1963 Pontiac Catalina Sat For 23 Years! Will It Run?

  • We pulled this 1963 Pontiac Catalina coupe out of a field from where it sat for 23 years. The engine was stuck I attempted to make it run again. It has a 389 CI engine with a 2 barrel carb, Roto Hydromatic automatic transmission, and Saf-T-Trac rear end. Despite being a really neat looking car, it appears to be suitable as only a parts car. Nevertheless, it's great knowing that we have a running 389 laying around in case we need a donor. One of the most satisfying feelings is making an old engine run again. Feel free to contact me if you feel like you need to own this old gal! $1500 located in eastern Nebraska

    Make sure the battery cables are reversed. That's anti theft and if when they burn it down if you can't have it nobody can.

    I know it's rough, but I'd still like to see her get saved.

    Why would that be a parts car? It’s worth fixing

    • @ChiefClassics
      @ChiefClassics  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The poor thing doesn't have a straight body panel and the frame is rusted out. I'm not going to fix it, but if someone wanted to buy me out of it, I'd happily sell it

      Should tighten up the battery cables with a wrench so it would get better connection

    Them old pontiacs back in the60s was really fast but if you ok ver wound them they would come apart at the seams i know this because im 74 years old and had them in the 60s and been a mechanic for over 55 years i remember going with my friend when he picked up a new 1969 GTO judge .i used to ride to work in a 1963 pontiac grand prix

    My friends had a 63 blue 4 door i loved to drive as a teenager. It was stock but lowered on moon caps and white walls with dual exhaust. I loved to hear it crackle when i stepped on it. I later bought a 63 2 door white bonneville parked for years but it smoked like a chimney and i sold it back to the guy i got it from.

      I bet it looked slick after it was lowered! Stay tuned, I'll have a 63 Bonneville 4 door on here soon

    I can't believe that you're gooing to use it for parts. Yes it's a good parts car BUT THE WHOLE CAR IS GREAT!! This is a solid car that SHOULD be brought to at LEAST a Rat rod Status!!

    When I store my car for the winter I drain the gas and carb and pour a couple tablespoons of oil down each cylinder and bag the carb and tape a bag over the tailpipe. It's good for long-term storage also.

    Would love to see how she runs with a bit more work, but totally understood about not wanting to put anything else into her after seeing that (lack of) frame. At least you'll know you have a good engine on your hands. Would be neat to know if that alternator is still charging!

    • @ChiefClassics
      @ChiefClassics  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I might rebuild the carb and hook up a fuel system. The previous owner told me he has the keys so maybe I'll be able to test the alternator now!

    • @ChiefClassics
      @ChiefClassics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Anyone can if they want to throw enough money and a frame at it. I could restore it if I felt like it, but this car in particular isn't worth the effort. There's no point in making it drive when over 60 percent of the frame rails are missing between the wheels

    Two spark plugs in the trunk and no keys are a good sign? Why the hell are those "good signs"?
