Dev of the website here! This is super cool to see! And there's currently lots of games happening on the website, surely people coming from seeing the video - thanks to everyone who's trying it out!
Since this video was recorded a few days ago, we've made a bunch of improvements for things like clarity (showing you which squares are haunted), getting rid of the drawbacks that did not play out very well (like X-ray Vision), and we're still actively working on it. There's a lot of sharp edges but we're trying to take feedback and improve - thanks to everyone who tries it out and gives us their thoughts!
good improvements

@williekaufman4101
Super fun idea, best of lucks.
One thing which may not be currently in your hand is I just played 3 games and lost without me knowing it. when refreshing the page it said I lost due to running out of time, tho while the game was on it was opponents turn.
I think having a built-in feature to help streamers hide their drawback somehow would definitely help spread the game a lot more. At the moment I could see why a streamer would refrain from playing because of stream snipers.
Makes sense - I can add a button that hides your drawback. You still have to check it at the start of the game, though, so it's only a little more convenient, I think.@@gabrieljohnson6304
Is there any chance we will see more chess variants (or Fairy Chess) in the future? It's fun watching high level players play with different rules or more pieces, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of content of it on TH-cam. Pychess (which is a alternative fork of the website Lichess) has a bunch of fairy chess varients, and I think it would be fun to watch a game of Capablanca Chess (with Gothic alternate start, because it's a more balanced position and you will get more creative openings; otherwise White will be playing D3 or D4 at the start because the Archbishop has such a powerful diagonal targeting the rook in the corner).
The moment you noticed the True Gentleman drawback was hilarious 😂
You know what would make an interesting idea for chess? A lock feature, where every round, a piece is locked and its random. So move 1 (you and your opponent) bishop is locked (no big deal, can't move bishops anyway move one. Then it's randomized again, pawn locked (uh oh) move two. Then move three maybe it will say knights locked, so nobody can move a knight. Then move four maybe the bishop is locked and so on and so forth.
That sounds really cool tbh (maybe for the idea in which someone said a queue for one drawback for both of them)
The last one is interesting. If the opponent figures it out, they are invincible by shuffling the king back and forth between haunted squares.
They don't even have to shuffle it. Their king can just stay in a haunted square.
@@mingyue_chen well, in the end there would be zugzwang, so at least one piece must shuffle, or am I wrong? It dosent have to be the king though.
@@magnusthorup3916 In the end, yes, I totally agree. But I was thinking with that knowledge they should have won long before that if they just leave their king in a haunted square and attack ruthlessly.
Super cool game, I dont even think some of the more busted drawbacks are necessarily bad, they just need to be placed in to tiers so both players have similar levels of drawbacks. If there was enough of a playerbase, you could even queue in to which tier of drawback you want.
Horse tranquilizer was such a free win. XD
Chess Simp: The Home Game (tm) 😂
I was watching Nicklas' stream when you beat him, and he was just saying how you know everything.
Not knowing what drawback Eric got, makes it even more satisfying to watch... ❤🎉😂
6:13 hee hee hee
Eric might be the cutest content creator I know....
game 1 drawback:
black must lose
game 2:
your opponent won by cheating
ERIC!!!!!! let’s go!!!!!!
10:40 if your opponent took your rook you cant move your king and ur in check!
super cool, more of this, please
opinion on stalemate in timed chess? ive drawn alot of games recently.. iam +6 up , but they are looking for stale mate,,,only 700 elo as well..
Would be nice if we watching the video could actually see the drawback though
I see you like variants, have you given 5d chess a try? Although the hype around it has died down, I still think it's a really interesting variant.
So basically someone who watches a lot of Chess Simp decided to make a website
Pioneer is absolutely immobilising...
Oponent can't play Bishop e5 cause they already occupy that rank! 😂😂😂
the ai has gone too far
Bruh what is that profile pic
First😊
Gotta say, i like the idea, but some of those drawbacks are just absolutely unbeatable. I thought the x-ray thing would have given you atleast one turn to react to it but it was just insta loss, which makes it basically auto-loss at that point.
Dev of the website here! Ya, you're totally right, X-ray vision is way too savage - it's been removed. It's hard to make really difficult ones that don't feel stifling, but X-ray Vision wasn't tough-but-interesting, it was just kinda stupid. Plus we already have three-check as a drawback, which is a similar but less stupid version. There's been a bunch of improvements in the last few days since this video was recorded and we're still actively working on it so feedback like this is super helpful!
@@williekaufman4101 Hey good to hear! One good addition would be to just put opponents drawback without the close popup, or at least possibility to open it. Too many times have i automatically closed it and then realized i didn't even read what they had.
