that everything was done on time, service, prevention works etc, is it a reliable solid engine in 2024?
Great content, keep us informed 😊
Would it be cheaper or easier if the timingchainsystem was in the front of the engine?
Ill never forget when I got my rs3 some dude who was getting out of his contract got out of the rs3 presumably and then later I saw him hop into his new car a sq5. he literally started up the car in sport mode and WOTd out of the dealership. Then later my rs3 engine blew up under warranty. that dude probly didnt even break it in
This is the thing. Even if the vehicle is serviced by a main dealership all under specs, it doesn't negate the fact that some drivers just treat their cars like shit. In those circumstances I don't always blame the manufacturer.
It's like buying a used PS5 and it blows up after a few months of ownership. Then you realise that the previous owner was throwing it against the wall. Is that Sony's fault it failed or the previous owner?
Audi drivers eh
Less way likes than these guys deserve .... I love your videos
Years ago my 3.0 tdi 2015 (new shape) q7 developed a rattling noise at 4000 miles. In the end was the cam shaft tensioners and was covered under Audi warranty. Then when I got the car back I could hear a leak when accelerating, that turned out to be exhaust manifold gasket that was reused when it should have been replaced. That was sorted also. The bill had I not been under warranty would have been £8,500.
Long story short Audi were great but I’m shocked these type of issues are so common!
You need to sort out your oil pressure , it will happen again

Hi Guys. I've got S7 2016 4.0 tfsi . Do I have the same roller rockrer arms? Do I should worries? All the best guys.
I'm convinced that the information that I was given many years ago by a very experienced mechanical engineer stands up more today than what it did years ago. Most people accept the service schedule provided by the vehicle manufacturer as being the best available but is it? Think of it, it is in the manufacturer's own interest to only specify the "minimum" standards - 60,000 miles for a timing belt for instance; I personally would never go over 30,000 miles in any car. Who benefits from extended service intervals? the manufacturer after all, when your car breaks down, where do you get the parts? How many people actually check the quality of the oils used by garages - No One! Home mechanics are just as bad "I always use Castrol or Shell or whatever make takes their fancy" but is the best and most appropriate for your car - DO YOUR RESEARCH!
Rocker arms goooooooone
Awesome vid guys as ever , thankyou///////////////////and no I havent got am Audi
Be interested to hear your thoughts on the VAG groups recent change to timing belt intervals, from every 60 months to some even going as high as 200,000 miles and 180 months checking intervals?
Me too would like that opinion.. maybe when Audi did service them, they were in reasonable condition at that age & milage
good belts are lasting a long time and aging depends on heat so if not a hot V, they should not see too much heat
What engine you suggest in a6 c7 2015-2016? 3.0 bitdi 320hp or 3.0 tfsi? I know problems with camshaft on TDI, is it possible to put camshaft from older v6?
Great to see professionals at work. Just wondering if “bits” from the failed rocker arm bearing would have been visible during oil changes(if oil was checked for metal)? Also what caused the carbon build up around the valves..bad fuel?….👍
No , sump plug is higher spot in the sump so all of it will stay inside
So you need to listen well and even use a stethoscope placed on the valve cover to hear any unusual noises. The carbon is not going to be related to the fuel type. You need to use a PCV breather tank or add a port injection to keep the intake valves cleaned off. Of course Audi uses port and direct injection on some of their cars
What was the final result of this problem in the end? Was it the injectors or engine build misshaps?
how many miles? service intervals?
10k oil changes is the problem!
Hi, first of all great work very neat and precise. I have a question if you could help please, I have a 2013 audi a6 3.0 bitdi and i think I have a problem with engine cooling. The problem is it shows 90° temperature in the cluster but when i check the coolant temperature with carly it flactuates between 72 and 77 , it reaches over 80 but never 90 only after a long drive or if driven a bit hard. Also the oil temperature stays at about 80° and only goes over 90° when driven harder. Do you think it is the main water thermostat? Thank you
Few coolant sensors in radiator it’s never more
Would you recommend the later diesel SQ5 over this petrol variant?
My 2018 S5 has 67,000 miles on it and Ive never had any issues. I religiously change the oil at 7K with full 5-30 synthetic pentosin warm weather oil.
7k miles is over 10k km and is a longish interval
I dropped it down to about 5K since I drive it like I stole it lol@@jamesmedina2062
Porsche use the same engine Biturbo 440hp version. Is there also the problem or did Porsche clear this problem from the engine?
Top boys
Wicked vid guys. I have a 1998 e36 328i, on 100k. Would you advise use BG erp in it?
Always on any car
As a mechanic I’ve seen this problem with the same sort of construction with Dodge Ram engines.... with them it is normally caused by using the wrong viscosity of Engine oil:too high viscosity oil doesn’t lubricate the needlebearings in the camfollowers effectively... as soon as the followers seize up the camshaft gets eaten away....
The parts for the Dodge engine aren’t too costly.... different story with the Audi engine I suppose...
Are the q5s with the 2.0T more reliable and cheaper to maintain?
Nice work!
i had the same engine in my s4, it was best engine i drove about 120k miles on it without any issues!
Is the timing chain on these lubricated by the engine oil?
I remember when Audi made great cars
Can someone explain to me why there is so much carbon build up in the intake ports? Where the hell is that coming from? Crankcase recirculation? If so wouldn't it be wise to have a catch can to knock the fine particles of oil out of the air being sucked out of the crankcase before it goes into the intake?
By the way, great video and a really thorough explanation during the test drive for things to look out for when buying these cars.
Direct injection means there's no fuel to keep the intake valve area clean
Great work guys. But 0w-20 ? ... Audi have might as well used vegetable oil. I wonder if there is a specific part where thicker oil can not lubricate , and i wonder the reason for that design .
Because in common nowledge it is better to use a thicker oil every ~50-60.000 miles , like going from 5w30 to 5w40 , or 0w30 to 0w40. Why is that designed that way ? Emissions ?
Where are you located? You have an Audi?
I don't think you should need to step to heavier and heavier oil at those intervals. The engine and weather should dictate and not change much unless it is over 10 years/ 150k miles older.
Isn’t this the same issue you guys filmed a while back in another S (I think it was a 5 or 6)? I smell another class action coming for VAG similar to my RS and their turbo issues. R&D, full VAG vehicle repair, and an occasional doggo cameo? You guys are definitely a 100% full service shop! Personally, if anyone likes this engine platform, I would recommend waiting a few years till they sort out the bearing issues in the rocker arms. Plenty of other power plants out there that are more reliable until this is acknowledged by VW. Side note…..how did you recover your GoPro????
Yeah now that I think of it that’s the first vid I’ve ever watched from this channel. I’m surprised little action has been taken so far.
@@Mad_Rass.mk6gli anytime a large corporation stands to lose money in that amount they will turn a blind eye until it comes to serious litigation. One thing I will point out is that you can do rocker arm replacement with the engine in the car. I’m currently having mine replaced just for peace of mind and the shop I ended up choosing is doing the job with the engine in the car which is saving me a good chunk of change
How you’ll clean the valves ?
@@VAGTechnic I was mostly just replying to the statement at the beginning about needing to pull the engine to remove the valve covers to inspect the valvetrain. At the end of the day I’m just a home mechanic so you definitely know more than me, I’ve just noticed that a lot of shops charge much more for rocker arm replacements because they follow the service manual and pull the engine. From the perspective of me as the customer, finding a shop that would do the job without pulling the engine saved me almost $3000. But yea to clean the valves the engine does need to come out as far as I know.
0:54 I'm expecting the revving engine to explode at any moment. A ticking time bomb
Do the needle bearings stay in the head? Can they fall into the oil sump... or get stuck in oil drain passages?

