Vote here for Hikaru to do a Streamer and GM duck chess tournament where a GM plays regular chess against another GM but the catch is there will be a streamer on each of the GMS team that moves the duck every turn for the GM.
Even better, I wanna see a hand, brain, duck tournament. One player chooses the chess piece, the second makes a move with it, and the third moves the duck
Duckprotip: The duck has 4 basic functions. 1. To block the opponent from making a move 2. To block a space for you to use for next turn 3. To block a space for the opponent to put the duck in his next move 4. To cut off a piece from protecting/attacking along it's line/diagonal
@@Frank7489 That is how I use the duck as well. King safety is not so important since you can block with the duck. But people focus way too much on the duck and forget that it is way more significant to coordinate your pieces properly. Triangles for example are extremely strong in duck chess, since the duck can only block one diagonal per move. 🙂
Really funny how many people saw the fork at 12:25 and hikaru totally missed it. He’s talked a lot about how he was naturally bad at chess and had to learn everything… and that’s really adding up here 😂 it really is incredible how good he’s gotten

1:12 I am questioning if a duck pro would exchange his knight against a bishop on move 3, but I am only rated 1980 in duck chess and therefore maybe missing the deepness of this quacktic. 😂 2:19 h6 and duck h3 and the knight is trapped. 😎 7:07 Duck g2 and the bishop is trapped. It is amazing how duck chess seems to annihilate any pattern recognition a Super GM normally has. 😂 12:25 Nh3 and blocking the rook with the duck wins a queen. 13:00 You undo a move by clicking the refresh symbol next to the duck below the board. 17:17 That is how you play duck chess like a pro. 🤗 18:48 I know that Hikaru has his own technical terminology (juicer, pony, horse, tower etc.), but calling the duck a knight is heresy and against all principles and the values duck chess stands for. 🤣 22:25 Knights > Bishops. True for duck chess. Rock solid advice. 🙂 25:02 In a situation like this you can defend your piece by placing the duck on b7, because your opponent has to move the duck on his next move the diagonal is free again. The way Hikaru played it makes it possible for the queen to take the knight and block on b7. I hope to see more duck chess on this channel. But before Hikaru faces Eric Rosen aka the final Boss of duck chess, he should play against Andrea Botez or Anna Cramling to refine his technique.
Also at 12:31, he could have played Nh3+ and duck anywhere on H file to block the white rook. Next move he'd win the queen unless I'm missing something.
I'm quite wondering how the endgames will be like in Duck Chess. Will an extra rook/ two extra bishops/ an extra knight and a bishop /queen vs. rook still be winning endgames?
Hahahahaha this is great content, how can you be so good at chess, but so terrible at duck chess, ahhh laughing so good rn :D Love ya Hikaru, bringing my spirits up!
Pieces that are only defended once from a non-adjacent square except by a knight are not defended at all, since the player can capture and block the defending piece. Knights and pawns become much more valuable than their counterparts in standard chess.
pawns arent really any more valuable but you are right about the knight, i just use queen around my king as defense and i would trade it for an opponents offensive knight in a heartbeat if i could get some pawns or something aswell
I like this, because the duck can easily block a certain tactic, therefore encourageing the players to think about the game as a whole, focusing on creating many lines of attacks and tactics In short: duck can prevent the move you want to make, so you must have multiple moves in parallel
You can capture a piece that is defend it and then place the duck so that your opponent can’t recapture your peace back. I think there’s a few times especially towards the end there where you could’ve done that. I think you could’ve forked the king and the queen with your night and block his Brooke from recapturing your knight
It doesnt work because in duck chess you need to capture the opponent King, not checkmate So hikaru could just block the attack with the duck ( maybe its still a good move but not a checkmate )
@25:40 could Hikaru have moved pawn to f7 and moved duck out of the way to force him to take queen and then rook would allow him to take rook or something? Seemed like he could’ve brought it back, right?
First, it’s not as difficult a concept as Hikaru makes it sound. This may be only his second batch of playing. The duck is a wall to block attacks where you need it, or can be placed where you don’t want it next turn. Knights can not be blocked from making a capture, but can be blocked from escaping as demonstrated a couple time here, as well as being missed I believe. There is no stalemate, a King can walk into check if desired. The King is captured for a win. I believe that’s all the rules. Key strategy is find a discovered check double check and blocking escape or a key square your opponent requires to block it. This can often pay off. Little is guaranteed. Suggest you watch Eric Rosen’s first go at it and compare it to Hikaru. Next watch Eric’s other clips on this variant.