Ah yup, this is clearly a good idea - will add. Unfortunately, updating stuff like this requires taking the website down for ~30s, and I don't wanna mess up the games people are currently playing, so I'll probably try to find a good time for it tonight or something. In the meantime, you can refresh the page, although I realize that's not a great solution. Thanks!@@oscarilkka4969
I definitely was thinking x-ray vision was too strong, but honestly could still be interesting if you just had to move the king instead of just losing immediately. That's how I interpreted it originally and was surprised when he lost as soon as he was in "x-ray check"@@williekaufman4101
@@williekaufman4101i mean you could make it what I thought it was at first "if you're king could get captured by a piece on an otherwise empty board you lose" that might be interesting but tough
This gives major ChessSimp energy, though it's a very different game when your opponent is not 100 rated!
Well, I'm not a coward.
The dev was inspired by him! :)
The first two games were pretty much impossible for you to win, especially x-ray vision. I mean come on, that situation comes up nearly every game in chess.
A monkey would beat Magnus Carlson 90% of the time if he had that drawback
The weirdest thing was that that ruleset was rated 1100 while having to move your long when checked was 1400 even though with this ruleset you literally loose when in check and it's even way stronger than just that
Could maybe be a fun ruleset if it only counted as a check: ie you must move your king out of the x-ray on your turn, otherwise you lose. This would still be a major handicap. Maybe add in that your opponents piece can only x-ray through 1 piece. as an easier version
@@futurefox128was thinking this myself. A lighter version, like you said only being able to x-ray through one pawn/piece for the win would be much more balanced
Pioneer is also just completely impossible to play
100 rated chess, but your opponent is unpaid
I was thinking this was a lot like chess simp's videos
Very aggresive.
So true 🤣🤣🤣
In my first game my drawback was "Modest: You lose if you have more pieces than your opponent." The opponent's drawback was "Boastful: You lose if you have fewer pieces than your opponent." Finding that out at the end of the game felt a little bit unfair...
Should that be allowed to happen if it makes both players lose for getting a normal outcome?
so who won?
Wait. So if you make the first capture, you both lose?
They could have kept the tension until king taking...
A real paradox
No moves to a rank you occupy? That is a BRUTAL drawback!
The second was an easy mate in two, regardless of what you played.
I played a couple games after watching this video, that buzz noise happens when your opponent tries to make an illegal move. Makes it easier to figure out your opponents drawback.
So glad Chess Simp got his own website.
This blunders the woman.
i wonder if he was the inspiration
Lmao
I LOVE Eric's face expression when he learned the opponent's drawback 4:03 like "you're calling THAT a drawback?"
Ha, just tried this and lost a game in a few moves - my drawback was if any opponent's pawn gets past to my side of the board I lose. Good grief.
10:38 would he have lost if opponent played Rxg1? Since the drawback is only king moves while in check.
not on the spot, since the opponent couldn't perform the king-capture yet, due to not having three knights.
@@ArticulateDuck ah right good point
Why cant u just take back with the other rook? I feel like im missing something here
@@lelibruk3910re read the last sentence of the comment
But who plays like that?
Xray vision could be split in two drawbacks (can be checked through pieces, check = loss) and both halves would be insanely hard.
Check loss is impossible.
It’s interesting to guess along both players’ drawbacks. So, nice format indeed.
However, some drawbacks are unbalanced. Author might consider matching the handicaps better.
Feedback: zen mode toggle to allow your opponent to see the drawback
Regardless of stream sniping, it's beyond stupid to have drawbacks that allow one side to win in a few moves with no possible response from the other side. Drawbacks like the first 2 Eric got should just be changed.
Isn't Bb5 at 1:21 mate for white?
Edit: nice, he noticed it later (2:06).
Its basically chess but luck based you dont need skill when your opponent is unlucky 😂
@williekaufman4101 To the Dev of the website and also Eric Rosen.. I have an idea.. One of the drawbacks could be, can't move to or capture anything on the center squares e4 e5 d4 d5... If opponent forces you to move to a center square (say, by a check) you loose.
This could even be a double drawback where neither player can use the center squares.
Eric, you could also do this as a video not related to Drawback Chess. Your opponent has no way of knowing why you are not taking control of the center and not making captures there. This would show the importance of controlling the center with an extreme case where you can't do that at all. Idea?
