I replaced the drive shaft on my 1989 S10 Blazer as the boot had been ripped for about a year. I had to split the ball joints and remove the shock absorber to get access. You were lucky with the centre axle nut. Mine took about 450 foot pounds to undo it. I was hanging off a 4 foot pipe and I bent my breaker bar.

Wow! What a job. Sure is more complicated than a Spitfire! Thanks, Elin.

The outer joint is called a “Rzeppa” joint, it was originally designed for a periscope drive in a submarine by a company in Czechoslovakia it was first used in cars by sir Alex Issigonis in the Mini🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

When lubing a joint use the joint in your favor, squeeze the grease down the center shaft hole. When you push the shaft in it will force the grease through all the bearings and shells.

Always good to see you at work, wonder why that shaft nut was loose? Never seen a vacuum operated drive before, thanks for showing us.
Poor old Rusty, he knows the snow is coming and wanted to play.
    Good luck from Spain!!

I used to grease the Rzeppa like a motorcycle chain, heat the grease until it’s liquid, drop the joint in & let it cool, scrape off the excess & done!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hmmm, I have a '97 F150 XLT 4wd, I wonder if I can look forward to the same pain you experienced? At least I don't have a 'Rusty' to distract me if I need to perform this maintenance! lol

What was the small circlip still on the bench for? Was that the clip on the differential end of the shaft?

Is it my eyes or do those wheels look small for the size of the wheel well?

Those angles on the CV boots look pretty extreme... no wonder they fail eventually...
