- In this Beginner to Master Speedrun Series, I try to climb the rating ladder while providing lots of lessons about chess along the way. In this episode, I play 3 instructive chess games, all of which feature early moments in the opening where I punish beginner blunders.

Please don’t stop this series. Its the my favourite and most informative content to date.
Agreed
Ikr, I've been like white on game 3, and i couldn't understand how he can checkmate me when i have so many pieces left!
my opponent did not appreciate being an all u can eat buffet 😆🔥
The ambulance siren was way too well timed!!
That was levy on his way to help
plus he had a queen sac and mate
Ikr lmao
One thing I've noticed through this speedrun that I don't know if you've mentioned is how many of these opponents use so much less time than you. Particularly the second opponent here blitzed out like 20 moves with over 8.5 minutes on the clock.
It's very common for lower elo players to do that. They tend to blitz out the first move that comes to mind. It can be in part because they don't have good time management skills development and also because they don't recognize when they have a critical position and should take more time to consider the variations.
Also Eric is doing a fairly thorough analysis of the game while he plays so that uses up quite a bit of time.
If you don’t know what you’re doing, why waste time?
@@alexandershorse9021 It's only wasting time if you'll lose on time as a result. New players would benefit from slowing down and just taking stock of a position. What does my opponent want to do? Are there any tactics? You might think it is a lot to ask of low rated players, but when blundering pieces is rampant in this elo range the time is well spent to stop and ask "What did my opponent threaten with their last move?"
@@chrisosborne4731 totally agree, if you look at Eric or or Aman or John B, they take the time, even at this level.
I used to be really into chess, but I stopped playing for a while due to life commitments. When I tried to get back into it recently, I felt a bit out of practice. I explored various learning platforms to help me get back on track, but it was your series that truly reignited my passion for the game. Your detailed explanations and thoughtful approach have been incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for reigniting my interest in chess.
Incredibly....I agree.
The sound of the siren timed before the checkmate made me giggle too hard it nearly woke somebody up 😂
“My opponent doesn’t appreciate being an all you can eat buffet” 🤣
These should be 2 hours long 😢
The more I've watched this series, the more it's made me realize how often I lose awareness of significant components, such as missing significant tactical signals and tendency to go for overly-aggressive moves that actually weaken my pieces ability to work together. I'm inspired to work on my Italian, and King's Pawn opening, to look for natural opportunities to punish weak counter-play in low-rated lobbies as you have shown. Those minor pieces sure can contribute a lot to the battle, when orchestrated well together! :)
P.S. I'm kind of glad that several of your 700 lobbies, were not near as obvious how to win. It seems there really is much awareness we need to have, in order to consistently convert those levels of games into wins.
This is reaching the point where it is super practical knowledge for me at my level. I have genuinely employed ideas you have explained in games.
I have learned more about chess in this series than any chess content on the internet. Please do not stop doing this
You have such a knack for explaining ideas to beginners, great stuff
I lose track of which episodes I've watched from night to night after working a full day and eating and taking some chill Chess lesson time. I could watch the same lesson from you 5 times in a row and not quite figure it out. Every chess video I watch I learn something, sometimes the same lessons in a row, but I love it. I no longer need to be good, I just need to be improving every day... even if some days I slide back in exchange for some hard days.
I've been gaining Elo thanks to this series! The tips have been very helpful.
I really respect the way you play in the speed run, you are actually coaching your opponent how to improve their play. Bravo. Thanks for sharing.
Loving this series, I love how you go in depth about so many choices, I am learning a lot and recently went from 850 to 1100, I think a lot thanks to these videos! Don't change a thing, looking forward to the next one!!
Thank you for allways entertaining us in this calm way Eric! ❤
21:05 "it's an all-you-can-eat buffet!" 😂😂😂 Classic Rosen
Please never stop making these
This is how I’ve become better at chess you’re the best teacher!!!!
Keep it up please !
Thanks for doing this series with a 10min time control. It really gives the space to comment on the ideas and thoughts for positions. Amazing work!!