Gave it a try but only got matched against the same guy 4 times in a row. Wouldn't be a problem except I put in my actual rating of 1900 and he clearly joined as a beginner even though he's probably about my level. I get drawbacks that can instalose me the game based on things I have limited control over, or prevent me from making necessary moves to avoid checkmate, he gets drawbacks like "you can't move your rooks until they're connected" which is basically standard anyway lmao. Kind of takes the fun out of the game if you lie about your rating.
It would also be cool if it was possible for both players to have the same drawback, maybe in particular if the game is with a friend.
Imagine Boastful vs Boastful
(Boastful : you lose if you have less pieces than your opponent)
Basically 1 capture = immediate win
10:36 if he takes your rook to “trade”, it is checkmate 😅
I was thinking the exact same thing, except the opponent wouldnt be able to take the king because of their own drawback lmao
@@meneermankepoot Imagine Eric, feeling defeated, move his king toward his death
Then puzzled, he sees that his oponent, having forked a king and a rook, decides to take the rook
Am I being dumb? Aside from opponents drawback, cant just the rook trade and we chilling?
@@lelibruk3910 we cannot take back the rook, because of Eric’s drawback: when in check, he must move his king
No because opponent didn't have 3 knights...
Please keep creating Drawback Chess content. I love the game myself and it's very fun to watch.
I’m out, probably ‘cause I’m an old curmudgeon. Or maybe because classic chess is already a beautiful game.
would be more fun if both players got the same drawback imo. Some of these are waaaaaaay worse lmao.
I think this is pretty funny. More of this pls
If GothamChess tries this site he won't be able to post it to TH-cam because of all the swearing.
What an awesome game, I just won despite having to move to square b1 on move 13 (as black) and I've never felt so alive
If you wanna know hidden drawback at 6:32...
While in check, you must move your king
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at 10:36, wouldn't Eric have lost if Rxg8?
No because his opponent needed three knights. Would have been very confusing without knowing the drawbacks beforehand lol
Still can't understand why cant the second rook just trade
Cuz "the king can only move when its in check" and "only the king can move while its in check" are 2 things
It seems the AI doesn't actually understand that it has a drawback and will still go for tactics that don't work with it. The AI deciding to trap your queen when it couldn't even take was a horrible idea
the drawbacks are not even remotely balanced lol
Some of the drawbacks need to have either better wording or safeguards to them. I got an automatic loss because I had to move a piece onto a specific square on the board (which just so happened to be the one my opponent castled on to) on exactly move 14.
Yeah. This has some potential but this state it's just dumb. So unbalanced it's not even close to being fair every game. Bit disappointed
Its kinda hilarious how Eric says that his drawback didn't affect his game and right at that moment (10:38) his opponent has rook x g1 ending the game with a loss for Eric :-)))) And the move is not even that impossible at some levels :-) Which of course was prevented by the opponents drawback but that was to be found out only after the game :-)
PS: it was not impossible, but it would be funny to lose a rook and then Eric would have to move his kind on a square where it can be captured(d1?), but opponent would instead capture the other rook and Eric would then move the king once again :-) And then even if the opponent was able to somehow exchange Eric's queen he would still need to promote 3 knights and checkmate with them to win :-)))))
My first game on this site my drawback was: "Glorious Battle: For four consecutive moves, starting on move 16, you must capture" whereas my opponents was "Checkers: You must capture if able." Also strange that lower drawback elo means it is harder not easier?
Can't lie, the concept is great, but the drawbacks are terrible. Five games, none of them were playable at all. Can't move a piece that's behind a pawn. Cool, only pawn pushing until you get either blocked in completely or just checkmated because literally nothing can block or capture, including the king. One was complete grammatical gibberish and I still don't understand what it was supposed to be doing, all I know is that suddenly a message popped up telling me I lost to it.
So, yeah. Again, cool concept, but I didn't get a single game I'd consider enjoyable.
Seems fun, but some of the drawbacks are way too severe. Like, there's literally nothing you can do to prevent the X-ray one! In comparison, having to move your king when you are in check is nothing. Not only would you immediately lose whenever you are in check with the X-ray rule, there's plenty of normal openings that would accidentally trigger the X-ray rule.
Would be cool if you could add the drawback as timeline, in the description or as edited text in the video for the TH-cam people. I don't wanna skip forward and spoil myself just to see the drawback :( I think it's much more interesting as a viewer if I know the drawback while you make decisions.
10:37 If black captured your rook, its a check, so you cant take back and must move your king to either b1 or d1.
But, because of your opponent's drawback, they cant take your king and would take your rook on h1 instead.
Then its another check, so you have to move your king again
Assuming opponent rook doesnt leave the 1st rank, you must move your king until you escape the 1st rank via e2 or threaten the white rook at g1, g2, h1, etc.
