- Here is a video demonstrating the Bass drum and Hi-Hat foot technique that I use.
I talk about the bass drum pedal I use (Tama Iron Cobra) as well as the beaters.
The cymbals are all 1950's K Zildjian with a Paiste 22" swish.The drums are Gretsch Centennial series: 18"x14" bass,10",12",14" toms and a 14"x7" snare.
There are calf heads on the snare drum.

This feels like an elixir, I don't know, some kind of food for the spirit, hearing the stories of practicing and feeling frustrated but continuing and self-reviewing and innovation. Exactly what I need right now, as a life-long wanna-be drummer and a now determined-to-be-dedicated beginner. I started out at 12 but never really gave it my all. That has changed. I'm hooked. dangggggggggg love this skill. I’ve taught myself how to play drums throughout the years by air drumming to paramore and heavy music LOL but i need to learn the basics. My church wants me to play drums for worship and it’s so intimidating! I play guitar and have been playing that efficiently for 10 years including classes so i’m scared to say the least haha

loved the video; very informative. It seems every time I watch one of your videos, many questions come to mind: 1. I remember Buddy Rich loved playing with a Rogers pedal that had a solid foot-board (ie. no separate heel) - any views/opinions? 2. Have you ever experimented with a double pedal/beater? And a request: after hearing you demo some Zeppelin drumming, would love to see you make a video about old school classic rock drumming. thnx

I use a double pedal on occasion. You can hear that in my Wiggle Room Video towards the end.
I have not really used many pedals with a solid foot board so I can't comment on that. I am comfortable with the Tama so that's what I use but there are many great pedals out there. One of my biggest requirements is that the pedal be very quiet which most are not. Any pedal noise interferes with my recordings so I am extremely picky about that. Sometimes you will but a pedal and it's quiet but in a year or so it starts getting noisy when the linkage system gets broken in. This has occurred with all the pedals I have used except for the Iron Cobra with the strap.

thanks and another nice video, curious about the weights of the beaters and if you prefer one weight over another and also how many inches the beater extends, from pedal attachment, also for the counterweight, how heavy is this,and is the purpose to simply add weight or affect the balance point/torque? thanks agaian for all of your excellent educational videos.

The beaters are different weights. For playing jazz I usually use a lighter beater. I like a heavy beater for playing Rock, Funk, etc.
As far as extension goes I extend the beater according to the size of the BD. I try to get it dead center on a 22 or 20 and just above center for an 18" BD.

Wow! You are amazing! This is fantastically helpful, even for a novice drummer such as myself. I have a question for you sir. I practice in a space that has a shared drum set. The kick pedal gets changed out by different folks that share the space/practice kit, and the pedals are really different from each other. Is there a particular kick pedal you recommend to be able to play your technique? Looking forward to working with your book!

Rick i own a vinage 67/69 set of george hayman vibrasonic drums , 14" floor tom was damaged , any advice how to match the gold sparkle finish?
If you were on a rock kit with a low tuned, low response batter head on the kick, would you then put a few more turns of spring tension to add for the lack of rebound from the loose head or would you still leave your spring as is? Thanks

I never change my pedal tension. I adjust technically to the type of music I am playing. I do use different beaters. For rock I use a wood or plastic beater.

Do you have a video that addresses vibraphone posture/stance? I find my feet get quite sore, and my neck and back are struggling to find the right position? Another thing I'm not sure of is if I should be bending my knees as much in order to span the entire keyboard, and what height is good for the instrument to be at? I do not have a video on that particular subject but maybe I will do one in the future.
Make sure you are not slouching your shoulders and bending your neck down to look at the keyboard.
If you have an older vibe with a small one point pedal (like the old Deagans) you can move the angle of the pedal with your foot on the fly so wherever you are on the vibe you can switch feet when one leg starts to hurt. You should not be bending your knees. As far as the height goes I like the instrument to be just below my navel.

Awesome video, do you have any trouble with balance with both feet suspended? It's for this reason that I play flat footed, but it seems your technique relocates a lot of the motions that the thigh might try to make to the ankle instead.. maybe this helps with the balance?
All of my weight is on my torso on the seat so that my feet can move freely. There is never any weight put on my feet. If you look at my Heath and Wellness part 3 video on the drum set I discuss this in detail.

Thanks for posting this video! After training with this bass drum technique for a few weeks, I found that my knee(may be one inch below it) doesn’t feel comfortable, especially I play faster. I try not to move my thigh up and down and play side to side.I really want to know what I have done wrong..(I am using this technique on some liner training which including bass drum double strokes)
Also, When I play double strokes, two strokes doesn’t sound even .How should I solve this? Thanks again!

Hello, Rick - Can you talk briefly at some point about your kick drum muffler on this video? Similar to the Chaffee muffler? Or, maybe a different company? Thanks, Rick. SOUNDED GREAT! One of the finest musical drum solos I've heard (and, I usually hate drum solos, as being just 'calisthenics', and busy show-boating.)
It is the Chafee muffler.
I have 2 of them, should have bought 10 of them before they were discontinued.
@@rickdior I'm thinking that you have the skills to create a similar muffler, and perhaps market it, as you also do with your hand-created sticks?
That period of feeling frustrated “for a while” seems like a common thread with drummers. It’s hard to say how long the period is, but it’s almost like the feet are a bit dumb, and it takes a whole lot of repetition before they get what you want to do. Rick, your feet seem very nimble, and someone starting would not yet have that muscle development and coordination. That unfortunately will come only after a lot of playing those pedals.
How far do you sit back on the throne? How high is the throne for you? does your hamstring rest on the chair or are you supporting your whole leg through your hip? I'm asking this because when I try to play heel up, I get a lot of tension in my hi...

Hi Rick! What hi hat pedal are you using?
I also got a quick question : I have a 60's Gretsch Floating Action bass drum pedal (my only pedal and I haven't seriously tried anything else) and it seems that I can't get the kind of loose and quick response you get with your Iron Cobra, so it looks close to impossible to get those side movement - multiple strokes that you're doing on the bass drum. Am I just too used to using flat foot (always trying to get the full tone like you mention in the beginning of the video) and have to practice that more, or is it the pedal that doesn't allow that and I should buy a more modern one to get it?

Some of the old pedals are stiff and will hamper progress. I would definately look into getting a modern pedal.
That being said its hard to tell whats going on unless I see how you are playing with your foot.

hey rick how do you get a nice chic when playing on the hats heel up?
I tilt the cymbal a bit with the tilt mechanism and just play. It should be stronger then with heel down because you can use the entire weight of your leg.

Those are groups of 5 quarter notes (quintuplets) in the space of 3 quarter notes (played by the Hi Hat) so 5 over 3. That's a polyrhythm.