This is my favorite series so far on the whole TH-cam ❤️
I’m loving these videos. Thanks so much. I’m learning a lot
Always helpful material and a good reminder for me about patience, thank you.
These videos keep me going Eric. Thank you my brotha!
13:48 the more aesthetic mate in 3 is Qe8+ Qxe8 Rxe8+ Kd7 R1e7#
Why not Re8? Isn't that the quickest mate even quicker than Qa5?
Awesome series; thank you, sir!
I've learn so much with this series, thank you !
I love this series! Please don’t stop!
You're a bad, bad man...and I'm here for it.
My favorite series as well!! I'm learning so much and I can't wait until you get to closer to 1000 Elo
Thank you for the instructive games
Thanks Eric for posting this video just before I'm off to bed. Great way to finish a very busy and intense day.
Love these videos and also love the profile pictures
So instructiv!
Thanks Eric!
Greetings from Germany
This series are the best! Ty
You: wracking your brains trying to increase your dropping elo to 850.
Reality: There's a Chess Grandmaster on the other end.
that last game..."Oh no my bishop" was brilliant!
'my opponent does not appriciate being an all you can eat buffet' 🤣😂 that had me laughing out loud 21:21
Restarting chess after 30 years. This video series is GREAT.
Tried a few more practice games... and now going to rematch the previous videos.
Thank you, sir.
Am constantly waiting for a new episode in this series, thanks Eric!
By the way - based on similar siries in other genres, especially in video games, the series should be called "Unranked to GM" or U2GM.
Speedrun is more commonly used for doing something as fast as possible..
Changing the profile pictures is so wholesome
I love the picture update! My son is 4 and my daughter is 5 and they are both playing in their first tournament this summer.. luckily they are better than me so I’m trying to learn through this series to compete with them better
You're very concise with simplifying the principles of chess
I like these videos. after 10 seconds I upvoted this one :)
Thx Eric - looking forward to future games vs stronger players!
I love this series. And the content. ‘There’s an all you can eat buffet on the queenside’ ! 😂
The ambulance at 14:05 was just brilliant
Eric, I get the impression that you're a wonderful human being in real life and a relentless taskmaster over the chessboard.
Great series!
There is one opening I know of where white plays an early f3, the fantasy Caro-Kann. But even there it's 3. f3 instead of 2. f3, and I wouldn't call the fantasy a mainstream opening.
I think Danya recommends it in his speedruns, so maybe kinda mainstream?
@@starry7544 Danya does recommend it. It's a very practical choice because it makes a lot of caro players very uncomfortable and it's very easy for black to go wrong and get wrecked if they don't know theory.
Is that enough to make it mainstream? Idk
Best series!! We want moreeeee
I was hoping to find this video right now!
Such a great series
Love the Shark music! Thanks again, I hope you will take this to 2200 or 2300. Learning so much.
Oh! How I wish Eric Rosen would CRUSH my hopes and dreams!!!
Such great content, cannot be understated. If you run out of content, just start repeating it cause reinforcement helps too! You make it look easy
There’re actually a few good opening where you play f3/f6 quite early. Not as early as move 2 of course. I’ll put down a few if people want to try them out.
Blackmar Diemer gambit,
Von Popiel gambit,
Fantasy Caro Kann,
Budapest gambit (the f6 line can be played instead of main line Bb4+),
Nimzo-Larsen attack (black can plays f6 if he put 2 pawns in the center),
Owen defense/English defense,
Pirc defense (white plays f3 in the main line)
I probably forgot a few too so someone else can fill it out. I left out stuff like Englund gambit sideline on purpose since those aren’t really a good opening.
I love the fantasy Caro Kann! The queen sac trap is hilarious if it goes off and even if it doesn't it always goes into a dynamic position!
@user-ti4di1uh2d he meant that advice for novice players who are just learning the basics. Later on, when they've learned the general principles well, they can judge when it's o.k. to break them.
I've only been playing chess for 3 days and after a day stuck at 400 in Bullet, I'm now 700 in Blitz and owe it all to this video series; thanks so much, Mr. Rosen!
