  • Here is a video lesson about developing Hi Hat splash pedal technique.
After performing a short solo demonstrating several types of splash patterns I explain the ways in which I teach this technique. For demonstration material I am using my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion. If you are interested in a copy you can purchase it from me at rickdior@gmail.com
The equipment I am using for this video consists of: Doc Sweeney Stave Drums in African Olive wood 20"x 16" Bass Drum Toms: 10"x 8", 12"x 8", 14"x 14 floor tom.
The Snare Drum is a GMS 13"x6.5" Bell Brass model.
The double pedals are Tama Iron Cobra.
Cymbals are: Sabian Jack DeJohnette 20" Ride Wuhan 20" Lion Cymbal Paiste Traditional 16" and 17" thin crashes Sabian HH 13" Regular Hi-Hats Sabian 12" AA Mini Hats .
Heads on toms are Remo Pinstripes on toms Bass drum is an Aquarian Power stroke 1 head. Snare is an Aquarian coated head. Microphones are a AKG C24 stereo overhead and an Shure Beta 52 on the Bass drum.

I absolutely love hearing and seeing you playing the hihat as it is so rarely used. Yet, just by existing, a hihat begs to be used like this. It frees up the right hand for all kinds of other rhythms and strokes !!

What a scrumptiously sassy splashing of the Hi-Hat! Nice and crispy, like a properly roasted chicken!

The way you describe the mechanics and reiterating how important relaxed technique is… I find so unbelievably helpful for me to comprehend and apply. And the there is an immediate difference in my stress, muscles, and most importantly my feel and time improve!
    Thanks so much for this!

Great tutorial, sir! Could you do a tutorial on getting into the salsa/rumba ostinatos with the left foot clave?
I have always found that extremely difficult .

If I tried to practice this for the next 10 years, I'd probably have enough learning left for another 10.
