In 1965, my brother found me a 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser 2 Dr. for use as transportation during my senior year of high school. Loved the car. When I left for the service after high school, my brother sold it. Later I had 5 Mercury's. I now have an 2018 Taurus, 2007 Mustang GT/CS and a 2006 Mustang GT. The 2006 will have a salvage title. I hit black ice back in Dec 2022. Finally got car back in Sept 23.

I learned a long time ago that if you have a good electrical system your engine will start and run 90% of the time. The first thing you should do is replace the points, rotor and condenser. The point gap is critical to good starting and running. Back when points were the norm, they were replaced about every 20K miles along with the rotor and condenser. Do not forget to put the proper lubricant on the distributor cam lobe otherwise the point gap will close as the fiber block wears down quickly. Your battery and it's cables and connections are just as critical. You need a good supply of 12V, loose connections and bad cables cause too much resistance. I saw an engine running with oleander branches being used as spark plug wires to make the point on having good connections and proper point gap and of course don't forget the spark plugs and their gaps. Routine maintenance and tune ups back in 1958 replaced the above items regularly as mentioned, about 20K, if you keep up with the maintenance your Mercury will be a very reliable vehicle. Your wife won't see another like it in the Wal Mart parking lot. I subscribed and gave you a thumbs up, thanks for taking the time to make the video!

I have a 57 Monarch with a 312 engine and it has a normal coil wire on it. My 57 has a power memory seat it goes forward when you turn on the key and back when when you turn it off first year of that feature, I installed a altinator and electronic ignition, it's a lot more reliable. I see you have a 57 rear bumper on yours. Your car has the automatic power seat that moves forward when you turn in key and back when you turn the ignition off. Mine has the same feature.

I have been working on lincolns and mercs since 58, you have a rare car , made to run high spped for long periods, with 430 linc engine , we had a new 58 wagon with 430 engine, bought new to pull 6000 lb trailer, i have a 57 merc 2dr sedan with 368 big yblock with dual qaudes and stick shift. .be very carefull of windshield it is cruiser only, you can fit 71 up 15 inch wheels off big gm cars, it is easyer to get 15 inch tires, the highway patrol 58 mercs have 15 inch wheels and used 15 injch 56 merc caps.. You did a pretty good job getting that old girl running young man! Brings back memories of myself back in 1966 when I was 18 years old. Just out of boot camp and bought a 59 Chevy Bel Air 2Dr Hardtop for $500.00. Getting ready to go to a new Posting out West a civilian mechanic wanted to trade me his 59 Turnpike Cruiser 2Dr Hardtop for my 59 Chevy. So I did that and drove it all the way across the continent in the winter of 66. That 383 Ford MEL ran fine but she sure loved the gas. The next year I traded it in for a 59 Cadillac with the 390 4 speed Hydramatic. It was the best of the three, but the Cruiser was the most unique car among them. God Bless you and your Family with great success in life, as well as with the Mercury TP Cruiser. RS, Maj Ret.

another thing i do is eliminate heat riser on pass side if its still there, and i use 2 inch pipe front to back with four straight through mufflers , this lets it breath and run cooler , that has a 9 inch rear end with probably 291 or 300 gear ratio, you cam put in a 356 gear with the 15 inch wheels and run the old time drags and still run on highway . radial tires will make it handle much better and get good traction , your car may have a posi unit in it beaing a cruiser.i have buddy with a 57 lincoln with factory posi, if you get sprk knock under load when warmed up , retard timimg a little , also that will have two thermostates one on esch side, you need to buy a service manual on that car, this helps. get hold of me if you need anthing. Glad to see that you appreciate this car. These are quite rare now. The success with fuel, spark and starter is a great start! The torque converter may have a leaking seal, but it is possible that after adding transmission oil and letting it cycle through gears some and allowed to warm up may begin to self-heal. Its certainly worth a try. Good luck!

that trans leak could be tube going into pan holding dip stick, trans cooler lines, front seal, that trans is the big case type with 5 bolts holding it to bell housing, it has stronger parts than standard auto trans, in fact that basic big case trans was used in Ford Thunderbilot drag cars in 64 with 425 hp 427s., if you get leak stopped and fluid in it and its slow about going into gear, the seals in clutch cans are hard and leaking till they get warm, i just built a 57 linc trans, and cutch seals were very hard and cracked, all else looked nice , looked up specs on your car, 0-60 6.9 top speed 129, super maurader was 133, i have a freind with a super, it is a montery 2 dr sedan, stick shift with big t85 3spd , what a monster. Bill Stroope built some poliice cars, with dh suspesion and 15 inch wheels , hot rod mag did story on the signal hill mercs, very fast cars, you are so lucky to find that cruiser the body reall looks solid. rick martin oxford ohio.

Older motorcycles used the coils where the wire screwed into it with a screw on boot

The Skid Steer shld Fire up !! Get some Better Battery Power.. Juice it up..use a Lubricated Starting Fluid only. Replace old Fuel.. Make sure you change Engine oil Again. When they have been previously locked up full of crud. They will be a pain at first. I wld assume the Glow plugs are no longer Working. Don't give up. When it starts and it will. Let it run for bout 3 to 5 mins. Try not to let it get to warm. Then shut it down and see how well it starts after that. It shld be a Better Beast. No worries mate it can and will happen.

Not an FE, which was either a 332 or 352 in 58. The 58 Mercury had the MEL (Mercury Edsel Lincoln) series, 383 or 430 cui.

@@edwardesty4951 You're wrong. It had no combustion chanbers in the head. Much like the 348-408 Chevy W engine. The bottom of the heads we're flat and milled at an angle, so the combustion chanbers was actually in the cylinder itself.

you might want to fill the trans to temporality test it and make sure there isn't any other things to fix inside the trans. fluid is only slightly cheaper(joke) than doing all that work.