Just won my first "Oh no my queen" Stafford line. Thanks, Eric!
that last one was brutal
Amazing content!
You are the best, keep the good content going.
It's great to see the needs of more beginner-level players taken seriously. Although I'd say I'm intermediate standard, the vids are still interesting and educational. I suppose 1.d4 g6; 2.f3 with the idea of 3.e4 isn't so bad.
loved the ohnomybishop, had a laugh
Thanks!
Curious to see how the vids will change as the games get more competitive.
Spoiler alert: Eric will continue winning.
Best series yet. More episodes faster so I can binge. Better than NETFLIX! :P
Omg, the perfectly timed ambulance in the background…
eric you wished me luck on my job interview and im happy to say i got the job :)
I love this series. Has become my favorite Rosen content because I am low rated and need these basic lessons. However...this is not a "speed" run. More of a Tortise Crawl. Still love ya, Eric....just when it's good....I want more.
No mercy in last game 🔥
All you can eat pawns😂 Love it!
14:05 XDD perfect timing
I want more "do I want icecream or cake"-moments in my chess games
Wait till you face the 900’s, then you’ll be in trouble…
in trouble of not winning in 10 moves but then in 12
Anything under 1200 is a quick, easy win.
@@allanshpeley4284 if he plays very aggressive, till 1700 is quick easy win, but since he is going to play more instructive chess that’s about right
Always smiling- a lovely man :)
We need this video more plz
"Someone called an ambulance for my opponent." 🤣
First opponent called the ambulance 😂
14:00 someone called ambulance for the opponent 😂
The Jaws music scared my kitten, you monster.
Can you please do the Danish triple Gambit in the Speedrun, I would love it🙂
Nice nice!
Thank Eric!Hope to cross 2600 bullet at last now 🙃
Crool finish
Eric looks like he's having a little too much fun owning these noobs 😂
Baby erics grow so fast feeding from free material!
lovely 8-year old photo!!
++oh no my bishop ^_^
Love this speed run! So informative! Can you please play d4 a bit more? :)
He'll play that at a bit higher level.
@@spartanthe300ththermopylae4 What do you mean? e4 is played more at the higher level. lol
@@nicholasbunioe4 is played way commonly in lower levels he doesnt want to go overkill against lower rated opponents I think he plays d4 normally as well
I hope he doesn't switch to the London when he gets up to 1600-1700 because I refuse to play that opening.
Finegold very concerned during that last game
Oh no, my baby Rosen!
To accuse Hikaru of cheating is just insane, he literally streams all of his online games in real time and even shows his thought processes during the games.
i lost it at 'all you can eat buffet' XD
I’ve encountered Nb4 in the fried liver so I want to know the best way to counter that since it’s both defending the Knight on d4 and threatening Nxc2+ and picking up the Rook. How do I keep the pressure on my opponent. Thanks!
A stream for tactics were awesome if possible !
Well that's basically this series. Eric's demonstrating a ton of different tactical ideas as he plays.
f3 is a good move on move 3 in the Fantasy Caro 😀
The ambulance 😂
The ambulance 😆
28:05 oh no my knight tactic/ bait
3rd game reminds me of a time when I fool's mated my opponent in my 2nd tournament.
In game 2, after 7... Bxc3, I am looking at 8. Qxg7. Black would have to play either Rc8 or Ke7 to defend the rook. If 8... Ke2, then 9. Bg5 wins the queen. If 8... Rc8, then the bishop could be taken on c3 with Black's position seriously eroded. Grabbing the g pawn does open up the file for Black, but it doesn't seem like he would have much of a chance to use that, as he has no support for the rook, and his king has become very vulnerable. The move also makes dealing with a subsequent d5 by Black a snap, as it no longer exposes the queen to attack. As it turned out, he allowed White to make the same Qxg7 a move later, but castling would have prevented that.
12:32 I think it could have been checkmate in 2: rook from E5 to E7 and then bishop to F4 (or queen to E5)