In the Netherlands the highway police has a problem with ‘high maintenance costs’ and ‘excessive down time’ when it comes to their patrol cars..... guess which brand I’m referring to.....
I had an extended warranty on an A6 and also one on a 2003 530i in the early 2000s. I never had a bit of trouble with them paying fully on any work on either, and the 2002 A6 was in the shop a lot. It had a twin turbo 2.7 litre engine. Piece of junk.

👏
Such a shame these engines have this potential flaw. Would love an S4 Avant / S5 Sportback but completely put off by this issue. If I was an owner just out of warranty I’d be hounding Audi UK to cover the cost or a significant portion of. My sister managed to get them to cover a gearbox failure on her A6 out of warranty - it’s possible!
Audi Uk are complete bunch of wankers and wouldnt do a thing to help their customers so would be pointless
Go for a 340i touring far better (and i own an s4 avant…)
How did she manage that? I’m trying to fight them for a known fault but is excluded under extended warranty but Audi UK washed their hands straight away and pushed me back to the dealer to consider contribution …
Wow!! really shocked how much carbon build up in the intake. Is this to be expected on all TFSI engines? or can it be reduced using premium fuels?
Fuel is sprayed behind valves 🤷♂️

Those used vehicle warranty companies are always an absolute scam. I always tell people to avoid them. You're better off to keep the 500 or 1000 £ as savings for maintenance or repairs.
Actually we have such companies in Sweden also and my experience is very good. We use them often on costumer cars.
yep. Even manufacturers are trying to wiggle out of any claims. I am dealing with Lexus Relax (10 years warranty) and the more I claim, the harder it gets.
Yeah right..... a 1.000 Pounds might (just...) pay the bill for an oilchange...
I'm no expert, but when getting an Aftermarket warranty ask them to send you a list of items NOT COVERED. if major components are on the list, do not buy it. Also, get the warranty with a reasonable deductible, like 500-1000$. These usually cover major items. Also, if u can buy it thru the dealership it will be less headaches when time to fix problems.
this repairs bill was 7000UKP. you suggest to "save" 500 or 1000. ok. who is paying remaining 6000/6500? :D
Uhgg and another one. I have not been driving my '18 stage 2 S4 nearly as hard. The paranoia is real lol. Probably won't make a difference anyway. I did use higher weight oil on my last change. So hot here in the summer, I'm more comfortable running something other than the 0w-20.
0-20 is ridiculous. Guarantee that's in there purely for fuel economy to get it into a tax bracket
@@matteightytwo Of course
There is a problem with the rocker arms, but only with the 1. version
Despite the fact that the 2. version also has small bearings, they don’t fail.
There are 3 Versions:
1. Version 06M109417H roller rocker -11.09.2017 (small bearings)
2. Version 06M109417L roller rocker arm - (small bearings)
11.09.2017- 06.08.2018
3. Version 0P2109417 roller rocker - 06.08.2018-now (big bearings)
99% of failures are model year 2017 or early 2018, because they have the 1.version
Mines an 11/17 build date but idk what the exact day is, I’m sure it’s the old rockers with my luck, I’m going to try and figure out exact build date but I’m not sure it’s possible. But I have an rs5 with the 2.9t not the 3.0t but I’m not sure it matters as far as rockers used.
Chances are pretty high, that your car has the 2. version of the rocker arms…They also have the small bearings, and look identical to the rocker arms who fail, but they’re improved. ( Because the last letter of the part-number called index has changed from H to L)
