Devs, Studios, and Publishers much larger than I are already starting legal campaigns against Unity. I am a mear witness to mythical beasts battling on a grand scale. I am pretty much stuck with Unity when it comes to developing Noia. However the outcome will determine if I stick with Unity for future projects.

Additionally, I only just found your channel about an hour ago from the "1 Year of Game Development : Noia MMO" video. Seems to be an interesting journey so far, and entertaining to watch your progress. I'm not a game dev, but I could imagine a very tedious process of switching game engines and learning new libraries/frameworks. Hopefully, it doesn't come to that. I will stick to web development. haha. Anyway, good luck with your game and keep making these interesting videos!
do i understand correctly that the server uses ram for handling player info when a player is online? Would it not be possible to have a separate ram designated only to interactions with offline. from there you would probably be able to bulk-update data every now and then like you do when someone goes offline?

Maybe I am missing something but why are you so averse to making small reads/writes to the DB? Are you experiencing bottle necks already and a small increase such as properly keeping track of friends would break that? Seemed like you are trying to optimize a bit too far ahead. Even something like eventual consistency which wouldn't be instant is better than it just not working right at all. Is there proper messaging between players? That seems more complicated than the friend system and that's a staple of MMOs.
Yep there is proper messaging in place already. As of right now there are only 3 times the database is accessed. Server wide character save. Individual character save (when a character disconnects), and character load. I was always taught to never write to disk unless absolutely necessary. And I would much rather change loaded online player data that attempt to modify offline player data in the database.
Oh hey, it's that guy that makes an MMO all by himself. He's cool. Gee, must be really nice if his videos got boosted by the algorithm or something.

Yes, very possible. I already do something similar when writing logs to disk. I just don't want to at the moment XD