This video made me curious so i played a game myself. Ended up forgetting about my drawback and blundered a draw because my pawns could only move to light squares, meaning they couldn't promote ;u;
It was funny at least
Losing a chess game due to a completely random dice roll. Just wjat everyone wants, forced losses.
Then again, this is the only way I'd beat Eric. So...
I like it. Although I think your first two drawbacks were way too severe to give you any reasonable chance to win. It's too bad your non-AI opponents were watching and knew your drawbacks. But that's no fault of the game. Would love to see you try it again.
Yeah this variant sucks, without at least knowing the opponents drawback there's no point. Many of the drawbacks you get will force you into terrible positions while you don't even know if your opponent has a weakness that matters at all. Even if they also get a bad one you have no idea of knowing in which way it is bad, so it'll just end up being down to luck which one of you gets screwed over by their drawback first.
I think something great about chess (but not most other games) is you can understand your opponent's weaknesses and take advantage of them. It seems like they should tell you the opponent's drawbacks so you can plan, but it's probably more interesting that they don't!
AI forced u to capture its rook when it damn well knew it couldn’t take your queen. Something tells me it is programmed to play the best move and isn’t concerned with the follow up moves. Once it gets to the follow up moves it tries to play them, when it can’t it plays next beat until it can move
This is kind of fun but ridiculous. You may as well flip a coin. You just can not overcome some of the draconian drawbacks. If they were more mild drawbacks it would be better.
I like the choices for skill level. "I am Magnus" will probably get hits from thousands of people, none of whom are telling the truth.
Picking expert instead of Magnus Carlsen despite being in the top 0.1% of chess players lol. I think you missed the point of the self assessment
1:24 couldn’t the opponent take on c5, and if Eric took back with his pawn then queen takes queen wins the game because the king can’t take back (because that would be moving on a rank with other pieces)
Thanks for the great content, my wife finds your voice very soothing and plays your audio while falling asleep after a hectic day.
I just played 37 drawback games and reached a rating of 1803. Quite fun!
The AI may have had strong chess knowledge but lost due to its lack of strategy in regards to the drawbacks.
The AI had like 10 opportunities to take your queen before you exploited the disadvantage lmao
7:18 If your opponent captures your knight you can’t take back. so I think Bishop d2 makes more sense.
i would pay to see super GMs try this mode
I love how he pretty much lost the first game in 1 move. If the opponent knew, bishop g5 was instant mate
Come on. You really think that your opponents are watching you stream? That is really annoying.
"I can't move on to a rank I arleady occupy"
Occupies the 6th rank on the first move
this is madness, love it
This game is stupid.
Wow, the second one was so brutal, I thought it had to be the opponent's turn for it to count. This one just isn't fair.
The x-ray should be "when you end your turn", cause that's just not fair otherwise
Wait, in the first game couldn't white win with Bb5+ on move 3?
You should edit in the drawbacks now for us youtube viewers :D
To the Dev of the website and also Eric Rosen.. I have an idea.. One of the drawbacks could be, can't move to or capture anything on the center squares e4 e5 d4 d5... You can say check through the center like normal, but you can't Move through the center squares. If opponent forces you to move to a center square (say by a check) you loose. Eric, you could also do this as a video not related to Drawback Chess. First game opponent doesn't know about it. Second game of the match neither player can use the center squares. This would show the importance of controlling the center with an extreme case where you can't do that at all. Idea?
Wondering if @Eric or the Dev of the website saw my comment. (can't use the center squares)
you should've edited in the drawback so the youtube viewers could know them
10:35 if black would’ve captured rook that would’ve been game
There's a reason chess has lasted thousands of years. All these variants are just silly.
That second game ended in a weird, somewhat paradoxical way.
Most exciting development in chess since Em passant.
If opponent knows that I'm true gentleman than he will start capturing each and every piece by queen and king will be the last standing to captured 😅😂
Reading your comment made me realise you can use the queen to essentially block m1 even, imagine putting the queen between the opponents rook and queen looking directly into the kings eye 😂 that sounds really fun
More of this pls!
Literally Chess Simp simulator 2024.
now i cannot stop playing that... and i need to work :)
Awesome game. Has potential and would love to see more.
This was a lot of fun. Its not duck chess, which I think is the most interesting variant you've spotlighted on this channel, but it's still pretty cool.
5:34 you could have played Ke2 🥚
Qe7#
I tho you kinda had to play Ke2 and Be2 to give the king some space, but it doesn't even give white the chance to move which seems...wrong as in other drawbacks u can move with king in check...
